Thursday 20th of February 2025 and I start my eBird app at 15:01 using the eBird hotspot: Gardens by the Bay and I walk towards the main entrance.
There is a lot of people but it seems like most of them are coming for the indoor gardens and the big trees. There was not so much people walking around the outdoor area.
It is very hot to walk around even though it is overcast. I am soon running in to one Javan Myna and two Brown-throated Sunbird. One of the sunbirds are singing above me and the Javan Myna. And it sounds like the Javan Myna mimic the sunbird.
But the Javan Myna is much louder and trash the Brown-throated Sunbird's song.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.
I do not know if the Javan Myna try to mimic the Brown-throated Sunbird. But the myna is really trashing the song from the Brown-throated Sunbird. Same Brown-threated Sunbird as in recording XC974683
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.
Sitting in a tree, two males and one of them singing
Continuing towards the Indian Garden but there is no birds, but I can hear one White-throated Kingfisher. Leaving the Indian Garden, well, took less than two minutes to walk through the Indian Garden. So, well, maybe we can call it a garden.
Spotting something looking like a wet land and I walk towards it. One Ornate Sunbird sitting in the top of a tree singing and I manage to get a recording of the bird. I pass one male Red Junglefowl.
There were two Yellow-vented Bulbuls sitting in the reeds otherwise I could not see any birds.
Passing the wetland and I walk along the Dragonfly Lake until I reach the Marina Bay. I only spotted a few small birds that i could not ID, too far away and I had not brought my binoculars with me from Thailand.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.

I had expected some birds at the Marina Bay, but I only spotted two Javan Mynas. Exactly nothing interesting and I walk back towards the Silver Garden.
This time I follow the path through the, I was about to write forest, but there are trees. Walking the other way and I followed the Dragonfly Lake.
I could hear one House Crow and I made a recording, of course, the crow kept quiet when I started the recorder. To take pictures was not easy with the birds sitting among the leafs with the sun coming in from the back.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.

Ornate Sunbird
Running in to one female Red Junglefowl after having walked past the Silver Garden. Time is turning quick and I decide to walk towards the Meadow and then go back to the Visitor Center and take a taxi back to Bliss Hotel in China Town.
I met a young couple and they were all excited to have seen a turtle.
- Did you see it? They asked
- OH! They are all over the place
They were from Germany and this was their first ever turtle. I asked if they should not be back home in Germany to cast their vote on Sunday.
- We have already voted
- Good, AFD need all they vote they can get to save Germany! You did vote for AFD I hope?
They looked at me like I was crazy. AFD, I might have been the first one they have met ever suggesting such a thing.
I could hear quite a few birds, but I did not see many birds. So, I did not have many pictures when I came back to the Visitor Center to get a taxi.
Turning of my eBird app and I book a GRAB and I was on my way back to my room after 2 minutes.

Today's track at Gardens by the Bay
But I was happy with the day and I will start here tomorrow morning. I returned my camera to my room and I crossed the street to have some Japanese food.
Walking back to Bliss Hotel and I bought milk for my tea and some snacks.
+++++++++++++++
Friday 21st of February 2025 and I did not wake up until after 7 even though my alar was set to go off at 4 thirty and at 5 o'clock. I could not fall asleep, maybe due to the tea and snacks I had when I came back to my room after my Japanese dinner yesterday.
I had tea and some of the cheese I had brought from Thailand before I booked a GRAB. I could see the taxi, following the taxi in my app. Passing my hotel disappearing in to oblivion. Ride arrived! And they charged me 4 $ ++ for cancelled ride.
I was TOP 1 customer in Thailand, but after a few to many “cancelled rides” with the trouble to try to get my money back I gave up on GRAB. Using it only a few times per year.
I had to book a new GRAB and I was soon on the way to the Gardens by the Bay. I asked the driver to drop me at The Meadow and I will start there today.
Getting out of the taxi and I can hear the Collared Kingfisher. I don't give a HEY about snakes and I get out in the jungle and I spot the Collared Kingfisher, but no good pictures.
Coming out from the wilderness and I can hear the Black-naped Oriole and I follow the tree line to see if I can spot the bird.
I never spot the oriole, but I flush a big group of Pink-necked Green-Pigeon and I count to 7 of them. There is one Red-whiskered Bulbul and one Yellow-vented Bulbul.

Walking around in The Meadow
Walking across the field and there is one Paddyfield Pipit and one turtle close to the bird. I spotted one more Yellow-vented Bulbul and two Scarlet-backed Flowerpeckers.
Walking back across the field and I pass the Meadow and I reach the Dragonfly Lake. The Dragonfly Lake cover the whole length of the western side of the Gardens by the Bay. But it is a very narrow, more like a canal down at the Meadow in SW part of the park.
Ther eis one male Male Pink-necked Green-Pigeon sitting in a tree when I pass The Meadow. I stop to take a picture.

Reaching the Dragonfly Lake and I take a seat on one of the benches. And there is soon one Ornate Sunbird feeding above me and I try to take a picture of the bird.
And the bird is moving around all the time so it is not easy to get pictures of the bird in the shadow. Sunshine/ shadow and many of the pictures were delated immediately.
I get a few pictures and the Ornate Sunbird is the only bird I see in the rest area. And it is a moulting male as we can see on the pictures.

I leave the rest area and I run in to a lady that is here to look for bird as well. She is in Singapore for 2 and a half weeks and she takes the opportunity for some birding.
We discuss what we have seen and she told me that she had seen night herons in the Kingfisher Lake/ Kingfisher Wetland in the NE corner of the Gardens by the Bay.
I told her that I will go there in the afternoon. I will go back to my room before lunch for tea and cheese. A shower and change of clothes and I will come back here at 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
I continued towards west along the Dragonfly Lake and one spotted Yellow-vented Bulbul flew across the walk path. I made a recording of the bird sitting in the hedge before I continued.
One Spotted Dove was sitting on top of a lamp post and I got a picture.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.

Leaving the Spotted Dove behind and I am soon hearing one Black-naped Oriole in one of the trees. I start to record the bird, but then it keeps quiet. The bird is jumping around between the branches feeding on what looks to be the bark.
I am now at the western end of the Gardens by the Bay and I turn up towards the Serene Garden and I sit down to relax at a small stream. There are three Collared Kingfishers flying around screaming at each other’s.
It is very hot so it is nice to sit down in the shadow and there is a cool breeze blowing so I am enjoying the beautiful Serene Garden. And I manage to get a picture of an Arctic Warbler before I leave serene Garden.
Walking up to the Garden Pod, a hotel, I think the highest point at the western end of the park.

Walking around in The Meadow
Walking past the Meadow and I am back at the rest area and I cross the bridge. I spot two Blue-tailed Bee-eaters hunting from a tree.
I hear a bird singing from a bush and I look in to the bush and I discover one Oriental Magpie Robin sitting in the dark singing. I make a recording before continuing towards the Visitors Center.
There is also one or two Yellow-vented Bulbuls chasing each other’s, and I think it is a flirt, not a fight so there might soon be eggs in the Gardens by the Bay.
Crossing the bridge over Dragonfly Lake and I walk along the north side towards the Dragonfly Bridge where I will cross the lake again.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.
walking past some restaurant, does not look like it is open. But I sit down on the concrete wall next to the wood bridge along the lake. I take off my left shoe.
Pain in my toes, same as when I was in Panama. Yesterday it was OK, but today I had a little bit of pain in my toe. Off with the shoe to rest the toes for a few minutes.
There are a group of Javan Mynas in the tree behind me and they make a lot of noise, until I start to record the birds. Then they turn silent, but I got a picture of three of them.
Javan Myna
There are two guys blowing leafs from the walk bridge with electric fans. What a pointless job. Leave the leafs, it is natural. But it is better than the Botanical Garden in Katmandu.
They removed the leaf’s leaving the garbage behind on the ground. In Singapore there are no garbage laying around.
I am getting very thirsty and I leave to see if I can find a vending machine for water. I know there is one at the Supertree Grove where I bought water yesterday.
Getting up on the Dragonfly Bridge, the bridge is quite high and I walk across the lake. I spot two Black-naped Orioles from the bridge.

Refreshment
Crossing the bridge and there are vending machines, I buy two bottles of water and a can of coconut water. I find a place and I sit down to enjoy my refreshments.
The coconut water was not any hit, but the water was very welcome. I had been walking around for more than two hours and it was time to go back to my room in Chinatown.
I walk back to the Visitor Center and I book a GRAB. I turn off my eBird app for the second time, first time was by accident when I enjoyed my water.

Today's track at Gardens by the Bay
Leaving Gardens by the Bay and we are in Chinatown in a couple of minutes. I make tea and cheese for lunch and I go through the pictures from today.
I go down in the reception to book a GRAB and I am soon on my way back to Gardens by the Bay where I start my eBird app at 15:03
I walk down to the Kingfisher Lake/ Kingfisher Wetland. I did not see any kingfishers at the Kingfisher Lake. But I understood why they had named the lake for the Kingfisher Lake.
There were three huge metal kingfishers around the lake.

Kingfisher Lake
Walking along the north side of the Kingfisher Lake and I spot one Dollarbird in the top of one of the trees. A little bit too far away for any good picture, but I give it a try.
After a while and I pass one more metal kingfisher. By the time I reach the Marina Bay I had only seen the Dollarbird.
Walking back along the south side of the Kingfisher Lake and I reach the waterfall at the Kingfisher Wetland. The first bird I see is the Yellow Bittern hiding in the vegetation and I try to take a picture.
There were two Grey Wagtails bathing at the water fall. Coming over the board walk in front of the waterfall and the is a fast-food area and I spot a White-breasted Waterhen foraging in the wetland. There are also two Javan Mynas bathing and I get a few pictures.

Walking back to the trail and there is no sign of the Yellow Bittern when I pass the waterfall. Turning left reaching the trail and I am soon passing the flying metal kingfisher.
There is one Yellow-vented Bulbul, but still no kingfishers.
I see the Dollarbird landing in the tree above me and I look for it to see if I can get a picture. I have seen Dollarbirds before, but I have never been close for any pictures.
Two Ring-necked Parakeets land on the same branch and the Dollarbird is soon chasing them away. But I manage to get a picture of them before they take off.

I got a picture of the Dollarbird and this is the first time I really see how beautiful the bird is. I continue along the trail walking towards west and the viewing platform over the wetland (Kingfisher Wetlands Wildlife Lookout)
There is exactly nothing going on at the viewing platform. Well, I can hear frogs, but as it is in Singapore I don't know if it is a real frog or a recording.
Exciting or not, but the third and last metal kingfisher is located at the Kingfisher Wetlands Wildlife Lookout and now I have seen all three of them.
The third kingfisher around the Kingfisher Lake
Leaving the Kingfisher Wetlands Wildlife Lookout and I walk back to the waterfall to see if I can get a glimpse of the Yellow Bittern. The bird is gone and I go to buy a bottle of water.
Passing a table with two girls and there is one White-breasted Waterhen. The bird is walking to the table and it looks like it is looking for food. The White-breasted Waterhen is generally very shy and I have never seen the bird like this before.
Buying my water and I walk down to the waterfront and there are no birds in the Marina Bay. I take a seat on one of the benches to enjoy my water.
And you would think there should be a view over the Marina ay from the bench, but no. You look straight in to a hedge 1 meter in front of you.
Looking in to the green
But at least there are a place to sit down, nothing you are spoiled with in Singapore. And if you find a bench it is in front of something and useless for sitting on looking for birds.
I decide to go back to the Visitor Centre to get a GRAB and to go back to my hotel. I was going to spend the rest of the evening in my room, drinking tea and eating cheese.

But I changed my mind after 2 minutes in the room and I went to the mall across the street to look for a place to eat. Looking for a Japanese restaurant but I ended up at a paratha place and I had three cheese paratha.
Some sweets
They want us to move to Thailand
Walking back to my room and I stopped to have tea and some sweets. Not good for my diet, but I have been doing a lot of walking today.
I will take off to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve to look for birds and crocodiles tomorrow morning. And you just need to click HERE to find out if I see any crocodiles and birds.
