  We were hauling arse driving towards the Monasavu Dam. I had just checked the map and it is not far away so I thought we would be there in a jiff. We left the paved road at the crack of dawn. No it was a gravel road and I guess it will take longer to reach the dam than I had thought. It is kind of slow on the gravel roads, but it was a beautiful landscape, and a dramatic landscape in the first day light, GOREGEOUS!  A beautiful morning

It took us about 2 hours to get to the Monasavu Dam. The dam is built on top of the mountain and I was wondering on how they got all the equipment up there on this road. We had to report to the office before we could enter the area. We passed the gate and we made a stop at a small creek covered by bushes and vegetation. Just the area the Long-legged thicketbird/ Long-legged warbler loves. I played my recording and we could hear the Long-legged thicketbird/ Long-legged warbler answer. But it was impossible to see the bird. We made several stops to check for the Long-legged thicketbird/ Long-legged warbler but we could never see the bird even though we could hear it. We continued up the mountain and I saw a bird, reddish in colour flying in to a tree. We stopped and it was a Pacific Robin. Lo and behold, I managed to get a picture. There were several Fiji White-eyes, but I never got any picture. My Guide was out looking for Long-legged thicketbird/ Long-legged warbler habitat while I was chasing the small birds with my camera. He was soon calling me. He had found just the area the bird loves. A small rill, you could not see it because it was running next to the road, covered with grass. I was about to step in to it when my Guide gave me a warning. We followed the rill in under the bushes and there was a small waterfall. You can stand on top of the waterfall and we had a wonderful sight down under the vegetation. I started my play back, of course, no sign of the bird. You can try the place if you ever come to the Monasavu Dam. We continued walking up the mountain but there were no more birds to be seen. But I could hear the Giant Honeyeater all over the place. But from far away only so my play back would be of no use.  No sign of the rill

We call the driver and he comes up the mountain to pick us up. Now we will go check out the dam itself. No birds and we had a few pictures from the look out. We decided to get back to Suva and we would drive to a town east of the Namosi Road to check out some Java Sparrows in the town. We started to drive down from the mountain and it was a very step road and it went slow. By now we had been on the go for 8 hours, well, 8 hours since breakfast and we were getting hungry.   On the way back to Suva
We were very lucky and we spotted a Many-coloured fruit dove on the way down the mountain so I could get a picture, a very bad picture, but better than nothing. A very beautiful dove. We decide to stop for lunch and ice cream at Colo-i-Suva Rainforest Eco Resort. Original plan was to stop at a petrol station for ice cream. But now we were so hungry we needed lunch. And we had the company of a couple of Jungle Mynas in the restaurant. I went to the kitchen for some bread to feed them, but they were to scared. We also saw a Sulphur-breasted myzomela/ Orange-breasted honeyeater and a Masked shining parrot in the garden. But no pictures.  Jungle Myna at the restaurant

We finish the lunch and we drive to Navau to look for the Java Sparrow. We don't find the Java Sparrow but we see the Sulphur-breasted Myzomela. I get some pictures, not any excellent pictures but I was happy when we left Navau to drive back to Colo-i-Suva Rainforest Eco Resort I decided to stop in Navau on my way back to Nadi tomorrow. And I can already now say that I managed to see many of the Java Sparrow tomorrow on my way back to Nadi.  Driving through Navau looking for birds

I asked them to drop me at the Ministry of Fishery and Forests next to Colo-i-Suva Rainforest Eco Resort. My Guide work for the government and he told me that they use to see many of the Masked shining parrot. There were many parrots but they were flying high or sitting at the top of the trees so I did not even try to get a picture of the parrot. I walked up and down the area but the Masked shining parrot never came closer, and I was using my play back sound of the Masked shining parrot, nothing helped and I decided to go back to the hotel. I saw the Fiji Wattled Honeyeater and the Vanikoro flycatcher when I walked back to the hotel. I will go down the Colo-i-Suva forest tomorrow morning, my last bird watching before returning to Nadi tomorrow. More amazing poictures or not? Most likely not, but click HERE to find out.
