Sunday 12th of August 2018 and my alarm is of course going off at 4 o´clock. I make some tea and thanks to the guy at Hotel Tum Stüürmann, Büsum I have a proper tea mug. Strange, getting old and I really enjoy getting out of bed early to drink my tea. A few years ago I would not even consider going out of bed, even if they would have been shooting at me.
Anyway, I finished my tea and I will have some time to discover the area around Holiday Inn Ellesmere Port and I decided to go explore the area along the Manchester Ship Canal before my new friend come to pick me up to take me to the Hen Harrier day. Click HERE to read more about the Hen Harrier Day. This is from the BLOG “Wild about Birds” Check it out by clicking HERE
Of course, I will keep my eye open for birds while “protesting” My Guide sent me an RSPB Liverpool field checklist so I might be lucky to be able to “CROSS” some of them of my list during the day. But let’s start around the hotel.

I was a little disappointed with the Manchester Ship Canal. It was closed off so walking along the canal was for maybe 200 meter and then there was a gate. I saw Black-headed Gulls and one Cattle Egret. There were many Barn Swallows and mallards as well. I spotted one Magpie but otherwise not many exciting birds.
My new friend came to pick me up around 10 o´clock. He is a volunteer with RSBP and he will help them to prepare for the Hen Harrier Parkgate. We drove to the Parkgate Nature Reserve and there were already people when we arrived.

Can hardly see the River Dee,
but the high water can come all the way up to the picnic area
RSBP Parkgate Nature Reserve at River Dee estuary is a famous bird watching area. When the high water is coming in it pushes a lot of birds and other small mammals towards the shore and the Harriers are here to catch food. So you can come very close. But right now it is low water.
I would love to come back here at the highest high water to see the birds coming up from the mudflats down at River Dee.

We had our lunch at the pub up the road late afternoon. We walked back to Parkgate and I spotted a Robin when we walked to the car. I got a few pictures before we left for Holiday Inn Ellesmere Port. I spent the evening in my room.
We will take of to another RSBP site tomorrow to have a look for birds. My new friend will pick me up at 9 o´clock. And you just have to click HERE to find out if we find any birds.
