Friday 8th of August 2025 and I leave for Trelleborg at 8 o'clock in the morning. I have booked to be at the police at 10 o'clock. That is the only time available in Skåne today.
Well, there was one time at 14:00 in Klippan, or was it in Åstorp? Never mind, I choose to go to Trelleborg. And I will take the opportunity to have a look for the European Bee-eater.
I arrived to the police station quarter to 10 and I was ready one minute later. Now I have to wait for them to finish my passport. It was way quicker than expected, 3 to 4 working days. So, I skipped the bird watching in Holland, Belgium and Luxemburg.
I can hopefully go back home next weekend.
Parking the car at Maglarp’s Sandpit about 10 minutes later I find the parking area full of cars from Denmark, so the European Bee-eater is famous internationally. I walk to the bird hide overlooking the sandpit.
I make some sound recordings while walking to the sandpit, and I can hear the European Bee-eater before I reach the sand pit.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.

There are a lot of people in the hide, coming and going. The European Bee-eater is famous and this is the only know place to see them. And it is nice to meet bird watchers from far and near.
Gorgeous weather and I really enjoy to sitt in the hide watching the European Bee-eaters. There is also at least one nest with Sand Martins with the parents flying in and out to feed the babies.
I made one more recording of the European Bee-eaters, the bay was begging for food in the top of the tree at the bird hide. And flight call from the parents flying around.

Turning off my eBird app after 1h 20m and I decide to come back tomorrow again. If I have time, I will go to make a new medical exam. The passport will be ready way faster than I had expected. So, I will cancel my European birdwatching.
I booked a time at the doctor and I will be there tomorrow afternoon.
I walk back to the car and I leave the sandpit to go back north. I stop to fill up gas and to buy some refreshments. I discover that they have soft ice cream and I ask for one cone.
- What size?
- The biggest, of course. Stupid question!
He bring out a cone to fill with ice cream.
What the duck is that? I asked.
The cone was in the size of a super tanker. I have never seen something like it before, it was a giant. Will I be able to finish the ice cream?
I drove to my brother's house to make BBQ with my nephew and nice. My oldest nephew is working as it is summer holiday from school.

Saturday 9th of August 2025 and I am ready with my medical exam around 12 thirty. I drive north towards Morup's Tånge to have a look for birds. But the road to the light house id blocked by a gate and I drive back south.
I call my nephew and I will pick him up and we will go to buy meat for BBQ. We will go to pick up my oldest nephew at work. But he is asked to work overtime when we go to pick him up.

Sunday 10th of August 2025 and someone had reported one Common Kingfisher in Svalöv and I decided to stop there on my way to the sandpit.
I managed to find the Svalövsbäcken och Bäckaparken. Located in an area with private houses, but there was a parking, most likely for visitors to the park.
The park was beautiful with a small pond and there was a creek running along the park.
There are a big group of Mallards resting on the lawn next to the pond, and they were not scared when I approached. They stayed resting until I was 10 meters from them.
I was about 10 meters from them when they rose and started to walk towards me. They are obviously used to humans and if they are lucky, they will get some snacks.
Later on there were two small girls coming to feed the Mallards. There were four Common Moorhens, two adults and two babies. It was not possible to come close to the moorhens as they threw themselves in to the pond as soon as I tried to come close.

I never spotted the Common Kingfisher and I walked back to the car to continue to the sandpit. Drizzle, coming and going and I was almost in Malmö when I decided to go back towards north and my rented cottage.
The sky turned black and it looked like it could start to rain any minute. And it is Sunday so there will most likely be plenty people in the hide. Back in Helsingborg and the sun was shining again.
We started up the BBQ at 7 o'clock and this will be my last fillet of beef and pork collar BBQ. Pork collar is better than the beef, even though the beef is much more tender. This beef was very good, almost so you could eat it using a spoon.
But sausages are the best and from now on it will be sausages only. It is not so easy to find good sausages back home, so I will enjoy sausages the last days.
I can bring 60 or 70 kg on my flight, so, maybe I will find a sausage or two in my luggage when I pack up my bags.

Monday 11th of August 2025 and I left eBird hotspot: Rosendals våtmark where I have been looking for the Eurasian Spoonbill that have been sighted there. No luck with the spoonbill and I leave towards the sandpit in the south.
Heading south towards the sandpit when I get a message on the phone. My passport is ready for pick up and I turned around to drive back to the police in Klippan to pick up my passport.
I had extended the rent on the car and cottage as I expected the passport to be ready at the end of the week. Well, now I will book my tickets for Friday.
Monday and I had expected the hide to be empty, but the hide was full. I never seen so many bird watchers here before.

I spend two hours in the hide and I was actually spent most of the time talking with other bird watchers. And I was not so interested in the bee-eaters, I wanted to have pictures of the Sand Martin when they are flying in and out from the nest.
The Sand Martin is a very small and quick bird so it is next to impossible to get any good pictures. I got three pictures of the Sand Martin that I could use.
I turn off my eBird app after 2 hours and I drive back to my rented cottage with one stop at the supermarket. I bought some sausages and well, a cake. This was really bad, but it was not as good as I remember the cake. So, there will not be any more reason to buy cake again.
The sausage, I will bring it home to have a little something to enjoy at home. I already have some sausage in the freezer back home.

Tuesday 12th of August 2025 and I take off towards south at 10 thirty. First stop is at the supermarket to buy some refill for my SIM card. And I bought a lottery scratcher, I won 4 Dollars, that’s the price for the lottery scratcher and I took a new scratcher.
As no surprise, there was exactly ZERO coming out from the lottery scratcher. I continue and I make a stop to look for a “PORKY & FLABBY” clothing store. I stop to have a look at Centrum Syd. They direct me to Burlöv Center.
I reach Burlöv Center in Malmö but they are closed permanently. I check my map and I call a shop in Hyllie, they confirm that there is a “PORKY & FLABBY” department.
Driving to the shopping center in Hyllie and I found the shop. I bought trousers and I left for the sandpit. It was late afternoon and I was getting hungry. There is a petrol station close to the sandpit, the same place I bought the ice cream last week.
I filled the car with petrol and I bought two refreshments. But I skipped the ice cream as I want to shop clothing at “SLIM & SEXY” instead of at “PORKY & FLABBY” in the near future.
But I bought a small baguette, cheese and ham that I will enjoy before walking to the sandpit after having parked the car.
I park the car and I am the only car parked so I will hopefully be alone in the hide.
There are a pair walking past my car, and they are carrying binoculars so I knew they were on their way to the hide. I finished my snack and I left the car to go to the bird hide.
Pick-nick lunch
Reaching the hide and 10 minutes later there was quite a few bird watchers in the hide. It was really nice, not really and bird watchers. But they had read about the bee-eaters and they just came to see them.
Lucky that I was there, they did not have a clue what the bird looked like. And today there was really no action. I pointed out the nest for them and I told them that there was a baby in the entrance to the nest.
They were impressed by the beautiful bird. I also pointed out the Sand Martin nest for them. I also pointed out the tree where the adult bee-eaters were catching food for the baby in the nest.
The other days the adults have feed the baby every few minutes, but today they did not go to the baby in the nest. I don't know, but I suspect that the baby is big now and the adults want the baby to leave the nest so they can start moving towards south for the winter.
I did not see the parents give the baby food one single time today, so the bird will most likely leave the nest any second now.
Stopping to buy sausages on my way to see my nephews. They had run out of charcoal so we have to do BBQ tomorrow instead. So, I went to cook sausage inn my cottage before going to bed.

Wednesday 13th of August 2025 and I wake up to a gorgeous morning and I had my tea and some cheese before I went back to bed for a short power nap. Looking out over the fields behind my rented cottage and it is like a vitamin early morning.
I like this cottage in the middle of nowhere. Especially the view from the kitchen window, and the sun start to shine around 4 thirty to 5 o'clock.
This is what I woke up to every morning
This is what I woke up to every morning
Having been at Rosendals våtmark everyday to see if I can get a glimpse of the Eurasian Spoonbill. I have not see it yet, but I will visit the place again today. Driving along the highway and I see hundreds of birds sitting on a power cable across the highway.
Exiting the highway to try to find a small road to come close to the birds.
I think it is Common Starlings but I manage to get close enough for a picture and it is rooks and Jackdaws. Some crows as well. I was a little disappointed because it wasn't the starlings.
Now I am way off the road to Rosendals våtmark and I drive along another road to go visit Ausås Ängar. They are busy harvesting the grain. Most of it is done but they are busy with the last fields. And I get some pictures of an combine harvester working the field.

I turn off my eBird app, I got pictures of one bird that I will have to check-up in my books. I stopped at the eBird hotspot: Rosendals våtmark but there was no sign of the Eurasian Spoonbill.
Three Mute Swans, Mallards and two Common Woodpigeon was what I could report to eBird before continuing. My next eBird Hotspot: Hasslarps Dammar is a 10 minutes’ drive away.
Kind of wetlands and ponds, so this might be an area where the Eurasian Spoonbill might show up. I approach the ponds and I see about 55 Greylag Gooses sitting on the embarkment around the ponds. They are in one corner of the pond, they take off when I approach the birds.
I park the car at the same corner and I walk along a path one the eastern side of the embarkment. The bird cannot see me as the ponds are some meters below the top of the embarkment. And I am several meters below the embarkment on the opposite side.

Looking for birds
There are hundreds of Greylag Gooses and gulls on the other side of the pond across from the bird hide. I spotted 3 Red Kites in the area, soaring over the area and they also came down low over the ponds to have a look for food.
Suddenly, all the birds took off and the sky turned black with all the Graylag Gooses and gulls taking off. After I while I see one White-tailed Eagle coming in to land on the island in front of the bird hide. The island is covered with reeds and the bird landed on the other side of the reeds.
Impossible to see the birds and I could see one Grey Heon flying out on the other side of the reeds landing 100 meters from the hide.
Was it an eagle or was it the Grey Heron I had seen? I was not sure and I removed the White-tailed Eagle from my eBird report.

I was looking out the hide and I spotted Little Grebes and Mallards. The grey heron was suddenly gone and little later I discovered the Grey Heron outside the hide.
Trying to get a picture and I could see that the Grey Heron was about to get flushed, of course, I think it is because of me. Moving very slowly in the hide getting my camera ready.
Just as I was going to take the picture the bird was attacked by a second Grey Heron coming in from nowhere.
So, it was not me that had startled the bird, it was another Grey Heron startling the bird. Anyway, I never got a picture of the bird.
Suddenly, all the birds takes off again, now they are out in the fields as they never came back after last time they took off.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.
All the birds in the pond takes off at the same time, flushed by one White-tailed Eagle. Hundreds of Greylag Gooses makes a ot of noise.
At the end of the recording we can also hear my camera when I try to take pictures of the eagle.
Greylag Goose
Greylag Goose
Taking pictures of all the Greylag gosses and suddenly, the White-tailed Eagle appeared again. I was happy, now I know it was the eagle landing on the island in front of the hide.
This time I was lucky, the eagle landed next to the reeds on the island that I now call the Eagle Islands. I tried to take pictures of the eagle.
Poor pictures as the holes in the hide are covered with spider webs. I do not want to destroy the webs, and that was good. One fly got stuck in the web and I got to see the spider eating the fly.
It was amazing, 10 minutes and the fly was gone, a third of the size of the spider. The fly was gone, the spider dropped “BOBO” and then it went to sleep waiting for the next snack.

Walking back to my car and I am in good mood, lucky to have seen the White-tailed Eagle. I see two Blue Tits in the tree next to my car when I am back at the car.
I add the birds to my eBird checklist.
I turn off my eBird app and I drive towards my rented cottage. I will make a stop to buy milk for my tea. Driving along the highway to Hyllinge and I pass one big combine harvester on the field.
I make a U-turn to go back to try to get some pictures.

Sunday 10th of August 2025 and I stop at the eBird Hotspot: Rosendals våtmark on the way to Hasslarps Dammar. There was no sign of the Eurasian Spoonbill and I continued towards the eBird Hotspot: Hasslarps Dammar
Driving down to the end of the road. The road continues over a creek and there is a boom across the gravel road leading to a farm.
I flush a huge bird from the reeds, it is the White-tailed Eagle and it lands in the reeds, but I cannot see the bird again. There is one Whinchat sitting on the fence, too far away.

Grey Heron
Parking the car so I can overlook the reeds staying in the car to avoid startling the eagle. I see one Grey Heron on the other side of the reeds. I check internet and they had observed the Common Kingfisher at Naturum Vattenriket, an 1 hour 20 minutes car ride away.
I leave Hasslarps dammar to drive across Skåne to Kristianstad to see if I have any luck with the Common Kingfisher.
Nice weather end it is jou to drive through the beautiful landscape. The farmers are busy harvesting and to collect the hay in huge rolls on the fields.
I am getting hungry so I stop to fill the car with petrol when I reach Kristianstad. 5 minutes before, when I excited the highway, I had seen three Shite Storks soaring over the highway.
I filled the car with petrol and I went inside to see if they had any snacks. I bought a hot dog that I enjoyed in the car before leaving
Hot dog for lunch

Filling up the eBird report to report the White Storks to eBird before leaving the petrol station. I end up at the wrong place so I have to get going again and I can park my car at Naturum Vattenriket 10 minutes late.
I walk to the visitor center and it is a really nice place with plenty displays to show how the wetland is working. I asked the staff about the Common Kingfisher and she confirm that there had been people spotting the Common Kingfisher in the area.
I can see a bird hide from the Visitor Center and I ask her how to get there and it is just a couple of minutes’ walk to get there following a board walk.
Walking along the boardwalk and I spot one Eurasian Blue Tit in the trees and I try to get a picture of the bird, the second Eurasian Blue Tit since I arrived to Naturum Vattenriket.

I spotted one Long-tailed Tit in the trees and I tried to get pictures. I played the Long-tailed Tit call on my mobile phone and the birds came to have a look.
I could hear the birds all over the reeds but I could never see them. I was sitting on a bench looking over the reeds. It sounded like the birds were in the reeds, but I turned around to have a look in the bushes.
One Long-tailed Tit were sitting behind me, so close so it was impossible to get any pictures. There were three of them in total and I managed to get pictures of this beautiful bird before I continued towards the bird hide.
Recorded with my mobile phone using my JBL microphone with the Merlin app. High Pass Filter applied with Audacity.
Three birds in the bushes behind me.
There were two ladies in the bird hide and they told me that they had just seen a small blue bird flying by in front of the bird hide. They were unsure on what bird it was, but I told them that it was the Common Kingfisher.
We had a chat while enjoying the nice weather. But we did not see any birds. The ladies left and I stayed at the bird hide but I had no luck, not one single bird seen.
Time turned quick and I walked back to my car. I will do BBQ with my nephews so I ned to go back to the western part of Skåne.

This was my last birding in Skåne for this time. I will go to Copenhagen tomorrow to get my flight leaving Skåne behind. I was happy to have seen the White-tailed Eagle and the Long-tailed Tit.
I have seen a total of 36 different species in Skåne this time. But no new species so my Species count stay at 164 species.

Stopping at the supermarket to buy food and my youngest nephew have the grill up and running when I arrive. Preparing the salad and we throw the Falu sausage on the grill.
The food was very good, especially the sausage, and I had too much to eat. But it is kind of healthy, at least I like to think so. I also have a couple of Falu sausages in the fridge to bring with me tomorrow.
I made my laundry when I was back at my rented cottage, and while the machine did the laundry I packed my bags. I will take off towards Malmö to return my rented car, leaving between 8 and 9 o'clock tomorrow morning.
