March 2025

Friday 28th of March 2025 and I leave to hotel and I stop at the vape shop. I buy one litre of e-juice. They have snus, but nothing I am interested in. The girl gives me a tip of a tobacco shop in town where they have plenty snus.
I cross the street to the taxi station, I downloaded a taxi app but there was never any e-mail confirmation so I could never get the app to use.
My first stop is the eBird hotspot: Nygårsparken Starting the eBird app at 14:16 and the first bird I can report in Norway is one Hooded Crow.
Common Woodpigeon
Mallard
Common Magpie
Common Gull

Listen to the Common Gull
Remarks from the Recordist
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.
Flying over the park, many of them. We can also hear one European Greenfinch in the back
|
I had a few minutes of sunshine in the park, otherwise it was gloom and grey. Many Common Gulls flying over the park making a lot of noise so it was impossible for me to record the European Greenfinch. Can hear it very week in the recording that turned out to be a recording of the Common Gulls.
I hear the greenfinches all over the park, but none of them seen. I heard a lot of other birds but none of them seen or identified.
There was a lot of pigeons, both ferals and wood pigeons flying around in huge groups.

Eurasian Nuthatch
Hi
Nice photo for a bird quiz
It’s a European Nuthatch. Sitta europea.
Spettmeis in Norwegian
Look at long, sharp bill, short tail and rufous flanks (hard to see, but you can just see it)
|
Walking through Nygårsparken towards the next eBird hotspot and the city centre and I spot one bird in a tree. Try to take a picture but I need to get higher up.
Climbing up the step hill side in the wet grass and dead leaves and I was about to slip several times trying to get up. Must have been my commando back ground saving me.
And when I reached the top the bird was gone. I will report the bird as a mystery bird and maybe eBird can ID the bird for me.

Walking towards the next eBird hotspot
Next eBird hotspot on my way to the city center is the Bergen--Byparken and I can see all the gulls flying around already approaching the park.
Of course, the first birds I see is Feral Pigeons and then I run in to on Common Starling and the starling have two friends. Eurasian Jackdaw and a few Hooded Crows.
There is a pool and there are many gulls and mallards. And looking closer at the birds and I discover Tufted Ducks.
I was happy when I turned off my eBird app, there had been a lot of birds and now I have put colour to Norway on my eBird world map.

I walk to the tobacco shop to buy snus, 150 cans and it is 1500 US Dollars. My luggage was about 10 kg lighter checking-in the luggage in Oslo compared to checking-in at Suvarnabhumi back in Bangkok where I had 38 kilo.
My luggage was really easy to handle after the custom adventure in Oslo, 1500 dollars and I decided to give up snus. I have carried hundreds of kilos snus around the world, and now it was enough. So, I will kick the habit.
I bought two cans and I walked to the “FLABBY AND PORKY” shop to buy a pair of trousers before going back to Clarion Airport hotel. I had bought some bread to enjoy in my room with a cup of tea.
But I went for my dinner at the restaurant and the bread turned out to be a waste of money.
+++++++++++++++
Saturday 29th of March 2025 and I woke up 20 minutes before 4 o'clock in the morning. I had a cup of tea while discovering that my phone had stopped to work. Well, the phone is working but the screen seems to be caput.
I searched internet for a shop, but not possible to call, and they could not call from the reception. So, I really hope Maersk Cancun will be delayed so I can get in to Bergen to buy a new phone before leaving for Mongstad.
But I was happy to have a hot shower, only cold water yesterday, and the only thing you are thinking of on the plane is to have a hot shower in the hotel room.
There was no news from the Agent, but it was raining so no bird watching today. I went to the reception at 10 o'clock and no messages. but just as I was about to leave there was a message, one more night.
Bergen International Airport outside my window
I went to my room and I got dressed and I walked to the airport to take the bus to town. I discovered a train station at the airport. Bybanen, yeah, the girl in the reception had mentioned Bybanen when I asked for a phone shop.
I had wondering what the she had been talking about. But it was the train from the airport to Bergen city centre.
The train seems to be leaving every 8 minutes or so. Going down with the elevator and I intentionally missed the first train as they are leaving very frequent.
The ticket was 4 - 5 US dollars and is valid for an hour. So if you are quick you can use the same ticket going back home again.
Bybanen
Bergen Light Rail (Norwegian: Bybanen) is a light rail system in Bergen, Norway. The first stage of the project was a twenty-station stretch between the city center and Nesttun, where the first 15 stations comprising a 9.8-kilometre stretch opened in 2010, and the second was a 3.6-kilometre stretch from Nesttun to Lagunen which opened in June 2013.
A third stretch from Lagunen to Bergen Airport, Flesland opened in 2017. The second line between Kaigaten and Fyllingsdalen opened on 21 November 2022. Further plans for the project involve mooted extensions to Åsane and Storavatnet.

Bybanen station at the airport
Paying for my ticket but the vending machine did not print my ticket, hell, there was not even a printer. I asked around but no one knew, there was the option to send the ticket with an SMS, but I do not have a phone.
There was something about the ticket on the credit card I had used to pay with. Never mind, I went on board and I spoke with an elderly couple, they thought the ticket was on the credit card.
The price is OK, 9 US Dollars to go to town and back, much better than the 110 US Dollars I had paid for the taxi yesterday.
The train was almost empty when we left Bergen International and I enjoyed the views.

The train is arriving
On my way to Bergen
Bybanen is a nice train
Passing a huge shopping center and I could report a Mute Swan couple swimming in the lake behind the shopping center. One more bird species for Norway in my eBird list.
Took around 30 minutes or so, could as well have been 20 or 40 minutes, I really don't know. The end station was at the park where I did my last bird watching yesterday and it took me 2 minutes to walk to the phone shop.
I bought one Samsung Xcover 7 and I went to the supermarket to buy milk and a couple of refreshments. I had planned for a walk in the park but it was raining and I gave up that plan.
I decide to go back to the hotel and I get on the train to the airport. And DARN! Walking through the terminal and I pass a pizzeria and I stop, just to have a look.
I end up with a bad pizza
Ending up with a pizza in front of me, and it was not any good pizza. Back at the hotel and they tell me that the Agent will pick me up at 8 o'clock tonight.
So, that's it, click HERE to find out if I make it to Maersk Cancun in Mongstad.
