Day 26: Kanha

After breakfasts take sightseeing again take safari to Kanha zone and Kisli zone, Zones for Safari Forest department has divided the tourism zone under four zones in core area with Kanha zone being the premium zone and Kisli, Mukki and Sarai zones are non premium tourism zones. Khatia zone is in the buffer forest area. Later return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Sunday 31st of January 2016 and I could sleep until 6 thirty today. They are counting the tigers from today until 5th of February and we're not allowed to start the safari until 8 thirty.

We remember the last tiger from yesterday, she was wearing a collar. Same collar they put on the female Polar bears. The males have to wear a chip in the ear as the male Polar bears have a very Tiger Safari in Kanha Tiger Reservethick neck and the collar just slips of the neck over the head.

Anyway, they have put this collar on 7 of the tigers and now they study their behaviour.

They brought tea and Fruitfruit for me when they knocked on my door to wake me up at 6 thirty and I was enjoying myself in my room until quarter past 8 when we left for the park. Anyway, it was day light when we arrived to the gate for our safari in the Kanha Zone

Early morning is the time to see the birds and tigers and by now it was already warm, OK, so no need for any blanket. Below are some of the pictures I took during the morning game drive.

There is a park office in the middle of the Kanha Zone and everyone in the Kanha Zone have to register there. The rangers want to keep track of the jeeps in the park. Anyway, we were approaching on the dirt track when I asked my Driver/ Guide to stop.

We put the jeep in reverse and we went back 10 meters. I had seen a bird of prey in the grass. The bird of prey were gone, but I spotted an Indian Vulture in a tree. Later on we continued towards the park office and in a tree there must have been 10 Indian Vultures. We spotted even more vultures on the ground so they must be feeding on a dead animal.

I was very happy to have seen the Indian Vultures as they are endangered and there must have been at least 30 ++ of them. So this was good news for me. And that is even though they were too far away for any good pictures.

Among others I have used Peter Ericsson's web page Birds of Thailand These galleries contain 668 species of the Birds of Thailand and have been of a great help to identify some of the birds as the birds in Thailand and India are, well, many of them are the same.

I have had most help from my friend, the bird pal I met at Suan Rot Fai. Sending pictures of birds I have not been able to identify to him via Line. 3 minutes later he and he have managed to identify most of the birds I have had problems with. THANKS! Visit his web page m☥lever for his beautiful pictures.

And my new aid, maybe, and I say maybe the best aid. I brought my mobile phone as my SIM card have stopped working and I tried to get it to work again so I can use the internet. Thus I had my phone in my pocket on my first game drive in Jim Corbett National Park.

We saw a bird and I asked my Guide and the driver if they had a pen and a paper as I had forgot my pen and paper in my room. I remembered my LG phone and I recorded the name. And thus I will always bring my phone. Writing the name in the car and I have found more than once that it can be hard to read what I had wrote when I'm back in my room.

So now I always have my mobile in my pocket and it has been a great help.

Of course, all bird pictures available on my Indian
bird checklist of bird I have seen by clicking HERE

Of course, I have seen many many more, but this list is for birds I managed to get on picture

Some of the pictures are OK, and some of them are straight up in a very poor quality

We left the park at 12 o'clock and I was not happy about the time change. When we arrived to the park it was already getting warm and the animals are having their siesta. But I was very Kanha Jungle Lodgehappy to have seen the Indian Vultures as they are endangered and there must have been at least 30 ++ of them. So this was good news for me. And that is even though they were too far away for any good pictures.

We were back at the Kanha Jungle Lodge and they were waiting with wet towels, but I said no thanks as I have done on all the previous safaris. I had my breakfast, same as all the other breakfasts and I went to my cabin to check pictures and to continue with my web page. And yes, time turned quickly and it was soon 14 thirty and time to go back to the national park and my last game drive in Kanha.

It was a slow afternoon in the park, almost like all the birds and animals had left for holiday. But as so many times before, you have given up and around the next corner you run in to something exciting. There was a big male tiger coming out from the jungle.

And exactly like a small barn cat, he walked around marking his territory and it was interesting to see. And we were alone with him for a very long time, but when all the other jeeps came and it turned in to Disneyland I told my Driver/ Guide to take us out of there. It had been a beautiful sight and I didn't want that memory destroyed by the hullabaloo with the other jeeps and visitors.

Hell, you hear the people before you hear the car when they are coming through the jungle.

The first Indian Bison I see. I asked my Driver/ Guide how many there was in the park. There is about 6000 of them and I asked why we hadn't seen any. They are going to the mountains during the winter and as we're not allowed to enter 80% of the park we will not see them. But in the summer the park is full of them.

WHAT A FANTASTIC DAY THIS TURNED OUT TO BE!!! Well, yet another fantastic day. The Smiley with good newsIndian Vulture, endangered and I have only seen 2. Today we saw 30 ++ and this was good news and my Driver/ Guide told me that they are slowly recover. GOOD NEWS!

In the afternoon we were almost hit by a tiger coming out on the dust track. Many beautiful birds, and I was happy to see the Black Stork. We also saw the Lesser adjutant Stork. The Greater Racker-tailed drongo, I saw several of the beautiful bird but impossible to get a good picture. black-headed oriole, the beautiful yellow and black bird, several of them but impossible to get a picture.

We were in a very good mood going back to Kanha Jungle Lodge where we arrived at 6 o'clock. Dinner at 19:30 and I went to my cabin to look at my pictures from today.

Coming for dinner and my table was moved to the other side of the dining hall. There were several new guests and they had a long table where my table used to be. Never mind, I had my dinner, excellent food as always, and I returned to my cabin.

Wake up at 6 thirty tomorrow and we will leave for Pench and Pench Jungle Camp. Yet another road trip, but not so long, so this will be interesting. My next safari is tomorrow afternoon in Pench. And we just have to click HERE to find out if we will see any tigers.
