Sunday 25th of April 2021 and I drove to Beijershamn and I started my eBird app at 08:28. I spotted two Marsh Harriers hunting low over the reeds when I drove to the parking area.
I parked the car close to the nesting box where the Collared Flysnapper nested last time I was here. The parking was empty but one car arrived after me.
I spoke with them as they had come to look for birds as well. They told me that the Collared Flysnapper had nested there last year as well. So maybe they are nesting in the box every year.
Western Marsh Harrier
But the flysnappers have not arrived to Sweden yet. Maybe I will get lucky and I will see the bird before I go home next Sunday.
I have two Eurasian Treecreeper landing next to the car before I have even got out of the car. I got out of the car and I spend time trying to get pictures of the Treecreepers.

I left the Treecreeper and I walked in to the forest to look for the Longtailed Tit, the bird I really wanted to see. I only seen it once before and that was here in Beijershamn 2 or 3 years ago. And yes, it is a gorgeous bird.
I played a recorded bird sound and the first Longtailed Tit showed up, but it was very hard to get any good pictures as the bird never sat still for more than a second.

I walk back to the parking and now the parking area is full. I had met a lot of people in the forest. I walked past the car and I continued down to the water front to look for birds.
There are many Barnacle Gooses and I also see the Redshanks walking around looking for food on the mud flats together with some Common Ringed Plovers. I also spot one Yellow Wagtail so the spring is in progress. A saw plenty of them on Cyprus just a month ago, the trees was looking like Lemon trees with all the yellow birds. And now they have reached Sweden.

I left Beijershamn and I was happy with the visit to Beijershamn. I left to explore some eBird hotspots and I started with Mysinge hög. Private area so no access and I continued. Next stop was the eBird hotspot: Sandby skjutfält--Hålnäsdungen.
I drove along Stenåsavägen towards Sandby skjutfält--Hålnäsdungen. I passed a Northern Wheatear and I stopped to report the bird in my eBird app.
I leave the main road and get up on a dirt track leading to the beach. And I had to drive very slowly as the track is very bad. Some small ponds in the meadow I drive through and I can see Redshanks and gulls. There is at least one Skylark in the meadow.
There are more larks but I cannot ID the birds, but most likely Skylarks.

I leave the eBird hotspot: Sandby skjutfält--Hålnäsdungen and I drive north towards the next birding site “Böda Hamn” I check eBird.net before leaving and there is two eBird hotspots on the way to Böda Hamn. So I stop there on the way to see if I spot any birds.
First stop is the eBird hotspot: Bläsinge
The other hotspot was Blasinge Harbor and there were birds, but nothing I had not seen before and I left for Böda Hamn further up north. I had seen Ruffs there last time I was on Öland. And it was Ruffs I wanted to see.
But no Ruffs and I only got pictures of a Wagtail and one Northern Wheatear.

I leave Böda Hamn driving south towards my Hotel in Färjestaden. I stop at the Supermarket to buy picnic lunch for the next 4 days. I will drive to Trollskogen tomorrow morning to have a look for the Common Firecrest.
+++++++++++++++
Monday 26th of April 2021 and I leave the hotel at 6 thirty and I leave Färjestaden driving north towards Trollskogen. I pass the eBird hotspot: “Färjestadens dämme” I see a Grey Heron and I make a U-turn to get back to see if I can get a picture.
No picture but I reported the bird in my eBird app before I continued north. Approaching Trollskogen and I decided to check out Böda Hamn just south of Trollskogen. I have not given up on the Ruffs. I start in the marina and I only got one picture, Oystercatcher.
I leave the marina and I drive north for a few hundred meters and I take off to a dust track. At the end of the track I reach a small boat place with one berth. So this might be the old fishing berth, hundreds of years old. But not so many birds and I left the area

Mistle Thrush

I park the car at Naturum, Trollskogen and I walk in to the forest where they have arranged a few colour coded tracks through the forest. The first bird I see is a White Wagtail at the parking. I spot a Blackbird when I come in to the forest.
There are all the normal birds. I spotted two Woodpeckers and a couple of the Goldcrests. I was very happy to see the Goldcrest but I was disappointed with the Firecrest. Maybe a little too early and I will be back in a couple of days to see if the Firecrests have arrived.
They have been sighted in the south of Öland so they might be here up north in a few days.

Out of the forest and I am back at Naturum and the picnic area. There are two ladies having their picnic at one of the tables and I go to take my picnic in the car. I enjoy my picnic. Roast with potato salad and I really enjoyed the picnic
I leave Naturum driving south through Trollskogen and I spot four Grey Herons in a small pond in the wetland. I never got any pictures but I reported 3 out of 4 birds to eBird. I only reported 3 of them as I was only 99% sure about the last bird.
They took off when I stopped the car next to the road.
Driving south
I had checked eBird for hotspots and there is a few south of Trollskogen and the first one was “Lykesand” and that turned out to be a waste of time. So I continued further south as there is another eBird hotspot: I have not visited before.
Södra Holm is located south of the eBird hotspot: “Lykesand” About 1 hour with car and I started my eBird app at 14:37 when I drive down to the coast line at Södra Holm. The dirt track was in very poor condition but I made it.
Plenty birds but too far away for any pictures. Put I spotted the beautiful Pied Avocet, two of them but no pictures.

eBird hotspot: Hallnäs udde, a hotspot I had never visited so I wanted to check it out. I spot a very beautiful Ruff, very close and I got several pictures. No good pictures and they went straight to the garbage bin.

Tuesday 27th of April 2021 and I drive to Ölands Södra Udde and I start my eBird app at 07:24. I drive slowly from the gate down to the light house looking for birds on the way. There are plenty gooses and seabirds when I approach the light house.
There are many Lapwings along the road as well. So drive slowly and enjoy the sights. Reaching the light house and the bird station and I park the car.

Still only black as the bird was between me and the sun. I need to see the tail, if it is a white tail it is a White-tailed Eagle. Looking at the bird and suddenly it took off and I tried to get some pictures for ID purpose.

I need to call my bank and also to extend my rental car contract so I drove back to my hotel where I had my breakfast. First breakfast at the hotel since I arrived this time. It was very good breakfast and I was full when I went to my room.
I finished all my “IMPORTANT” business and I was back in my car starting to drive north. My plan is to drive to the light house at the eBird hotspot: Ölands Norra Udde. The northern most tip of Öland. So that means that I have visited both of the light houses on Öland. The southernmost and northernmost tips of Öland.
I make a stop to fill up the car with gas and as they sell the best ice cream in the world I take the opportunity.

Well, I will not bother to come back here again, at least not this time on Öland. But I will come back to Trollskogen next door to look for the Firecrest.

Wednesday 28th of April 2021 and I will start looking for birds at Stenåsbadet and I will work my way south on the east side of Öland. And I will finish the day at the southern most eBird hotspot: on Ölands Södra Udde.
I started my eBird app at Stenåsabadet at 07:45. This is the place to see the Eurasian Curlew and they are seen along the dirt track down to the camping area. But they are very scared and it is next to impossible to get close enough for good pictures.
But there is plenty other birds in the fields so it is quite nice to drive the stretch between the road and the camping site.

Back on the road and I turn left towards south. Next hotspot is “Ottenby--södra udde” at Ölands Södra Udde. I drive for a while and suddenly, next to the road, a pair of Grey Partridges. I have seen many of them, but they are extremely scared.
So I was surprised when they stayed when I had stopped the car.
I continued towards Ölands Södra Udde and it did not take long before I spotted another pair of Grey Partridge. I put the car in reverse and again, I am surprised when the birds stay. Well, one of them took cover in the field, but one remaining and I took pictures.

I continue towards Ölands Södra Udde, but I stop to call Naturbokhandeln in Stenås. I need a bird guide and I ask if they have any at home. They had books and I turned around and I drove back to Stenås to buy a bird guide.
There are gravel on the road for a few km driving to the book store. I arrive and I am out of the car when a guy ask me if the road is as bad continuing south where I came from. I told him that the road was like this for a couple of km.
“Then I will not continue”
“Where are you going?”
“I go to look for the Ring Ouzel”
He gave me directions and I will go have a look when I have bought the book.
New bird book from Naturbokhandeln
They had the Svensson, but I already have this book, and it is useless as the pictures are so small so it is impossible to use the pictures, at least for me. They had another book that I did not like, but I bought it as it might grow on me.
A few ice creams and I was on my way south again and I will make my next stop at eBird hotspot: Ottenby--södra udde at Ölands Södra Udde. I started the eBird app at 13:33 and I walked around Naturum and the light house area. I walked to naturum passing the garden with all the nets they have put up to catch the birds.
The bird station at Ölands Södra Udde is one of the very important bird stations in the world. Every year they catch many many birds and they get very important information from rings on the birds having them, putting rings on the birds with no rings and they can follow any changes in the birds from year to year.
As we can easily understand, this information is very important. They can see the bird movement over the globe by the help of the rings, so it is a important job.
The big cages made out of nets, easy to fly in to. And every 30 minutes or so they go in to the cage, clapping their hands running towards the small tunnel and the birds fly in to the tunnel and they catch the birds at the end of the tunnel.
Anyway, I go to check out the area behind the restaurant and I can make a recording of one White Wagtail sitting on the roof.

I was very thirsty and I was lucky, the restaurant was open. So I bought two bottles of soda water when I left Ölands Södra Udde. I see birds in the garden and I try yo get pictures, Chiffchaff, Wren and Goldcrests. I talking with bird watchers passing by on their way to and from the light house.
I get a hot tip about a Common House Martin at the bird station and when I walk back to the car I spot the Common House Martin. And I have seen a couple of Barn Swallows as well, first for me in Sweden for this year. Give it a few days and here will be plenty of the Barn Swallows.
Same with the Chaffinches and Wagtails. In a few weeks these birds are to be the most common birds in Sweden.

I drove towards Trollskogen but I was tired and I made a U-turn in Borgholm and I drove back to the hotel and I slept for one hour before getting out of bed again. I decided to skip Trollskogen today and I drove to Beijershamn to have a look before continuing south to look for birds.
I checked the nest box but no sign of any Collared Flycatcher. I walk up in the forest to see if I can find any exciting birds. I leave the car behind when a Great Tit comes to say hello. The bird did not say hello long enough so no good pictures.
I walk along the path through the forest and suddenly I have another Long-tailed Tit that came to say hello. I managed to get two pictures of the bird
Long-tailed Tit / Stjärtmes
Male European Pied Flycatcher / Svartvit flugsnappare
I walked back to the car and I was happy to have seen the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and the Flycatcher. Approaching the parking and I see my second Nuthatch. The bird sticking out the head from one of the nest boxes at the parking.
The bird take off but now I know that there are at least one couple of Nuthatches nesting at the parking area. I would like to be here to see the babies, but by then I will be far away.
I also checked the nest box where the Collared Flycatcher nested last time I was here. The box looked empty and I got in to the car and I left Beijershamn.

I left Beijershamn and I continued south to visit the eBird hotspot: “Ventlinge badplats”. I stopped when I passed the Bredinge / Lilla Dalby fields to get a picture of a Pheasant in the field.
I was surprised, pleasantly surprised as the bird just stood there and I could get a picture. Otherwise the Pheasants are very scared and takes off when I stop the car.
Male Common Pheasant / Fasan
I get the picture and I continue towards south and reaching the golf course I turned right and I drove 200 meter and I reached the beach. Turning right again and I drove slowly along the beach. I see two dead swans a couple of hundred meters between them. They looked like they had been there for a long time. But there was two swans alive and they looked to be a couple.
I met a guy that was here to look for the Collared Flycatcher as it had been reported here yesterday. The weather was gloom and grey for long as I could see and I was soon having an annoying drizzle.

I continue along the dirt track until I reached a gate and I turned around and drove back again. I continued straight passing the golf course. I had my evening meal picnic at “Ventlinge badplats”
I enjoyed my picnic inside the car as the weather didn't allow me to get outside. But the food was good and I enjoyed looking at the birds while having my picnic in the car.

I leave “Ventlinge badplats” and I have one more eBird hotspot: to do before going back to my hotel. eBird hotspot: “Grönhögendammen” is just a little south from “Ventlinge badplats”
eBird hotspot: “Ventlinge badplats” is located on the north side of the golf course and “Grönhögendammen” is located on the south side.
Leaving the road getting up on the track towards Grönhögendammen and I see a Mute swan fighting with a Canada Goose couple. I see some birds and I try to get pictures of the Lesser Black-backed Gull but they are too far away.

+++++++++++++++
Friday 30th of April 2021 and I got away late as I did not feel like a million when I woke up. So I stayed in my room to around 8 o'clock when I left better. I left Färjestaden bound for Trollskogen with one planned birding stop on the way to Trollskogen.
So first stop is the eBird hotspot: “Bruddesta” about half way to Trollskogen.
I took off the main road and I drove down to the coast and I drive along the coast about 30 meters or so above the sea level.

Common Ringed Plover / Större Strandpipare
There was a lot of birds and I was especially happy to get pictures of the Common Ringed Plover, a bird I have not got on any pictures. There were many White Wagtails and Northern Wheatears in the area. Of course, hard to get close for good pictures.
I also spotted Barn Swallows so the spring is well in progress even though it is cold and windy.
Common Linnet / Hämpling
There were also Common Linnets in the area, a beautiful but very scared bird. So I was very happy over a couple of bad pictures. But better than nothing and I kept the pictures.
So I was happy that I had decided to stop here on my way to Trollskogen.

I left Bruddesta and I drove east toward the main road. Road #136 is the main road going from south to north on the island. Reaching road #136 and there was a Buzzard sitting next to the road. I made yet another U-turn, I have made a lot of U-turns here because of Birds of prey along the road.
I stop coming back after the U-turn. The bird takes off just as I stop and I take a picture. Not very good, but I was happy with the picture.
I make another U-turn and drive back towards Trollskogen. Reaching Naturum at Trollskogen and I park the car and I get in to the forest to look for birds. I was almost alone in the forest so this was good, no there people.
I was really alone as there were almost no birds to be seen in the forest.
I was looking for the Firecrest but I could only spot a few Goldcrests.

I have my picnic lunch when I come out from the forest and it is tasting good as usually. When I am ready with my picnic lunch and I call Naturbokhandeln to ask if they have the photograph gloves. Spring time but it is cold and the fingers are freezing cold.
So I need a pair of warm gloves and I can remove the fingers when it is time to take the pictures.
New gloves from Naturbokhandeln
I speak with some of the bird watchers at Naturbokhandeln and they have spotted Black-tailed Godwit further south towards Ölands Södra Udde. I asked around and no one had seen the Whith-fronted Goose or the Ring Ouzel. Two birds I would like to see before leaving Ölands.
I leave the book shop with my new gloves and I start at Stenåsabadet to look for the Eurasian Curlew. I spotted 5 of them, 3 when I turned the car to get back to the road. Approaching the road and I spotted wings turning like a wind mill. I thought it was a Greylag Goose.
But I discovered that it was two Eurasian Curlews making babies. Of course, by the time I had my camera ready they stopped.

I leave Stenåsabadet turning south towards Ölands Södra Udde. I had decided to drive back to the hotel when I am ready at Ölands Södra Udde. I never bother to go out of the car at the light house, just making a U-turn reaching the parking at the light house.
Going back and I spot a Ruff next to the road and I was lucky. The bird was not scared and it continued to look for food while I took a few pictures.
