Wednesday 1st of August 2018 and I leave the hotel and I cross the street to the bakery to buy some ready-made sandwiches. They had just opened and a man leaves the bakery with a bag of fresh bread. But they didn´t showed any interest for me so I left the place.

I left Friedrichstadt and I was soon on a bike track leaving the city. My behind was not too bad, but it will change in an hour or so. I didn´t bother to have any breakfast at Hotel Klein Amsterdam. Their breakfast was really not to be impressed by.

So I will have to stop for breakfast and my plan is to stop in Tönning for some breakfast. I was bicycling along road #202 and later on I discover that I´m on the wrong path. I should have been south of the river and now I was on the north side biking along the highway. So it wasn´t strange I didn´t recognise where I was looking at the map.

I was paddling and paddling and I was wondering when the duck I would see any sign of Tönningen keeping my eyes to the right and I was confused when Tönningen was on the left hand side. I had expected to cross the bridge on my right hand side but I had to turn left.

I was looking for a bike shop to buy a cushion for my saddle. Nothing like it around, but I found a cafe and I had my morning tea and some sandwiches.

I stop for tea in Tönningen

The tea was very good and when I was ready I got back up on the saddle and I paddled my way through old and historical Tönning. It was a beautiful part of Tönningen. I crossed a small stream on a bridge and I was soon biking along the River Eider until I had to turn right and leave River Eider behind.

I had to bike for a km or so and it was time to turn left to bike towards the Eider Barrage / Eider-Sperrwerk. My plan is to take a taxi from Eider Barrage / Eider-Sperrwerk to Büsum

On the road to Eider Barrage / Eider-Sperrwerk - Stop to look for birds

On the last stretch towards the Eider Barrage / Eider-Sperrwerk I stopped to look for birds on a bridge over a creek/ or small river. There is a small map over the nature reserve and according to the map there should be a small track along the wetlands and I choose to take this way.

There are signs that it is not a public road, never the mind, I went out on the track and it was on top of the dyke. I spotted a few bird watchers, otherwise I was alone.

I reached the Eider Barrage / Eider-Sperrwerk and there was a gate. Can I manage to get around the fence? Well, that will be a later problem as I heard an Oystercatcher in the water and I brought out my camera to see if I can get a few pictures of the Oystercatcher.

Eider Barrage / Eider-Sperrwerk

The Eider Barrage (German: Eidersperrwerk) is located at the mouth of the river Eider near Tönning on Germany’s North Sea coast. Its main purpose is protection from storm surges by the North Seas. It is Germany’s largest coastal protection structure. It was also intended to contribute to economic recovery in the districts of Norderdithmarschen (today part of Dithmarschen) and Eiderstedt (today part of Nordfriesland).

Bicycle holiday in Germany and I´m biking along the river Eider towards the Eider Barrage / Eider-Sperrwerk. I reach a gate and I see two Oystercatchers taking off giving what I think is an alarm call.

I was disappointed over a missed photo opportunity. But I still hear what I think is an alarm call and I look around. There was one remaining Oystercatcher between the rocks and the bird did not care much about me.

Found a fish

Two Oystercatchers took off and I thought that I had missed the opportunity. But the call continued and I discovered one Oystercatcher and the bird didn´t seem to care about me and I could study the Oystercatcher looking for food on the mudflats. I got a few pictures and now back to the problem with the gate.

No it looked like I had to go back again, DARN! But I was lucky and I found a small path through the grass and I could reach the road. I passed a restaurant and I decided to go there for a “snack” and to call a taxi when I had been at the Eider Barrage / Eider-Sperrwerk to have a look.

I crossed the road and I went up on the dyke, no birds. I walked along the dyke when I heard a bird and I went to investigate.

Turned out to be a Common Redshank standing on a rock giving alarm calls. I approached and the bird continued with the alarm call but the bird didn´t move. So I sneaked closer and closer to the bird that continued to give alarm calls.

I looked around so it didn´t looked like there was a nest close by. And in the North of Finland they have babies so I guess the nesting season should be over here down south.

But as with the Barn Swallow, maybe they are having their second brood, but no sign of any nest and I got closer. But not really close enough for a good picture, the bird took off, but landed some 15 meters further away.

So, seriously, there wasn´t much to see around the Eider Barrage / Eider-Sperrwerk. There was a lock and the gates and I spend most of the time with the Redshank. I was soon on my way back to the restaurant, Fischbistro Katinger Watt 1 where I had parked my bicycle.

Passing the restaurant and I parked my bike as I knew that I would come back. I had my lunch even though I had my picnic lunch that I bought at the cafe this morning. Still in the bags on the Kiel Canal by bike - Die Mecklenburger Radtour GmbHbike, but I will eat it in my room tonight.

I enjoyed the afternoon, and I enjoyed it extra much as I knew that there was no need to go back on the saddle today, it will be taxi for the rest of the day.

I finished my meal and I had an ice cream enjoying a gorgeous day while waiting for the taxi to come. I will be in Büsum in a jiff without having to sit on the saddle.

My plan is to bicycle back here tomorrow from Büsum. I have an extra night in Büsum and I will spend the day tomorrow coming here with the bike, and then take the taxi back again. Then I have Air conditioningcovered the whole stretch. Anyway, I got my room at Hotel Tum Stüürmann and they had AC, lovely. It was darn hot.

They also gave me a huge beer mug as I had lost my old mug that I had brought from home at Hotel Marina Plaza when they had cleaned my room, most likely thinking the beer mug was from the restaurant.

A new beer mug but no kettle, so I walked around Büsum looking for a place to buy a kettle. I walked around town and it was really crowded with tourists. I decided to take a taxi to a Supermarket out of town and after having been to a few places I found a kettle. And I bought blueberries and I was back to my hotel for a good night´s sleep.

I will take the bike back to Eider Barrage / Eider-Sperrwerk tomorrow and I will leave early, first thing after breakfast. Click HERE to find out how it went
