Birding/ Bird watching in Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir, Kuala Lumpur

Monday 26th of June 2017 and it was gorgeous weather when I arrived to Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir. It was just a few minutes ride away from Holiday Inn Express. I stepped out from the taxi and I could hear a Black-naped Oriole in the trees. I went inside the park but I had just passed the gate when I realised that the bird was in a tree outside the tree.

The bird was high up in the tree, against the sun, so the pictures won’t win any prizes. But I got the sound and if you look at the video below you will soon know how a Black-naped oriole sounds and looks like. So next time you see the bird you will know what it is.

Black-naped Oriole, Oriolus chinensis, นกขมิ้นท้ายทอยดำ

I saw the Black-naped Oriole at the Kuala Lumpur TV tower as well. But then it sounded different, like a cay. Well, almost like a cat. But the birds have different sounds, call, song, warning etc. I still investigate the Asian Koel from yesterday and I can't wait to get to Genting Highlands to meet my birding guide.

Maybe he can straight out the question mark about the Asian Koel sound. I left the Black-naped Oriole and I stepped inside the park again. And there was 2 Asian Koels in the first tree, and they made the same sound as yesterday. I could see the birds and it was two male Asian Koels. So now I know it is not a breeding sound. And the birds were fighting so, well, I don't know. But in the video below you can hear them.

At the end of the video, taken at the other side of the lake we can hear the normal Asian Koel call. Video taken with my phone as it is easier than with the Canon. I need plenty practice to take video with that camera. Maybe I should start to carry around my tripod?

Strange, just a few months ago I thought the idea of having a video camera in my camera a stupid idea. Now I can't wait to get better operating the video function. Well, last birding in Kuala Lumpur for this time in Malaysia and Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir turns in to be a favourite just after a few minutes. Birds everywhere. Asian Koles was left behind and I was soon running in to a heron looking for fish in the lake.

Porky was really in a stealth mode and I managed to sneak all the way up to the otherwise very scared Little Heron that we have seen in Thailand. So I got a lot of pictures and some of them was very good, at least to my standard.

Coming to the dead end and I have to turn around and go back again

I walk back to the gate and then I walk along the north side of the park. There were birds everywhere, but I never managed to get any pictures of the sunbirds in the fruit tree at the dead end. I ran in to another Black-naped Oriole in the NE corner of the park. No picture. There was also Yellow-vented Bulbuls in the trees.

There have not been time to relax, even for a second since I arrived here. So many birds flying around and it was very fun and the time passed very quickly. There are plenty places to sit down looking at the birds and many of the places have roof, which will come in handy if it starts to rain.

Walking south on the east side and I ran in to more fruit trees. The trees were full of Sunbirds, Ioras and Asian Glossy Starlings. Those are the birds I recognised and there are more birds eating of the small fruits/ berries, but I wasn't able to identify the birds.

I reached the south side of the park and I heard the most beautiful song. I recognised the sound as I had heard it before. But what bird was it. I sat down and I recorded the sound on my mobile phone video. So yes, the quality leaves a lot to wish for. I was sitting there waiting for the bird to come out

Boom, the bird come out and sit in front of me. It was a Common Iora and I got my pictures. Mother ducking.... S**T!!!

Talk about overexposure, I'm coming from the dark under the trees and BOOM! The bird sit down in the sunshine. Typical Porky! Getting excited and forget all about the camera settings. But thanks to Photoshop I managed to get, not a good picture out of it, but it is OK!

There were many Pacific Swallows in the park

I continued my walk along the lake in Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir and when I came to the dead end I saw herons in the trees between the two ends. It also looked like they have a place where you can rent a small rowing boat. I turned around and started to walk back looking for a gate to get out of the park. The sky was black and it would soon start to rain. No gates to leave the park until I reached the parking space on the south side of the lake.

Donald Duck and his friends

I left the park but was soon realising that here would not be any taxi. I went back in to the park and I walked to the hole in the fence in the NE corner. It was pouring down by the time I reached the hole in the fence and I was seeking refugee under a roof together with some children. No sight of any taxi and I decided to try UBER.

I booked a car and it would be here in 4 minutes. Then it said 15 minutes and then 22 minutes. Suddenly: Your car have arrived and a few seconds later 4 minutes again. When the car arrived he was about to pass me and I had to shout at the car. The driver looked at me and he stopped. We were soon on our way back to Kuala Lumpur city centre. Not to my oatmeal at Holiday Inn Express. But to the Italian restaurant for more avocado and smoked salmon.

My diet ran in to yet another epic set-back at the Italian restaurant, all the ducking oatmeal in my hotel room and here I am at a restaurant. The second today! But I walked back to the hotel and I stopped at a ATM and when I left the bank I could not close my valet as they only had 50 Ringit bills in the ATM. I was not happy.

Back at my room and I checked today’s videos and pictures, enjoying some tea before I packed my bag. We will leave Kuala Lumpur at 6 o'clock tomorrow morning. So there is never time for any long sleep in the mornings. The alarm goes off at 5 o'clock every day.

So, time to leave for a “cross” Malaysia road trip in a taxi. I look forward to it and it will be fun to see the Malaysian country side. You just need to click HERE to see how this turned out.
