Birding/ Bird watching in Japan

Monday 8th of April 2019 and we left the Pension Oshidori after breakfast and we started the birding at 5 thirty. My Guide have sent me two checklist and I hope to be able to cross off a few more birds on the lists today. Bird check lists as pdf files below:

Birding/ Bird watching in Japan - Miyake Nature Center

I spotted a few Izu Thrushes at the Miyake Nature Center, but again, no pictures. Crossing the main road and there is a walk / bike path going through the forest and crosses a few streams. There is a field next to the road and I spotted a Meadow Bunting singing in a tree but the bird was too far away for any good pictures. I spot a very small Eurasian Wren but no pictures.

Going back towards the Miyake Nature Center and there is a Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker in the tree where I had spotted the Meadow Bunting earlier. I never get any pictures, but I manage to make a recording of the Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker.

I was chasing a Meadow Bunting when I spotted this Woodpecker and I could make the recording.

The first sound is when the bird sitting in the tree. Then we hear a Japanese Bush Warbler and then the three last sounds is from the Pygmy Woodpecker flying away

Making the recording of the Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker and the Meadow Bunting is coming back. I manage to record the Meadow Bunting and I get a few pictures. I also made a video, but it turned out to be nothing but sh*t so you will never have to see it here.

We drove down to the Tairoike Pond but it started to rain and we left. We drove around looking for birds along the main road, but nothing and we returned to Pension Oshidori a few hours earlier than Rain in Japanplanned for. But we have been lucky with the weather in Japan until now so I cannot complain.

We will go to the Akigase Park in Tokyo tomorrow, but as the forcast say sunshine tomorrow and cold on Wednesday we swapped Akigase Park for Mount Takao. So it will be Mount Takao tomorrow as it will be too cold on Wednesday.

We can survive the little colder weather on Wednesday bird watching in the Akigase Park.

My Guide told me that a little cold meant snow on Mount Takao and snow is really nothing I want to experience.

I had a power nap and when it was time to leave Pension Oshidori the weather was OK again. We drove to the ferry terminal, we arrived on the south side and we will leave from the east side of the island. They have three ferry terminals and they choose terminal depending on the weather.

Departure time 13:45 and we stopped to look for the Izu Thrush on the way, of course, no luck. We eat ice cream at the ferry terminal and my Guide spot a Blue Rock Thrush siting on the concrete barrier a few hundred meters away. I grab my camera and I leave the terminal to go try to get some pictures.

Turns out to be a male Blue Rock Thrush sitting on top of the breaker when I approached to take a picture. I don´t come close enough for a good picture before the male took off.

After a while there is a female coming up to look for the male and I realize that I scared away the male that was courting the female and the female was surprised when he suddenly disappeared.

Of course, no pictures good enough for the bird to make it to my list of observed birds.

None of the pictures are good enough for the birds to get on “MY” list. But as I use eBird as well, I can upload the pictures to my eBird list.

As no surprise, the ferry was delayed and I was very happy when I saw the boat approaching. We will be delayed arriving to Tokyo and I was happy that it is only a 2 minutes’ walk to my hotel, Bayside Hotel Azur Takeshiba from the Takeshiba Pier.

Same ferry we arrived with, the Tachibana-Maru. Length 118m, 5,700tons. Passenger capacity 1,000. Launched June 2014 and is on the regular route from Tokyo to Miyakejima-Mikurajima-Hachijojima.

We meet some of the bird watchers we came to Miyakejima and they are on deck watching sea birds when we depart and they stay on deck until it is getting dark. My Guide come down to tell me to come up. The birds are too far away for me. I want close up pictures, not something in the horizon. Good for bird watchers, but not if you want pictures.

And I didn´t had the heart to tell my Guide that it was sh*t to me. I have been close to albatrosses and sea birds for 35 years plus, and then I mean really close to them. So this was not of any interest for me. But I went up for a few minutes to show interest.

And it was pointless and windy so I went down again. I borrowed 10000¥ from my Guide to have dinner in the restaurant. Only Japanese cash welcome.

No need for any cabin going back to Tokyo, and when I saw our cabin I was really happy that I had upgraded myself to a real cabin going to Miyakejima. You would have had to fill yourself with Rohypnol to be able to sleep in one of them dormitories.

But no problem during the day tour. I found a place in one of the salons where I looked at my pictures waiting for the restaurant to open at 17 thirty. I was very hungry, there was vending machines, but I wanted to eat real food.

I was soon to find out that they only accepted food tickets in the restaurant but they were very helpful and they showed me the ticket machine outside the restaurant. And the food was good.

Scheduled arriving time 19:50 and there was a message in Japanese at 19:47 that we would be delayed. By then I had already packed up my stuff, would have expected them to announce this fact way before the scheduled arrival time.

Anyway, I went on deck to try to take some exciting night pictures of Tokyo.

and Bayside Hotel Azur Takeshiba

I bought breakfast at Family Mart before I went to check in to Bayside Hotel Azur Takeshiba. They recognised me and they had prepared my room with extra pillows. I don't know if it was due to a fully booked hotel, or if they just liked me :) But I had a very nice room this time, and I have a hard time believing that you can find something better for this price in Tokyo.

Everything I needed, a place to put my luggage and a desk so I was very happy with this room.

I was soon in bed with my alarm set to go off at 4 o´clock. Thinking about it, they must have recognised me at the reception when I checked in. I left for my room and one of the girls came running after me.
- Wake up call at 4 o´clock?

Tomorrow will be an adventurous day, bird watching on Mount Takao and you just need to click HERE to find out if we find any birds.
