Kaeng Krachan, Thailand safari

Saturday 2nd of July 2022 and time to go for a safari in Kaeng Krachan National Park. Last Thursday going home from Chaiyasit Muay Thai Gym after a session with ปีศาจแดง ก.กุมานนท์, The Red Devil, I was putting together a safari for the weekend while sitting in the taxi going back home. I had planned for 2 full days in Kaeng Krachan but my friend is working so it will be one full day in Kaeng Krachan.

And we will visit Kui Buri National Park for an elephant safari on the way back home on Monday. So, it promise to be an exciting weekend.

And I was thinking about my safari helmets that I ordered, I did not expect them to arrive in time for our safari. But coming back home and the parcel had arrived.

We will have to go to pick up my friend in Sriracha (ศรีราชา) He is on board a ship discharging and there have been nothing but problem so he is delayed by more than a day. IG broke down and they were kicked off the jetty.

Going back to the jetty after repair and they could not heave up the anchor, so more delays. So, he will not come off until the afternoon. But we still have time to make it for the safari.

The taxi came to pick me up at 11 thirty and we made the first stop at Samut Prakan to pick up my amulet that I had covered with gold. Our friend is delayed on the ship, they expected to be ready around 12 o'clock and a few hours later it was changed to 16:00.

Kaeng Krachan, Thailand safari
On the way to Sriracha (ศรีราชา)

All the delays and our friend have had to spend 3 days on board so he had no clothing and we have no time to pass his house on the way to the hotel. We drove to Robinson in Sriracha to buy some clothes for him. And to have tea while waiting.

We parked at Robinson around 3 o'clock and we went to look for clothes first thing. We found what we were looking for and we went to have a look for the S & P restaurant, but we could not find any and we drank tea in another shop.

I had two big cups of tea before we left for the jetty Singha Marine use for their speed boats. We parked outside Singha Marines office at 5 o'clock. Our friend had up dated us that they had completed discharging at 16:00 and pilot was booked for 6 o'clock.

My friend called and said he was on the way, now it was a few minutes after 6 o'clock. He callas 30 minutes later, by then we had expected him to have been here 20 minutes ago. He tell me that the speed boat have problem to let go the mooring rope.

No sign of our friend at 7 and we left for Baan Maka Nature Lodge. I was disappointed, we could easily have been waiting for one or two hours more if he had just told us. But now we expected him to shop up any minute. We took off towards Baan Maka Nature Lodge and we expect to arrive around 11 o'clock in the evening. And as the close the reception at 9 they will put the key to the room in the door.

I have booked and paid for 2 rooms so the driver will use one room as he decided to go home early tomorrow morning. Or he would have to drive all night long.

Sunday 3rd of July 2022
and my alarm went off quarter to 5 in the morning, but I snoozed until 6 thirty when I went for breakfast. My Guide will pick me up at 7 and he was in the restaurant. I asked for an omelette for breakfast but I could only order from the menu.

There was cereals and toast for free, but as this is like eating pure sugar I asked for omelette. I could only order from the picture in the menu and it was scrambled egg.
- I want omelette
- We only have what’s on the picture!
I got the scrambled eggs, but there was only one piece of bacon even though there were two on the picture. And I left the scrambled eggs behind.

I left with my Guide and it is about 20 minutes to drive to reach the gate to Kaeng Krachan National Park. We paid the entrance fee, 360 Baht for me and the car.

We drive along the road towards the Ban Krang Campgrounds, no internet access between the gate and the campground so it is very confusing with the eBird hotspots and I just spilt the distance in two and I start using the eBird hotspot: Kaeng Krachan NP--“tree tunnel”

There is a lot of birds, but too far away for any pictures. We reach the fruit tree next to the road, easy to recognised with the road covered in fruits under the tree. And there is always hornbills in the tree. Mostly Oriental Pied Hornbills but I have also spotted Great Hornbills (นกกก, นกกาฮัง) in this tree.

There is a lot of hornbills in this area and I managed to make sound recording of the Oriental Pied Hornbills in the tree. We could hear but not see the Great Hornbill (นกกก, นกกาฮัง) calling from a far distance. I made a recording, but the sound is very weak, but it is the bird sounding almost like a barking dog.

Bird not seen, and we hear the bird best in the beginning, there are a lot of other birds, among them the Oriental Pied Hornbill making noise from the fruit tree

We leave the fruit tree and we are soon stopping as we have a Banded Bay Cuckoo sitting in a tree next to the road. But it is too far away for any good pictures. The Red-wattled Lapwing are not so scared and I could get a picture.

So, a lot of birds but not many pictures. It was a gorgeous morning so I enjoyed the safari even though there wasn't many pictures taken. Of course, we kept our eyes out for the black panther, last time it was sighted was yesterday so I was excited.

We arrive to the campground and it is also an eBird hotspot: Kaeng Krachan NP--Ban Krang Campgrounds. We see two Blue-winged Leafbird but no good pictures as they jump around in a tree. No sign of any bear so we continued our drive north of the Ban Krang Campgrounds.

Going north and there are plenty signs of elephants along the road. Droppings, both old and fresh and freshly pulled bushes and small trees all along the road. We drive for a few hundred meters when we spot two cars along the road. One of the drivers warned us about a Silver-breasted Broadbill nest hanging over the road.

The nest looked to be ready but the birds were still adding building material, and by to looks of the small straws it looks like they are making the mattress inside the house.

There was a “dropping” on the road and it was a giant one so I had a picture while waiting for the Silver-breasted Broadbills to come to attend the nest.

There was more and more photographers coming setting up their cameras and tripods and they aimed at the nest to be ready when the birds arrived.

Walking along the dirt road

We drive along the dirt road and we park the car and we continue walking. The Guide goes back to get the car and I continue walking and there is a car passing. I see the driver pointing upwards when he pass under the bamboo.

So there is obviously something interesting and I have a look when I reach the area.

I don't see anything, a nest of some kind hanging from a tree high above me, but it looks to be abandoned. Otherwise, I see nothing but my Guide is soon arriving and he gets out. Turns out that it is a well-known Dusky Broadbill nest.

We left the Dusky Broadbills and we continued until we reached the Ban Krang overflow of Pran Buri River. There is an unmanned check point and we are not allowed to go up the mountain until 13:00. There is a camping on top of the mountain, Phanoen Thung Camp.

From there we can continue towards the Thor Thip Waterfall and that is the end of the road. Anyway, the road up the mountain is very narrow so until 13:00 it is cars going down so we have to wait until 13:00 before going up the mountain.

We turn around and we go back to the Ban Krang Campsite and my Guide will have lunch, I will skip lunch. Thai food is OK, but without the Jasmine rice I can as well skip the food. And if I eat rice my blood sugar will go off like crazy.

We drive along the dirt road and we spot 2 guys on the road taking pictures of something up in the trees, we stop to see what is going on. Some exciting bird? Turned out to be a Lar Gibbon (ชะนีมือขาว) and it was very low down. I have only seen them in top of high trees before.

We spot two guys, turned out to be from Singapore with a Guide on the road side pointing their cameras in to the woods. We stopped and we got out. They were trying to get a picture of the Black-and-yellow Broadbill, a gorgeous bird.

I saw the bird on a branch but when I had my camera ready the bird was gone.

Never mind, it was too far away for any good pictures anyway.

We continue toward the campsite and I turn off the eBird app at 11:59, in the nick of time for lunch. So far it had been a very good day in the national park.

We park the car and my Guide go to have lunch in the restaurant. I stay in the car and I call my friend, suddenly the Guide come back.
- The bear is here!

We find the bear behind the restaurant and the bear is climbing in to an incinerator to look for food. Of course, they should have closed the hatch to the incinerator. The bear lives close by the restaurant and I was told there is two babies as well.

But no sign of the babies today, but it is most likely the same bear I saw here a few years ago.

Sun bear (หมีหมา)

The sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) is a species in the family Ursidae occurring in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. It is the smallest bear, standing nearly 70 centimetres at the shoulder and weighing 25–65 kilograms.

It is stockily built, with large paws, strongly curved claws, small rounded ears and a short snout. The fur is generally jet-black, but can vary from grey to red. Sun bears get their name from the characteristic orange to cream coloured chest patch.

But there is one car coming in the opposite direction and we have to move from our position. So, we continue towards the check point at the river overflow.

The rain don't stop and we put the car in reverse to put us across the road with my side of the car facing the bird. Then I can take a picture of the eagle through the window.

Of course, as soon as we start to move the bird takes off so no pictures. We continue towards Phanoen Thung Camp and when we arrive the visibility is about zero and we give up the idea to continue to the Thor Thip Waterfall.

We reach the end and of the dirt road and it is some kind of a viewing point. No elephants to be seen from here, but I spotted Cattle Egrets in a far distance. Well, looked like the Guide wanted us to wait as there might be some elephants showing up.

But we have a four hours’ drive to get back to Bangkok so we left driving back to the gate.

We passed a couple of Streak-eared Bulbuls on the way back. And we stopped to have a look at the Gaurs, at almost at the exact spot I saw them last time I was here back in 2020.

I would have thought they were kept there if it wasn't for that I had seen them coming running from the forest.

Listen to the Chinese Francolin

Remarks from the Recordist

Recorded with my ZOOM H5 Handy Recorder. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.

I can hear 3 birds in the recording, one far away, one close and one very close. Can this be the Chinese Francolin? The loud bird sounded to be just next to the jeep but I could never see the bird.

Thanks to Marc Anderson for help with the ID, see forum https://xeno-canto.org/forum/topic/51018

Today's track at Kui Buri National Park Elephant Watching

We reach the gate without having seen one single elephant and we say bye bye and we leave Kui Buri. I am back home almost exactly 4 hours later.

Time to join Karen Mærsk so I can make some money again. Click HERE to find out how that turns out. A new adventure ahead.
