Birding/ Bird watching in Skåne

Friday 4th of March 2022 and I went to pick up my car after breakfast. Back to Quality Hotel Waterfront to pick up my bags and I was off going south leaving Go:teborg behind with no wishes of ever coming back. I made a stop at school to pick up my certificate of completed course.

Back on the highway and I was steering south just stopping at a gas stop and supermarket in Laholm. I passed Lax Butiken without stopping to eat. I bought gas and I was very pleasantly surprised. I filled the tank and it was about 20 US Dollars.

Must be a very good car, half electric I think. I have not been able to drive between Go:teborg and Skåne so cheap for many many years.

Covid

I found my cottage and I checked in. The cottage is OK, I can live here but I am not so happy with the shower in the basement. I have to go outside and down the ladder to the basement, nothing I look forward to. Out in the cold to have a shower.

Saturday 5th of March 2022
and I will start by checking out a few eBird hotspots along the beach just north of Båstad. You can get out on the beach with your car and I hope to be able to sneak up on the birds.

I will start at Skummeslövsstrand and then Mellbystrand. It is the same beach but have different names. And Mellbystrand is north of Skummeslövsstrand.

I spotted Oystercatcher and Mallards as soon as I came down on the beach in Skummeslöv. And there was a pair of Goldeneyes diving for food behind the Oystercatchers. Too far away for any good pictures. I could have got closer but I did not want to go further out with the car.

Driving north on the beach and there was Hooded Crows and Jackdaws foraging in the seaweeds on the beach. And of course, a few gulls along the beach.

Today's track at Skummeslövsstrand

I leave Skummeslövsstrand and I drive a few hundred meters north on the paved road and I turn left again. After hundred meters or so I am on Mellbystrand and I start to drive north on the beach. And now I am a bit more of a Dare Devil and I drive all the way out on the dry sand trying to get closer to birds I hope to see.

I spotted 5 Common Ringed Plovers and as I was driving further out I managed to come quite close to the birds. The sand flats came to an end and I got back to the beach and I spotted 5 birds that I had never seen before.

I checked last eBird list and I could see that it was a Snow Bunting. First time for me to see this bird so I was very happy.

Mellbystrand
Today's track at Mellbystrand

I had to stop the track in my eBird app. I managed to hit the only soft spot on the beach. I got stuck in the sand. 4 people spotted me and they came to help carrying 2 planks so we could try to remove some sands. We gave up after 30 minutes and I called a tow car.

It was very nice to get out from the sand and I left the beach driving back home to the cottage for some food as I was getting hungry.

and I drove down Hallandsåsen when I left my cottage at 9 o'clock. I came down west of Båstad so I decided to visit 2 eBird hotspots in Kattvik before going to look for the Snow Buntings.

I spotted one Common Buzzard just before Norrvikens Trädgårdar. The bird took off but I stopped to report it in my eBird app. Passing Norrvikens Trädgårdar and there was a lot of birds in the rocks in the water. And of course, a lot of birds swimming around looking for food.

Bird watching on Kattviksvägen
Today's track on Kattviksvägen

I continued towards Kattvik and eBird hotspot: Kattviks Hamn. Not so many birds seen here, in the marina there was only 2 birds, Eider and Shelduck so this was a wee bit of disappointment. I passed the marina and I continued on the gravel road to eBird hotspot: Yttre Kattvik.

Not many birds, but it was a nice drive and now I have visited the eBird hotspots. But I will not bother to come back anytime soon.

I left Kattvik behind to drive to the beach north of Båstad as I really want to have some good pictures of the Snow Bunting that I had spotted yesterday. I reached eBird hotspot: Skummeslövsstrand and i got down to the beach and I started to drive toward north. Plenty Oystercatchers on the beach today.

And as the water level was 10 - 20 cm higher today I came closer to the birds foraging at the water line. The birds did not bother with me stopping the car taking some pictures. Otherwise, they tend to be scared and take off.

I continued towards the beach to have another look for the Snow Bunting. I had exactly ZERO luck with the Snow Bunting. There was the same birds I had been seeing yesterday so nothing to get excited about. It was quite boring actually and I drove back to Båstad.

I drove through Båstad as I had planned to check the birds on the beach along Kattviksvägen. I was hoping to get another chance with the Grey Heron, but no luck with the heron.

and I start the day on Kattviksvägen. I will give the Grey Heron another try. I drove through Båstad Golf Club and the only two bird I spotted was 2 Blackbirds. Yesterday and there had been a lot of birds.

Driving down from Hallandsåsen and I passed one Green Woodpecker sitting on a lawn. I made a U-turn but the bird was gone so no pictures.

Driving along Kattviksvägen and there was nothing exciting to see so I drove back to Båstad and to the beach north of Båstad to give the Snow Bunting another try. Today I spotted the Snow Bunting, 12 of them but I never managed to come close enough for any pictures.

I have a time to see the Doctor in Skummeslöv at 14:30 to renew my medical. The Doctor complained about the test results and I threw all the unhealthy food in my fridge when I was back in the cottage. I made a salad for dinner and it will be salad only from now on.

Wednesday 9th of March 2022
and I will start the day by driving to Helsingborg to pick up a parcel, well, actually 2 parcels. I have ordered K2 vitamins online and one Kitchen Aid pasta rollers. My parcels have arrived to Helsingborg a wee bit quicker than I had expected.

My plan was to pick up the parcels next week when I will live at Marina Plaza in Helsingborg. So, I was off to Helsingborg and it was 3-4 °C below zero.

It was a foggy morning and it was beautiful when the sun broke through the fog and the ice-covered trees was white in the sunshine.

Coming down from the ridge and I decided to drive back up again to try to get some pictures. The ridge is very high so the ice is covering the trees on the top.

So, I needed to get back up to get the pictures, and the ice will be gene very quickly as soon as the sun is breaking through the fog.

I reached Helsingborg and I started by picking up my vitamins in the city center, close to the hotel I will stay at next week. I left Helsingborg and I picked up my Kitchen Aid kit at the gas stop where the high way starts.

Now I can't wait to get back home to try the pasta machine. My friend and I tried to do pasta by hand but it ended with us having to open a pack of spaghetti.

I stopped at Aquilla Center before going back north. I will buy some cranberry juice as I will try to improve my blood values for the test tomorrow. After the visit to the Doctor yesterday I searched the internet for info about protein in the urine. Cranberry juice was a good thing to drink to lower the protein levels. At least according to one site.

They had parking spaces with chargers for the car and I decided to test to charge my rented car. First time for me charging a car.

I stopped at Rosendals Wetlands to have a look for birds before continuing to Skummeslövsstrand to look for the Snow Bunting. I spotted 4 Grey Herons approaching the wetlands and it looked like two of them were fighting. I spotted 20 Northern Lapwings at Rosendals Wetlands, the first Lapwings for this year.

There was a lot of birds as usually, but most of them too far away for any proper ID. I left and I was soon on the highway going north towards eBird hotspot: Skummeslövsstrand where I hope to get lucky with the Snow Bunting.

It was full winter when I left the cottage and now it was almost full summer. Not a good time of the year as you need to bring a lot of clothing. Walk in shorts or full winter gear. When I reached Skummeslövsstrand at was still very nice weather, but the cold fog was blowing in from the sea.

Poor visibility over the beach so I had to come quite close before I could see the birds. I was driving north towards the Snow Bunting area and I was spotting Blue Tits and Great Tits starting to flirt, so it is soon time to have babies.

I spotted a lot of Magpies as well. But there was no sign of the Snow Buntings.

I drove around looking for the Snow Buntings for a while before starting to drive south again.

Thursday 10th of March 2022
and I left my cottage at 9 o'clock driving towards Halmstad where I have an appointment with the Doctor at 11 o'clock. I stepped in to the Doctors office 20 minutes past 10. And they called me just a little bit after 11.

I had handed them a urine sample when I arrived. I had taken the urine sample when I was at the Doctor in Skummeslövstran and the Doctor told me that the protein in my urine was very high high high high high high high high high high
- OK OK. I get the picture, I said

She told me that she booked a time for me in Halmstad to check up everything. I thought I was going to die, she scared me to a blood pressure of several thousand. Anyway, I stepped in to the Doctor and he told me that the protein in my urine was very high high high high high high high high high high

I thought this was today's sample but I spoke to the laboratory staff and my urine sample was “NOT SO BAD”, just a very weak #1
- So I will not die?
- NO NO!

I was not so happy, why didn't the Doctor tell me this when I was in his office. I don't care for the sample we took a few days ago. I want to know about today’s blood sample. I left and I took the wrong turn in the city and I ended up along the Nissan River going through Halmstad and I took the chance to look for birds.

I spotted one Great Cormorant and on a lawn I spotted a huge group Mallards. There were of course Jackdaws and a couple of Black Headed Gulls.

and I left my cottage to go have a look for the Snow Bunting. I stopped to report a common Buzzard and a Red Kite on the way. Approaching Båstad railway station. I spotted one bird hunting over the field next to the road and I was thinking “yet another Red Kite

When I came closer I could see that the bird was flapping the wings, nothing I have seen Red Kites do. But I see the Kestrels flapping their wings while standing still in the air. I stopped the car and the bird landed on top of a lamp post. Too far away but I gave it a try with my camera.

Otherwise, it was the same birds that I have seen here every day so far, so no excitements to report. But I enjoyed the drive along the beach.

I reached the end of Skummeslövsstrand I changed the eBird to Mellbystrand. I spotted one Great Cormorant sitting next to a Great Black Backed Gull. And I learned something new when I checked out internet when I was back home.

Looking at the pictures and I discovered that the Cormorant had white feathers on the head and I was soon to discover that it is the subspecies P. c. sinensis.

And so far I have only seen Great black Backed Gulls, not one single Lesser Black Backed Gull. Looks the same, but the great have pink legs and the Lesser have yellow legs, the only way I am able to ID them.

I turned off my eBird app and I found my way to the highway and I drove south. I will have dinner with my brother’s family but I will have some time to kill before picking up my nephews at school at 15 thirty.

So, I drove to eBird hotspot: Rosendals våtmark to check out if there is any interesting birds.

Seems like the wind have blown most of the birds in to the corner where I cannot see them. West side was almost empty. I spotted a few Greylag Gooses and one Grey Heron.

Looking at all the seaweed that had been blown up on the beach and I was soon discovering a lot of Jackdaws and Crows in the black sea weed. After a few minutes I spotted a lot of small black birds and it was about 20 Starlings foraging in the sea weed.

I was looking for birds and I discovered that the swans was coming in to drink fresh water from a small stream coming out on the beach.

and I have a time for a PCR test in Halmstad at 16:00 so I will stop to have a look for the Snow Bunting on the way. Well, no luck with the Snow Bunting, but I spotted six Canada Gooses swimming 100 meters out from the beach. First time I see Canada Gooses this year.

I continue north towards Halmstad and I stop at eBird hotspot: Larssons våtmark (Wetland)

I park the car and I see a pushbike at the hide. I had been hoping to be alone but the guy on the pushbike left when I started to walk towards the bird hide. I met him and I asked if there was any exciting birds and he told me that there was Smews. Smew, a bird I have never seen before so I hope they are close so I can get pictures.

I had to look up the bird on the internet and it turned out to be a beautiful white bird. Lucky I had the internet or I would not have known what to look for. I spotted six Smews, two males and four females through my zoom lens. And they were too far away for any pictures.

There were many Coots and they looked to be looking for nest sites walking around on land. So this will be an action filled area when the Coots have their nests and babies. They will attack everything alive and it is very funny to watch them going on.

I left Larssons våtmark driving to Halmstad to take my PCR test before going back for the last night in the cottage. I will move out tommorow moving to a hotel in Helsingborg. So I need cash to pay the electricty bill. I stopped to look for an ATM and I ended up having a pizza.

Bird watching in Skåne has come to an end. I have seen 4 new birds that I have never seen before. So I am happy, but disappointed that I have not managed to get any pictures.
• Snow Bunting
• Eurasian Green Woodpecker
• Greater White-fronted Goose
• Smew
