Saturday 1st of March 2025 and I took off towards the Bang Pu--Recreation Center in the afternoon. Lunch (“TUNA & ONION SURPRISE” ®) and a bucket of tea when I come back home from Chaiyasit Muay Thai Gym and my session with The Red Devil (ปีศาจแดง ก.กุมานนท์)
I left my Canon EOS R3 and the Canon RF 100-500mm lens in my room. Only my binoculars, JBL microphone and my new loudspeaker that I bought in Singapore. I have one JBL CLIP or CLICK, a small loudspeaker but a little bit too big.
My new is very small with a clip to carry in my belt, or in the belt pouch I use for the JBL microphone. So, everything I need in my belt and the camera and binoculars around my neck.
Starting the eBird app at 16:31 and I took off start to look for birds. No camera, but I got a recording of one Oriental Magpie Robin.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.
Lone bird singing from a wire and we can hear one bird answer
Recordings of this species are currently restricted.
+++++++++
Why are recordings of certain species restricted?
Some species are under extreme pressure due to trapping or harassment. The open availability of high-quality recordings of these species can make the problems even worse. For this reason, streaming and downloading of these recordings is disabled. Recordists are still free to share them on xeno-canto, but they will have to approve access to these recordings.
We do not take this action lightly, and we wish it were not necessary, but we have been convinced that the negative impacts of offering easy access to these recordings outweigh the benefits.
If you would like access to these recordings, you may contact the recordist directly.

Saturday afternoon and the area is full of people visiting the pier and there are cars parked everywhere. I drive around for a little more than an hour before I drive back to Sukhumvit Road.
I did not bother to visit the pier or any of the bird hides as I did not have my camera. I turned off my eBird app when I reached Sukhumvit and I drove back to Samut Prakan.
I will go to the salt pans tomorrow, a 50 km drive one way so I stopped to buy gasoline on my way back to Samut Prakan, so no need to do this tomorrow.

Sunday 2nd of March 2025 and I took off towards Bang Pakong salt pans, a 50 km drive and it took me about an hour to reach the area. I started my eBird app at 10:43b but before that I had a sip of water from my new “flask”
Perfect! And I had filled it with water before leaving my room so there was no need to stop at 7 Eleven to buy water as I would most likely have bought a diet drink instead.
My new “flask”
I am ready to get out in the salt pans
I did not expect many shore birds as it is low water and they will be at the mudflats looking for food. I spotted a couple of hundred terns in one of the ponds and I stopped. I checked out the birds with my binoculars.
I could not ID the birds, way too far away, but I took a few pictures to see if I can ID the terns when I am back in my room.
I am pretty sure it is White-winged Black Terns and there were many Tibetan Sand Plovers and stints in the pans as well.
Marsh Sandpiper
Marsh Sandpiper
White-winged Black Tern
Tibetan Sand Plover
Continuing and as it is low water there is not so many shorebirds around and that is good. Easier to ID when I see them. There are Tibetan Sand Plovers and Red-necked Stints.
There are of course many Black-winged Stilts in the salt ponds. There is some Black-tailed Godwits spread over the area and I count to 5 Whimbrels. The Black-tailed Godwit pretty much stay put when I approach as they are not scared. But the Whimbrels takes off making a flight call, and I knew it was a Whimbrel.
For me it is not so easy to see the difference between the Black-tailed Godwit and the Whimbrel. But the Black-tailed Godwit have a straight bill and the Whimbrel have a curved bill.
Click the picture for full size
1) Black-tailed Godwit
4) Whimbrel
Last time, before going to Singapore I spotted two Whimbrels and today I could see five Whimbrels. Approaching the first one and I thought it was Black-tailed Godwit, but the bird took off and I could hear that it was a Whimbrel.
I could hear the Collared Kingfisher all over the area, but I only spotted one of them when it was flying across the ponds.
Flushing one bird and I could see that it was a Common Kingfisher. Landing in a tree before diving down to catch a fish and I never saw the bird again.
Red-necked Stint
Red-necked Stint
Tibetan Sand Plover
Red-necked Stint
Spot-billed Pelican
Spotting two big birds approaching and I took my binoculars to see if it was Painted Storks or Asian Openbills. Turned out it was two Spot-billed Pelicans, the first Spot-billed Pelicans reported from this hotspot.
So, now I have 4 birds that I am the first to have reported from this hotspot:
• Spot-billed Pelican
• Eurasian Curlew
• White-faced Plover
• White-throated Kingfisher
There are hundreds of Whiskered Terns in one of the salt pans and there are hundreds of Brown-headed Gull in one of the salt pans further away.
Two Common Greenshank and one Common Redshank
Zitting Cisticola

Whiskered Tern

Brown-headed Gull
Zitting Cisticola
Three Zitting Cisticola and one Barn Swallow is put to my eBird report. And two small bittern sp. Not possible to ID, flushed the birds and they were flying away from me and the back was dark.
It was getting very hot and I was very happy with my new “flask” with water. But the water disappeared very quickly, say almost one litre on it. But I finished the water very quickly.
But the “flask” was a winner, no need to visit 7 Eleven risking to buy diet drinks and things worse than that for my diet. So, this was a good investment, 139 ฿

Turning off my eBird app and driving back towards Sukhumvit and I pass the Phloen Pakong Cafe (เพลินปะกง) Café Bistro n Play Space (บางปะกง) and it looked to be open. They have been building the place the previous times I had been here. Now it looked to be completed and I stopped.
There were quite a few guests at the restaurant and I asked if they had tea. She brought a box with tea bags and they had Earl Grey. I took a seat inside even though there was a terrace overlooking the salt pans. A little bit of AC would not hurt.
I ordered a German Sausage platter that I enjoyed with my tea. The sausages were, well, it went down, but nothing like the sausages I buy in Sweden.

It was nice to sit in the AC, I went for a quick visit to the terrace, but no birds to be seen. The tea and sausages set me back by 510฿ and I left for my Honda Giorno.
Driving back towards Samut Prakan and I made a stop at Bang Pu--Recreation Center but I did not bother to look for any birds as it was very hot.
And Sunday, so there was a lot of people Bang Pu--Recreation Center so I left. I stopped to clean my scooter before going to my room. The scooter needs a good scrub after the salt pans. It is very dusty and the scooter is very dirty by the time I finished the bird watching.

I will start a 5 days Oil Tanker Cargo And Ballast Handling Simulator course IMO Model 1.37 tomorrow. It is a 40 hours course and I will be ready with this on Friday. The course starts at 07:00 UTC, that is 14:00 LT and we will finish at 10 o'clock in the evening.
The course is held by Veritas Maritime Training Center in Constanta, Romania. Gives me time to go for my session with The Red Devil (ปีศาจแดง ก.กุมานนท์) at Chaiyasit Muay Thai Gym in the morning. But there will most likely not be any time for any more bird watching.
+++++++++++++++
Wednesday 5th of March 2025 and The Red Devil (ปีศาจแดง ก.กุมานนท์) is busy in the morning. And as I have my course in the afternoon there will be no visit to Chaiyasit Muay Thai Gym today. And that means a bonus bird watching adventure in the morning.
Well, morning, it was 10:40 when I started my eBird app reaching the gravel road leading to the eBird hotspot: Mueang Boran fish ponds
I can report 5 House Sparrows, 1 Zebra Dove, 1 Malaysian Pied Fantail and one Asian Koel before I got started. Coming down to the first houses and I stopped to take a picture of a Brown Shrike sitting on a wire behind the second house.
I am ready to start the bird watching
Brown Shriek
Brown Shriek
Asian Openbill
I continue, stopping to have a chat with three old ladies sitting in a small Thai Pavilion between the road and the pond. I continue and I stop after 20 meters to take a picture of one Asian Openbill foraging in the water.
Driving along the gravel road and I spot a lot of Indian Cormorants sitting in a mast and I stop to take a picture. I can see on the picture that it is Indian Cormorants.
There are not so many birds until I reach the wetlands. I see one Pheasant-tailed Jacana and one Bronze-winged Jacana. I see pond herons in winter plumage but there is one Javan Pond Heron, still moulting, but I could see on the back that it was a Javan Pond Heron
The pond herons will soon be in breeding plumage. There was also one Little Grebe swimming around. I counted to 14 whistling ducks flying by in one group and I could see them landing in another pond.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.
Sitting in a tree top, the last call is a flight call after the bird taking off. From 60 seconds to 90 seconds, we can hear the Plain Prinia
There are more cormorants that are too far away for proper ID. I had spotted some terns that I could not ID. Flying around so not possible to get any pictures. I got one picture earlier on and it was a Whiskered Tern so my guess is that the rest of the terns are Whiskered Terns.
Reaching the first houses south of the big pond and I stop to take a picture of one Blue-tailed Bee-eater sitting on a branch over the gravel road.
Moving forward and I stop at the wetlands and I see two Chinese Pond Herons moulting in to breeding plumage, one of them almost in full breeding plumage.
Blue-tailed Bee-eater
Moulting Chinese Pond Heron
Moult (US molt)
verb [no OBJ.] (of an animal) shed old feathers, hair, or skin, or an old shell, to make way for a new growth: the adult birds were already moulting into their winter shades of grey | [with OBJ.] the snake moults its skin.
• (of hair or feathers) fall out to make way for new growth: the last of his juvenile plumage had moulted.
noun a loss of plumage, skin, or hair, especially as a regular feature of an animal's life cycle.
There were also Black Drongos and Barn Swallows flying around hunting from poles and wires. There were three Black-winged Stilts foraging together with the pond herons.
Two Asian Golden Weaver was sitting on a wire but they took off before I could take any pictures.
Continuing along the gravel road that turns in to a cart track and when I reach Muang Boran I turn around and drive back north.
Stopping at the wetland again to see if I can see any additional species. No new species and I continue towards north.
Passing one pond and I see the Whistling Ducks and I count to 13 birds and I change my count from 14 to 13 in my eBird app. But it was close, counting to 14 when they flew by earlier.
Whistling Duck
It was hot and I really wished that I had brought my new “flask” but as I am close to my room I had not bothered. Driving back towards Praeksa Soi 8 and there were not much to see.
The last picture taken was of the Whistling Ducks. No kingfishers and I suspect that the Common Kingfisher have left Thailand to go elsewhere to have eggs. Same with the Black-capped Kingfisher I only see them during the winter.
Reaching the paved road and I stop to turn off my eBird app and I drive back to my room to have some salmon sashimi before I have to attend the Oil Tanker Cargo And Ballast Handling Simulator course IMO Model 1.37 at 2 o'clock.

Driving back to my room and I avoid to stop at 7 Eleven to buy diet drinks and I had tea coming back to my room. And I skipped the honey in my tea, only a little bit of honey in the first cup of the day.
Just got the result of my yearly blood test, no cancer and no diabetes. Using a bit of honey every day, but I do not want to push it as I do not want diabetes again. Since I got rid of my diabetes my eye sight have come back, so no need to wear glasses except for reading.
A wee bit of a shame as I have spent a lot of money on cool glasses.

Thursday 6th of March 2025 and we finished the course earlier than expected today and I took off to Bang Pu--Recreation Center for some bird watching. Tomorrow is the last day of the course and it is only a test.
Bringing my new loudspeaker and I will test it for the first time today. Getting on my Honda Giorno and I was soon on my down Sukhumvit Road.
Parking my “racer” and I walked towards the bird hide and I found myself alone in the bird hide. I tried my new speaker first thing and I could hear one Taiga Flycatcher replying, but I never saw the bird. So, the loudspeaker seems to be working fine.

I was a very slow afternoon at the bird bath. I was joined by another bird watcher after a while. We are soon joined by one big Monitor Lizard and when it left there was one small Monitor Lizard.
One male Plaintive Cuckoo was the only exciting bird at the bird bath and I was soon giving up walking to the bird watching tower.
The bird watching tower had people sitting there and I was about to turn around to leave. No seats, but they offered me a seat and it turned out to be a nice afternoon in the bird watching tower.
Soon alone with the guy next to me and we had a chat while looking for birds. The first birds I spotted was the Common Redshank and Little Egret just in front of the hide. I was soon discovering pelicans.
I got some hot bird watching tip from my new friend, among them a restaurant in Ayutthaya. We had talked about the Pied Kingfishers in Ayutthaya and I told him that I had been on a boat going around the river and there had been a lot of Pied Kingfishers.
He told me about the restaurant so there is no need to rent a boat. So, I will go there next time I have the time.

Time turned really quick, chatting with my new friend while looking for birds and we decided to go back to the parking. My new friend lives in Bangkok so he has a long trip, and 6 o'clock so it will be heavy traffic.
I have about 10 minutes to get back to my room, add a few minutes as I will have to fill up gasoline in my Honda Giorno
