Sunday 2of of May 2021 and my last bird sighting was the Collared Dove in Mellby and I drove north towards the bridge and I was on the main land around 12 o'clock.
And as I was going to visit my friend in Jönköping I turned towards NW reaching the main land instead of going south towards Helsingborg.
Approaching the main land
It starts to rain
It was gorgeous weather until an hour before I reached Jönköping when it started to pour down. I had to slow down due to the rain but I managed to reach my friend's house at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. The rain had stopped by then, good, we will have a BBQ before I drive to my hotel in Helsingborg in the evening.
I put on the kettle first thing so we could get some of the revigorating “Göta Kanal” tea. I was enjoying the tea while my friend prepared the grill.
Food is ready
Taste very good
Taste very good
The food was excellent and time turned quickly and I had to leave to get to my hotel before it was too late as I have planned to get up early to look for birds. I checked in at Marina Plaza in Helsingborg at 9 o'clock in the evening.
Monday 3rd of May 2021 and we have had one Hoopoe and one King Eider had been reported not far away from Helsingborg so I will go to have a look for them. I started with the King Eider that had been reported in Jonstorp and in Farhult. These two places are very close together as I see Farhult from Jonstorp and only a small bay between.
I arrive to the marina in Farhult and there is one bird watcher with a scope and he had seen the King Eider but very far away. I see some birds that I report in my eBird app and I leave to see if I can see the King Eider from the Jonstorp side.
I can see a lot of birds in the bay but only as small dots. There was 3 oyster catchers on the beach and a sea gull fishing next to the beach.

Stretching to see better and....
The bird caught lunch
Fishing in Jonstorp
The Sea gull came back up with a fish so they are very good to aim even though the fish was under water. And it is a small fish and we have seen them eating much bigger meals in one gulp. We remember the video from Falsterbo in the south of Sweden.
The gull on the video is really struggling with the meal.
Jonstorp is located north of Helsingborg and Genarp is located south of Helsingborg. That means that I have to drive pass “Kalle på Spången” to get there.
I have not any high hopes to see the Hoopoe in Genarp, but not to give it a try would, I am sure, be to break the law.
I called “Kalle på Spången” and they will have 20 raggmunkar ready for me when I arrive. 10 to eat there and a take away box with 10 raggmunks.
Driving south towards “Kalle på Spången” and I pass a pheasant foraging in the field next to the road. I take two pictures and then I spend about 15 minutes trying to get the bird to make sounds so I could make a recording.
I stop next to the road. I get my pictures and I decide to try to record the very silent bird. I spend 15 minutes to try to get the bird to call.
I sit in the car making sound trying to get the bird to make noise. You can hear that full embarrassing recording here: http://www.aladdin.st/europe-21/pheasantskaneimakesound%20forbirdtocall.mp3
Full embarrassing recording and we hear the bird in the end
I arrived to “Kalle på Spången” and I had time for tea and a few slices of the best bread in the world, Edvard's kavring.
I have not had raggmunksfo many years now and it was heavenly, one of my absolute favourites and they made 5 star raggmunks at “Kalle på Spången”
I was full when I left “Kalle på Spången” and, well, I had have a wee bit too much to eat and I also had a box of raggmunks. So there will be a wee bit to enjoy in my hotel room tonight.

I continued to Genarp and I searched the town and of course, no sign of any Hoopoe. I cannot say that I was surprised and of course I was a little disappointed. But I had expected to be disappointed. I had raggmunks when I was back at my hotel and it is still tasting very good.
Tuesday 4th of May 2021 and I decided to give the King Eider one more time and I drove north to Farhult and Jonstorp and yet again, no sign of the King Eider.
I give up the bird watching for today, and for a while as I will return the car in the afternoon. 64 days streak of birding according to eBird. Well, it have been 3 months of birding, only missed the days on board airplanes etc. Going to Singapore to join Roy Maersk end of May and I will need to sit in isolation before I go to Singapore.
I have had a great time in Europe but also a huge disappointment. Coming back from Malta and they enforced quarantine in Rumania, Finland and Denmark. So I will have to skip Danube Delta, Ruff Lek in Finland and the visit to Faroe Islands.
Singapore is delayed by a month and I decide to go back home to Bangkok. Click HERE to find out how that goes in the middle of the corona pandemic.
OK, it has come to my knowledge that we have senior citizens visiting my web page. How hard can it be? So it's not very easy for them to see the blue coloured links to the next page.
