Sunday 2nd of July 2023 and I was off to the Ancient City with my Lineman taxi and I will meet my friend at the ticket office at 9 o'clock. I arrived 5 minutes before 9 and my friend arrived a few minutes later.
I picked up the golf cart and I had the girl to take some pictures of me in the cart before I left the pick-up area.
I was waiting for my friend in the golf cart that I had already rented so we took off immediately when he arrived. Last time we started driving north on the west side, but we had found the eastern side more interesting so we started on the east side driving north today.
We drove along the water and we stopped to try to get pictures of one Plain Prinia next to the road. The bird was jumping around with food

We have covered the east side of the Ancient City and we have checked out 2 garbage dumps and we had seen quite a few birds. Not so many pictures though.
We will check out the last dump and the area on the north side of the Ancient City but we go south to check out one area that we missed last time. There was one Plain-backed Sparrow that I tried to get on picture. I discovered one White-throated Kingfisher in a tree behind the Plain-backed and we moved forward with the golf cart.
Surprisingly enough the kingfisher was not scared and I came close so I could get a couple of pictures. We also ran in to a Red-wattled Lapwing with a damaged right leg so it might have been the very same bird we spotted here last time.

We drive back towards the gate area and we decided to go explore the area where we had seen the beautiful minivets last time here at the Ancient City. We had already spent three hours here, and the time had passed very quickly.
And we had to cross the bridge again and my friend manage to do a very good job crossing the bridge. We did not see any minivets and no other birds showed up and we drove back to the entrance where we returned the golf cart.

Today's track at the Ancient City (เมืองโบราณ)
+++++++++++++++
Monday 3rd of July 2023 and I booked a Lineman at 6 o'clock and the taxi was here to pick me up a couple of minutes later. I got out of the taxi and I started the eBird app at 06:41.
Walking down the paved track passing the refreshment stall and I am wondering if I am at the wrong place. The trees they planted during the covid have grown up and are really huge now and it was like a forest.
Maybe good, not it might be possible to sneak up on the birds in the pond covered by the trees. So I might be able to get to see some birds. And kingfishers, I have not seen kingfishers in this pond for many years now.
But today there was exactly zero birds to be seen at the pond. I could hear one White-breasted Waterhen but I could not see the birds.
The field have turned in to a forrest
Fight or making baby
Fight or making baby
I continue through the park
There were two monitor lizards chasing each other at the pond, and they were big. But I could not figure out if they were fighting or making babies. I leave the pond and I am soon spotting another big lizard surrounded by crows.
There is a big fish next to the lizard, most likely caught by the lizard and the crows were enjoying the fish as well. I went to explore the board walk area and I spot one Stork-billed Kingfisher in top of one of the trees.
The bird is calling and I want to make a recording, but first I will try to get some pictures. I fire up my ZOOM H5 and there is another Stork-billed landing in the tree top. They take off when I start my ZOOM H5 Handy Recorder.
They landed in a tree 50 meters away and I follow the birds and I manage to get a recording. The birds are soon taking off again and I can hear them calling, but I cannot see them anymore.
Recorded with my ZOOM H5 Handy Recorder and High Pass Filter applied with Audacity
One bird sitting in the top of the tree and it was soon joined by a second Stork-billed Kingfisher. I was busy taking pictures and when I could finally start up my ZOOM H5 the birds took off to another tree. I managed to get the recording as I chased after them.
Chinese Pond Heron / นกยางกรอกพันธุ์จีน
Large-billed Crow
Striated Heron / นกยางเขียว
It had been raining during the night so it was very wet and my shoes was soaked after having been “off road” so it was time to walk back to the entrance to find a taxi. The park is really green with a thick foliage so there were not so many birds to be seen.
And many of the birds are busy attending babies in their nests.

My friend sent me a video in the evening. The Surveyor from Bongkot FSU singing a song on TikTok. We were driving down to the south of Thailand to visit him a couple of months ago. Maybe time to go back for a visit again soon.
But next time it will be by air, two day sin the car was a little too much. But now I have covered Thailand from the Golden Triangle all the way down to Pattani.

Wednesday 5th of July 2023 and I left Bangkok around 9 thirty bound for the eBird hotspot: Wat Tham Prathun in Chonburi. And I will stop in Sriracha to pick up my friend. And I expect to arrive to the bird hide around 12 thirty.
This hotspot is the place you want to visit at the height of the day as the bird come to drink and bath when it is getting hot.
We reach Sriracha 20 minutes before 12 o'clock and my friend is waiting so we are soon on our way to the bird hide at the temple.
My friend waiting at the Agent's office
Light traffic and we reach the temple in a jiff and I start my eBird app at 12:41. We discovered one car when we arrived so we knew that we would not be alone. But we were lucky, only one bird watcher in the bird hide so no problem to find a place to sit.
I had forgot my WalkStool so I need to use the plastic chairs. Lucky that I have lost all the weight so it was no problem to use the flimsy plastic chair.
The other guy had been here for an hour but he had not seen any exciting birds. But we hope they come here now when it is getting hot. We were soon having Black-crested Bulbuls and Racket-tailed Treepies coming for a cooling bath.

So after having seen the ordinary bulbuls that are there every time I am in the hide it was a little exciting when three Puff-throated Babblers landing at the bird bath. There was also one Greater Racket-tailed Drongo landing.
The Greater Racket-tailed Drongo took off before I had a chance to get any pictures and the bird never came back, so no pictures.
We could hear the Blue-winged Pitta, but no sight of the bird. I made two recordings of birds that I could not see and I will put them on birdforum and the canto-xeno forum to see if anyone can ID the birds for me.

We leave the hide quarter to 2 o'clock in the afternoon. I want to visit one more place before going back home. The eBird hotspot: Nong Chok--Khlong 12 ponds, paddies & reedbeds north of Suvarnabhumi International Airport.
Never visited this hotspot before, but I expect it to be pretty much the same as Lat Krabang, eBird hotspot between the airport and Nong Chok.
Time to leave the bird hide
We leave Wat Tham Prathun and it takes more than two hours to reach Nong Chok and I start the eBird app at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. We drove north towards the Paradise Village and we left the road and we got out on something that looked a road construction.
I spotted one Cinnamon Bittern (นกยางไฟธรรมดา) at the edge of the rice paddies and it turned out to be the first Cinnamon Bittern (นกยางไฟธรรมดา) reported at this eBird hotspot.
We made a U-turn and we drove back to the road and we continued north towards the Paradise Village. And we were looking for birds along the way. But not so easy to stop, narrow road and there was quite some traffic.

Cinnamon Bittern / นกยางไฟธรรมดา

We pass one rice paddy with an opening with bare ground covered with water. There are 7 Asian Openbills that take off when we stop. There are several Javan Pond Herons taking off as well, leaving two behind so I could get a picture.
The Asian Openbills landed in the trees next to the rice paddy, but too far away for any pictures.
We reached the Paradise Village and I asked the driver to stop, I could hear a bird making noise. We stopped and I looked for the birds and I discovered two Dark-necked Tailorbirds (นกกระจิบคอดำ) in the bushes 5 meters or so from the road.
They were chasing each other so I guess it is egg time. I tried to get pictures of the very beautiful birds. But they were jumping around all the time. I started my ZOOM H5 to try to get a recording but then the birds took off.
Dark-necked Tailorbird / นกกระจิบคอดำ
We continued and we were soon reaching the end of the road and we had rice paddies in front of us. We turned around and it is time to drive back to Bangkok, of course, keeping an eye out for birds on the way.
Last bird picture is a White-breasted Waterhen (นกกวัก) bathing in a puddle next to the road. We stop and the bird walk away and I get one picture before the bird disappears in to the vegetation and we continue south.
I turn of the eBird app when we cross the bridge over the Sip Song Canal, same bridge where I started the eBird app 52 minutes before I turned off the app.

We are on the country side, but the traffic is very slow and it takes quite a long time to reach the toll way. I had expected to be back home around 6 o'clock.
Reaching Bangkok and the traffic is at full stop at the exit to Rama IX and my 6 o'clock plans where really down the drain. We will make dinner, salad and pork collar, of course with tea when we are back home.
We are back home much later than expected and we started to make food first thing.

My friend took a taxi back home and I was off to bed. I will go to Chaiyasit Muay Thai Gym for yoga and a session with the Red Devil (ปีศาจแดง ก.กุมานนท์) tomorrow morning and I will have to start look for a new place to go to look for birds.
I found the Thanont Golf View & Sport Club and I called to see if they have golf carts for rent. So it looks like I will go to explore Thanont Golf View & Sport Club on Sunday, if I can make it out of bed in time. Click HERE to find out if I see any birds.
