Birding/ Bird watching in Kaeng Krachan

Friday 12th of June 2020 and we left Bangkok at 8 o'clock and it was light traffic on Rama II highway so we reached Phetchaburi in a jiff. We left the highway and we were soon in the wilderness. Driving along a beautiful road surrounded by a green landscape. We reached Baan Maka Nature Lodge about 2 hours and 30 minutes after we had left Bangkok.

I checked in and the room was very nice and there was everything you needed. It was clean and I was very pleasantly surprised.

I brought my equipment and I went out to look for birds. I started by going to west passing the first bird hide on the NATURE TRAIL. The concrete path was soon turning in to a dust trail going up the forest covered hill. The owner had given me information about the place and he told me about a Black-napped Monarch pair building a nest along the trail.

I was on my way huffin' and puffin' along the dust trail when I spotted 2 Crimson Sunbirds and I tried to get some pictures. I was busy trying to take pictures, not easy in the forest, when I spotted a Olive-backed Sunbird singing in the next tree.

I met the owner on the trail. I discovered him when I was recording the Sunbird as he was hiding behind a tree. I was instantly impressed, a real professional. How many times have I been angry when people just burst through the landscape even when they see me taking pictures of birds, or making recordings? He came forward from the tree when the birds were gone and he showed me the Black-napped Monarch nest.

I spot one Blue-winged Pitta at the bird hide on my way back to the restaurant, but the pictures turned out very bad. I went to the restaurant and I had my lunch and I was very pleasantly surprised, the food was very good.

I finished my lunch and I started my eBird map and I walked down to the lake to see if there was any excitements. I spot two Hornbills first thing and they were not very scared so I managed to get pretty close to the birds.

Otherwise there was not much exciting regarding birds down at the lake area.

I could report one Plantive Cuckoo that I never saw, but I could hear the bird. The White-rumped Shama is very friendly around here, same as, well, pretty much everywhere you go.

Coming up very close and it looks at you like saying “Please feed me” I made a mental not to get some worms and I am pretty sure the bird will come and eat from my hand.

I go back to my room and I will spend a little time there looking at my pictures. At 3 o'clock I will be in the restaurant to see if we can go to the eBird hotspot: Kaeng Krachan NP--Lung Sin's hide (restricted access) And (restricted access) means that you have to pay a small fee to use the hide. The owner of the Baan Maka Nature Lodge told me that there might be a grey haired man in his 60's coming to collect 200 Baht.

If he would not show up I would give the money to Baan Maka and they would give him the money. It is OK with the fee, someone is maintaining the hide and they cannot work for free.

The owner had confirmed that I will have OK weather during my stay at the hide and we left the lodge. Reaching the trail to the hide, an opening in to the forest next to a tree with a sign. The trail was OK and it took me around 10 minutes to reach the hide.

One hide with 3 rooms and I took the forward room on the left hand side a few meters from the water well/ bird bath. And there was soon birds around the water.

There was also a lot of squirrels in the hide, all sizes, from very small to almost giant. And I spotted the Mouse Deer for the first time in my life. A very strange looking and small deer.

Chevrotain

Chevrotains are small even-toed ungulates that make up the family Tragulidae, the only extant members of the infraorder Tragulina. The 10 extant species are placed in three genera, but several species also are known only from fossils. The extant species are found in forests in South and Southeast Asia, with a single species in the rainforests of Central and West Africa.

They are solitary or live in pairs, and feed almost exclusively on plant material. Chevrotains are the smallest hoofed mammals in the world. The Asian species weigh between 0.7 and 8.0 kg, while the African chevrotain is considerably larger at 7–16 kg.

In November 2019, conservation scientists announced that they had photographed silver-backed chevrotains (Tragulus versicolor) in a Vietnamese forest for the first time since the last confirmed sightings in 1990

They will be here at 5 thirty to pick me up. Well, they will pick me up at the road and I left the hide just after 5 o'clock. Coming out on the gravel road and I spot two Oriental Pied Hornbills landing in the top of the trees across the road. I tried to take some pictures, but I failed.

I walk along the road trying to get a glimpse of the birds. Never saw the birds again and the car came to pick me up. I had an excellent dinner at Baan Maka Nature Lodge and I went to bed after having checked my pictures from the hide.

Going to bed and I was excited over tomorrows birding adventure. Click HERE to find out if I spotted any birds.
