Saturday 15th of March 2025 and I took off towards the Bang Pu--Recreation Center in the afternoon. Lunch (“TUNA & ONION SURPRISE” ®) and a bucket of tea when I come back home from Chaiyasit Muay Thai Gym and my session with The Red Devil (ปีศาจแดง ก.กุมานนท์)
Starting the eBird app at 16:24 and the first picture was of one Indian Cormorant sitting on the top of a concrete pole.
Flushing one Little Egret and one Painted Stork when I stop to take some pictures, but I see two of them in the big pond when I pass the pond. I report two Painted Storks as one of them might be the one I flushed before.

Driving around the area for almost an hour, I never bothered to go to any of the bird hides as it was very late in the afternoon. Never saw any exciting birds, the most exciting was the White-breasted Waterhen and the Siamese Pied Starling.
Saturday evening and the parking were full of cars and the pier was full of people.
Getting hungry and I managed to avoid stopping at any of the food stalls and I drove back to Sukhumvit where I turned off the eBird app.

Sunday 16th of March 2025 and I take off to Bang Pakong salt pans and the eBird hotspot: Bang Pakong--Sai Khlong Phi Khut 2 Alley salt pans to have a look for birds. I plunging down Sukhumvit on my Honda Giorno and it is light Sunday traffic.
I filled my “bird watching” racer with gasoline yesterday and I have my new flask with cold water on the handle bar so no need to stop on the way.
Passing the Bang Pu--Recreation Center going east and they are building a “fly over” and the traffic is used to come to a full stop there. But now the Sukhumvit is open for traffic towards west on the south side of the “fly over” and the traffic is flowing again.
It will be even better when they are ready with the “fly over” and I will save several minutes going east to look for birds. In a few months, maybe.
I enjoy the ride and I almost drive past the U-turn area at Bang Pakong, luckily enough, I discover where I am or I would have to continue to Chon Buri.
I start my eBird app at 11:13 and I get out to the salt pans. I was about to get stuck in the mud but I managed to get out. A little water on the dust and it turns in to some slippery mud.
We have had rain the last week but the rest of the area was OK to drive around in. The area had dried up, but I was very cautious driving around.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.
Very strong wind so most of the recording was cut. Two birds sitting on the mud in the pond.
Tibetan Sand Plover
Red-necked Stint
My flask comes in handy
Low water so not many shore birds in the area. And I had planned for this, thousands of birds and it is very frustrating with all the birds I want to ID.
And of course, many birds have left Thailand to go have babies up north.
I drive around for about 90 minutes before I return to Sukhumvit Road to drive back towards west and the eBird hotspot: Bang Pu--Recreation Center. I skip the stop at the restaurant and I stop my eBird app reaching Sukhumvit Road.

Reaching Bang Pu--Recreation Center and I park my Honda Giorno and I start my eBird app walking towards the bird hide. The hide is empty when I arrive, good, I had expected a lot of people as it is Sunday.
But there were some stuff at one of the chairs so someone had been here. And one girl arrived with a tripod and a camera, it was her stuff on the chair. She had been down at the pond side hide to look at the pelicans.
The girl stayed at Ramkanhaeng so it is quite far away, halfway to Chaiyasit Muay Thai Gym.
There were not many birds coming, except for a bunch of Scaly-breasted Munia. But I got to see one Common Tailorbird in the grass and I got a picture. The girl was not so happy as she never got any picture.
Hearing the Common Tailorbird every time I visit the hide, but today was the first time I saw the Common Tailorbird. And by luck, th ebird was hard to see in the grass.

Leaving the hide to go to look for the birds at the pond side hide. I say bye bye to the girl and I walk to the next hide. Sunday and I expect the hide to be full so I am pleasantly surprised to find only two bird watchers in the hide.
I take a seat and I spot some Little Egrets just outside the hide. I can see a lot of pelicans on the other side of the pond. And of course, plenty storks and egrets.
There are plenty Black-winged Stilts and many Black-tailed Godwits. The Black-tailed Godwit, some of them are almost in full breeding plumage and they are very beautiful turning from grey to rufous. This is how we see the birds in Europe.
The Common Redshanks are moulting and I could see one of them in breeding plumage. I guess the redshanks and godwits will be gone to make babies soon.

Leaving the hide to walk back to my Honda Giorno and I pass over the education area. There were people with buckets and I wonder what they were doing. I have seen people with buckets for some weeks now.
Always wondering what they have been up to. Do they collect things to bring home to eat? But today I went to have a look and they were releasing crabs in to the mangroves.
The area is named Pu, that is crab in Thai so the area has been famous for crabs back in the day. Today, most of the mangroves are gone, but now they have built crab houses and stuff fin the education area. So, I guess this is the reason they are releasing the crabs.
Releasing crabs
Crossing the bridge and I have a look at the old bird bath if there were any birds. I had seen the Plain Prinia here when I arrived. But now it was empty, maybe flushed by me crossing the small flimsy wood bridge.
Back on my Honda Giorno and I drove back to Sukhumvit Road where I turned off my eBird app. It was late Sunday afternoon and I have been on the go for several hours. No exciting birds have been seen, but I was pretty happy with the day.

Tuesday 18th of March 2025 and I take off to Bang Pu--Recreation Center and I start my eBird app at 15:27. My plan was to start the eBird app when I reached the bird hide but I decided to start by driving around the area to see if there were any birds.
Making a recording of a bird that I could not see and if I am lucky someone on eBird or xeno-cant can help me with the ID. I spotted one Black-capped Kingfisher.
Sitting on a wire next to the road and I drove past to get away so I could bring out my camera from under my seat. But the bird was gone when I came back.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.
Bird not seen and I cannot ID the bird call. I post on eBird and xeno-canto to see if anyone can help with the ID
Driving towards the parking and I grease myself up with mosquito repellent before walking to the bird hide. I walk via the old bird bath and I can see four Swinhoe's White-eyes bathing there. But the lightning is not very good, but I try to get pictures.
Passing the gate to the mangrove area and I spot one Collared Kingfisher in a tree. There was another Collared Kingfisher pestering the bird, flirt or fight? It is spring and all the birds are flirting in the area so there will soon be eggs in the area.

Releasing crabs
There is a group of people releasing crabs and I go to have a chat with them. I ask where they have got the crabs and they are coming from the market.
The hide is empty when I arrive but I am soon joined by another bird watcher. It is a very slow afternoon at the bath and the third bird watcher coming is leaving after a minute. The other one is also leaving and I am soon alone again.
Not many birds, but I got a picture of the Taiga Flycatcher coming for a bath. Two Dusky Warblers were chasing each other and it looked like a flirt, soon time to have eggs?
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.

Tea time
Manage to get a recording of the Dusky Warbler, so that is a new sound LIFER for me. It was a slow afternoon and I was soon turning off my eBird app and I walked back to the parking and my Honda Giorno to drive back to my room.
I stopped to buy a diet drink on my way back to my room. I decided to go visit my friend to see if he invited me for a cup of tea. It is actually too late for tea, will be hard to fall asleep tonight. Never mind, I had a bucket of tea, but no snacks.
I was hungry going to bed and that is good for my diet.
Canon had replied on my inquiry about the lens hood to my Canon RF 100-500mm IS USM that I lost last Sunday. 6 months waiting time to get a new one, and no guarantees that they would get it in 6 months. Seems to be the same all over the world, no lens hoods available.
+++++++++++++++
Wednesday 19th of March 2025 and I get on Sukhumvit Road and I start drive towards east. I will drive past Khlong Dan and then I will make a U-turn east of Khlong Dan to drive back to have a look for my lens hood.
It does not take long time for me to realise that it will be very hard to find the lens hood, the road side is full of garbage. Turning beautiful Thailand in to a garbage dump!
I realize that it will be hard to find my lens hood
Driving very slowly keeping my eyes on the road side and I had not managed to find my lens hood by the time I passed Bang Pu--Recreation Center. Speeding up to drive towards Seacon Square on Srinagarindra and one eBird hotspot close by. I have never been at the eBird hotspot: Nong Bon Park (Bueng Nong Bon)
I will start with the Nong Bon Park to see if there are any birds. I do not expect anything exciting, but you never know.
No camera, but I have my binoculars under my seat. I am soon discovering that the park is for bicycles only. Not allowed to drive motorcycle and I go to sit down on a bench looking out over the huge lake. Biggest lake in Bangkok?
Watching the lake
There is one sailing boat on the lake and I can see one wind surfer. There are many pigeons, otherwise not so many birds and I turn off my eBird app after 20 minutes.
Now I have been at eBird hotspot: Nong Bon Park (Bueng Nong Bon) and no need to come back here again. Hmm, maybe I will be back to try on the other side.

It is about 10 minutes to reach Seacon Square on Srinagarindra. I cannot find any parking for my Honda Giorno close to LOTUS and I leave going to Central Bangna.
I buy one MUJI cosmetic bag for my vitamins as I have had enough of lose vitamins in my suitcase. I go to eat Japanese food and coming back to my Honda Giorno I remember my lens hood. I take the elevator to Fotofile on the 3rd floor.
I ask for a lens hood for my Canon RF 100-500mm IS USM. They do not have any, but they can make an order.
- 6 months? I asked
-Yes, about, he said laughing.
I ask if they have any eye cup for my Canon EOS R3, but I am out of luck again. Driving back home and I had planned to stop at MACRO to buy some food for Friday. One of the Safety Officers and one of the Pilots from Bongkot will be in Samut Prakan on Friday.
BBQ at my friend's house or Swedish Sausage in my room? We decided to have Swedish Sausage and I need some groceries for our dinner.

Friday 21st of March 2025 and I start the day at Chaiyasit Muay Thai Gym with a session with The Red Devil (ปีศาจแดง ก.กุมานนท์) I have not been at Chaiyasit Muay Thai Gym for two days so it was nice to come back for some exercise.
It has been nice to rest my shoulders for two says, but now I need to get moving again.
Having tea with my friend yesterday and they called from a new agency and asked if he could come to work in Petchaburi. And he has to leave tonight and he cannot join us for food tomorrow.
We decided to go eat instead of doing any cooking in my room and we met at Robinsons. S&P have good food and I have not been there for a very long time now. I met the Safety Officer from Bongkot and his wife and we had tea while waiting for the Pilot/ Loading Master.
He had been doing some training in Sriracha and he came 20 minutes later.

Saturday 22nd of March 2025 and I take off to Bang Pu--Recreation Center to see if there is anything exciting to see. Parking my Honda Giorno and I start my eBird app after having greased myself up with mosquito repellent.
There are two guys in the bird hide when I arrive, one is soon disappearing but three other bird watchers are soon joining. And a little bit later two more bird watchers come.
There was nothing exciting, the same birds I have seen the previous times in the bird hide.
Javan Pond Heron
Swinhoe's White-eye

Swinhoe's White-eye
There was one Javan Pond Heron perching in the bushes, not moving at all and I never seen a heron like this before. This bird should be down in the pond looking for fish. Maybe the bird is sick, then I hope it is recovering very soon.
I walk down to the hide at the pond just to discover that the pond is almost dry. I meet the British guy and his wife again, they had been sitting next to me in the other bird hide.
We had a chat and they had been bird watching for a year and he told me that he was still learning. He really liked it, he was in my age and we agreed that it was nice just to go to look for birds and we were not missing the days when we had to go to the pub just because it is Saturday.

Time turned quickly and it was almost 6 o'clock in the evening and I walked back to my Honda Giorno. There were one Malaysian Pied-Fantail and one Swinhoe's White-eye at the old bird bath.
I did not report them in my eBird app as I might have reported them before. But I could report two Zebra Doves and two House Sparrows foraging in the grass at the small wooden bridge.
Turning off my eBird app when I reached my scooter and I drove back to my room.

Sunday 23rd of March 2025 and I take off to check out the Mueang Boran fish ponds to see if there are any birds. Turning on the eBird app at 3 o'clock and I took off on the gravel road.
I did not see many birds, maybe busy to build nests and to flirt. The first bird I could see was one Asian Openbill and of course, a few Zebra Doves.
There was a lot of cars driving by and I wondered what was going on. They disturbed me when I was looking over the ponds for birds. Whiskered Terns was flying over one of the ponds and I could make a recording of the birds flying around.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.
Hunting over the fish pond
The terns are coming in to breeding plumage and the bellies of the Whiskered Tern are becoming grey, otherwise it is hard for me to see the difference between the common and whiskered terns.
Colour of the bill is different, black and dark red, but that is next to impossible to see when they are flying by so a picture is needed. But with the grey belly it is not necessary with a picture.
The pond herons are starting to get in to breeding plumage and I could ID both Javan and Chinese Pond Herons. But still a lot of pond herons in winter plumage.
The big pond was almost empty and there were a mix of many white egrets foraging. And now I discover all the cars on the opposite side of the pond. I realize that it is people coming here to fish.
They pay a fee to fish and as it is Sunday there are plenty people coming to fish.

Monday 24th of March 2025 and I discover that I have forgot my phone when I arrive to Bang Pu--Recreation Center. This was not good, now I am not able to keep track of my bird observations. I can report the birds I don't remember as “present”
The birds will be reported when I do my eBird checklist back in my room. If I report a bird as “present” I just have to put an X and no counting and remembering necessary.
I drive along with my “bird watching” scooter and I see the normal white egrets. There is one Purple Heron and one Grey heron in the big ponds.
One Black-capped Kingfisher was sitting on the wire and I had to remember to put two different kingfishers on my checklist when I am back in my room. Collared Kingfisher and Black-capped Kingfisher otherwise there was nothing special.
Well, one striated heron was a little bit exciting to watch when it caught a shrimp.
