Friday 11th of October 2024 and I slept very bad, waking up every now and then during the few hours I had before my alarm went of at 6 o'clock in the morning.
No tea so I had to drink water only and at 6 thirty I went for breakfast. The breakfast was like High Chapparal, the restaurant was full and it looked like they were walking all over each other’s at the breakfast buffet.
No tea so I just had some orange juice and some bread. I made a mental not to buy something to have for breakfast when I buy the water kettle.

My Guide arrives at 7 o'clock and we go out on the parking in front of the hotel. We can hear parakeets and parrots; I had heard them from my room.
I started my eBird app to do my first ever checklist in Brazil. We had two American Black Vultures soaring over the hotel and I had managed to get a little checklist that I could send to eBird before we left ibis Styles Belém do Pará.

On our way to the first eBird hotspot
I have two Guides and it looks to be a couple. My Guides come from Para Birding Tour, a company I found on the internet when I decided to go for a few days of bird watching in Belem before joining Nord Swift.
They wanted me to sit up front, but I always sit in the back. Then I have clear view to both sides if there are any exciting birds.
Our first stop is an eBird hotspot: Parque Estadual do Utinga and this is a huge park with many birds. We park the car and I start my eBird app at 07:28.
We are soon running in to one Yellow-bellied Elaenia sitting in the top of a tree singing. I get both a recording and a picture.
Recorded with my mobile phone using the Merlin app. High pass Filter applied with Audacity
One single bird singing from the top of the tree
We are soon running in to the beautiful Chestnut-backed Antshrike and I tried to make several recordings without any success. I managed to get a recording and a picture of the Piratic Flycatcher. Already two recordings that I can use.
Starting walking down towards the forest and I spot a place where they sell water, and it is getting hot and I am thirsty.
There is one Shiny Cowbird on the lawn but too far away for any pictures. But we are lucky, two Wattled Jacanas at the pond and they are not scared. What a difference from Thailand. One young and one adult foraging and they do not bother about us at all.
We continue to the kiosk to buy water and we sit down looking at the jacanas while enjoying the water sitting on a bench.

Our hero
It was nice with water and it was getting very hot. We continued down to the forest area and we see one Grey-headed Kite soaring over the area and there is one beautiful Black-throated Mango. Crossing the small bridge and there are booths with pushbikes for rent.
Holiday, the reason all the hotels are full and there was a lot of people in the park. It is getting hot and there is really no shade walking along the walkway.
We have dense forest on both sides and we keep our eyes out for birds and we can hear one Green-backed Trogon and we played the sound to see if we could get to see the bird.
And we were very lucky, the bird showed up and it is a gorgeous bird. In the forest and I needed to use a crazy ISO speed so the pictures did not turn out as food as I had been hoping for.

We are very lucky and we spot one Amazonian Barred-Woodcreeper but the bird takes off before i get a picture. But the bird is landing in a tree closer to us. At the same time, we see one beautiful Cinnamon Attila.
I was very happy with the morning so far, more than 20 new birds. Pictures and two recordings. It was getting very hot and I suggested that we would go back to the car.
We decided to visit two more eBird hotspots before calling it a day. I was dead tired, no sleep for a long time now.
I managed to get pictures of the Tropical Kingbird on the way back. I had one picture of the Rusty-margined Flycatcher from when we arrived, but the pictures were not any good.
We have Tropical Kingbirds as well, but my pictures was not any good. These birds spend the winter in Brazil and I saw them in USA in the spring of 2023 when they go north to have babies.

We return to the bench where we had our water. I am still waiting for the adult to join the juvenile on the leafs on the water. Would be beautiful with both of them together with the flowers on the pond.
The adult flies off to land on the leafs, and of course, the juvenile takes off. DARN!
There is one Great White Egret foraging along the pond and I have never seen a Great White Egret this close before, the bird was not scared at all.

There is a fruit tree at the kiosk and one Great Kiskadee land in the tree when we are about to leave. There is also one Black-throated Mango chasing an insect under the ceiling.
Never seen a hummingbird chase insect before. Maybe for babies, hummingbirds only eat nectars.
It wa shot and it was nice to get in to the AC in the car. I was very happy with the morning here at eBird hotspot: Parque Estadual do Utinga with 22 species.
And Brazil have got some colour on my eBird map. If I won the lottery, I would go around the world looking for bird in every country.

Turning of my eBird app and we left for the next eBird hotspot: Belém--Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA) and I could start my eBird app again after 25 minutes.
We spotted a group of vulture soaring above the university and I reported them as American Black Vultures. But my Guide discovered that one of them was a Turkey Vulture.
So now I have seen two different vultures in Brazil. But nothing to be excited over, I have seen both of them in USA when I was there back in the spring of 2023.

I walk down the road to take some pictures of one American Black Vulture when I see a couple of Ruddy Ground Dove sitting on a wire. I try to get some pictures even though the birds are between me and the sun.
The sun is pounding me while walking around so it was nice to get back in to the car. We drive around the university area, but no birds. I think it is too hot for bird watching now.
We stop when I discover some Southern Lapwings in the shade from a bush. We make a U-turn to try to get back with the sun in our back.
We are soon coming down to Baía do Guajará and we drive along the water front and we spot one White-winged Swallow.

We leave Baía do Guajará/ Guama River behind driving towards the gate to the university. This eBird hotspot turned out to be a disappointment. We have one more eBird hotspot to visit before we call it a day.
We reach the gate without seeing any more birds and I turn off my eBird app.

Ther emust have been some misunderstanding, I thought that we were going to the last hotspot before going to buy my water kettle and having our lunch. And of course, in Brazil and I want Brazilian BBQ, better known as Churrascaria.
But we ended up at Lider Supermarket to buy the water kettle and some groceries so I can have breakfast and tea in my room. The hotel breakfast was not very impressive. And we will also leave for bird watching before the breakfast open.
At the supermarket
We left the supermarket and then I found myself outside the restaurant. I had expected the last hotspot before lunch. But here we are and we got out of the car and one guy took our car to the parking and we went inside.
The restaurant looked very good and we took our seat at the buffet. There was a huge selection of salads and side dishes for the BBQ.
I took a plate and I went to have some mashed potatoes that looked very good. They came with a bigger plate for me and I told them that the small plate was enough. They all got very nervous and I was soon understanding why.
At this place you fill a plate from the buffet and then you go to pick up the meat at the grill. Then they weight your plate and at the end you pay for how much you have had to eat.

I have been to Churrascaria before and you take food from the buffet and they bring the meat to the table. Well, I learned something new. The food was very good and we were full by the time we left the restaurant.
We drove to the next eBird hotspot: Mangal das Garças and I started my eBird app at 12:31 when we parked the car. The parking lot was always full and it is due to the holiday.
The first bird we spotted was the Spotted Tody-Flycatcher in a tree next to the car. I only got a picture of the back of the bird.
There were three Blue-grey Tanager that I never managed to get on picture.
We could see one Great Kiskadee flying in to land in a tree. We could hear that there were two of them in the tree and I made a recording.

We are soon spotting 3 Great White Egrets and I am soon discovering that the park is full of them. Amazing, the city is full of the Great White Egrets and they are really not scared. They do not bother at all about people coming close to them.
There was a second chance with the Blue-grey Tanager, two of them in a tree together with one Great Kiskadee. The birds between me and the sun, but I was happy for the picture.
By luck, I spotted one Cocoi Heron among the Great White Egrets. Looked like a Grey Heron at a quick glance and I went to have a look. The bird was taking cover in the shades and it was standing on the knees.
Maybe the bird is sick, I really hope not. And if it is sick it will hopefully be well soon again.

It is getting hot and I am tired so I want to go back to the hotel. We walk around a pond and I see that they have Black Swans and Flamingos in the pond, but this is not any birds I want to report in my eBird app.
But we see one Boat-billed Flycatcher, first I think it is one Great Kiskadee but my Guide tells me that it is an Boat-billed Flycatcher. And when I look closely, I see that the bill looks like a boat.
I was very happy, I had seen a lot of “lifers” today, and a total of 35 species on my first day of bird watching in Brazil.

We walk back to the AC in the car and we drive back to the hotel. My Guides will pick me up at 5 o'clock tomorrow morning. I spent the evening in my room drinking tea with some cheese that I had bought at the supermarket.
I was very happy for my new water kettle and I can enjoy tea whenever I want.
I was in bed at 7 thirty with my alarm set to go off at 4 o'clock. Click HERE to find out if we see any birds tomorrow.
OK, it has come to my knowledge that we have senior citizens visiting my web page. How hard can it be? So it's not very easy for them to see the blue coloured links to the next page.
