Swimming with humpback whales on Tonga

Monday 2nd of October 2017 and my alarm went off at 5 o'clock and I went out of bed without any SNOOZING. Shower, well, my room have no shower and no light in the bathroom. And no possibilities to make even tea in the room. So I was drinking water and Whale swim on Vava'uwatching bird pictures until 6 when I went for breakfast

The breakfast, well, toast and fruit, not what I had expected when breakfast was included. The van arrived a little late as the girl had got a flat tyre on the way to pick us up.

It was a lovely lady driving the car and I booed her car for tonight so I can go have dinner in the town when we're back from the humpback whale swim.

We are not lucky with the whales. We see a whale with a baby but the whale is “ON THE WAY” and they are soon gone. We are looking for a whale with a baby that are stationary so we can swim with them. We cruise around looking for whales until 11 thirty when we stop for lunch.

We take the opportunity to swim around as we are waiting for our turn to swim with a whale and a baby in the next bay. But there are 3 other boats in line in front of us so it took us two and a half hour before we could move over.

And it was quite late before we could get in to the water with the whales. My first swim and I spotted a mommy whale with a baby feeding while they came up to the surface.

It was a great swim and it was beautiful to see the whales coming up to the surface. As soon as the whale was gone we had to get up in the boat to let the next boat have a swim.
It works like this:

• A whale is spotted

• A boat is dropping the swimmers

• When the whale is diving again the swimmers return to the boat

• Next boat in the queue is going in to position, dropping their swimmers.

• And they swim until the whale dives or swim away (You can never keep up with a swimming whale)

Back in the boat and we were waiting for our turn again. The boat before us was very lucky, the whales was enjoying themselves at the surface laying still so they got a very long face time with the whales. It was our time and when I reached the whales they were still at the surface.

The whales disappear

Well, we were not so lucky, when we approached the whales they left and we only got a few minutes with the humpback whales, but it was a beautiful experience. We returned to the jetty and the waiting van in Neiafu. I agreed with the driver to come pick me up at 6 o'clock for transportation to Neiafu so I could have some dinner.

I was not looking forward to coming back to my room, no light in the bathroom and hardly any water coming out from the shower. And my bed, a mattress on the floor. I had expected more, well, never mind, I'm here to see the whales. But I will not live here again. Never mind the room and the standard, I only asked for a shower, desk and electricity for my equipment. But I had a very good dinner at Bella Vista.

I bought a bag of OREO that I will have for lunch on board the boat during my stay here in Vava'u. The lunch on board is like “MAKE YOUR OWN SANDWICH” and everyone is digging in to the boxes. No washing the hands and, well, I will bring my own lunch

My alarm is set to go off at 5 o'clock tomorrow morning and I'm excited to get out to look for whales. And if you want to know if we find any whales, you just have to click HERE.
