Day 14: Ranthambhore

Today morning take Jungle Safari by open Canter accompanied by an expert naturalist to explore The Ranthambhore wildlife Sanctuary, one of the best places in India to see a tiger in its natural habitat. In the dry season tigers can be seen near the watering holes and are clearly visible in the dry forest. Return to the hotel for a lunch. Later visit Ranthambhore Fort overlooking the National Park and Jogi Mahal. Also visit the famous Temple of Ganesha in the Fort. Rest of the evening free for leisure activities at the jungle resort. Overnight at jungle resort.

Monday 18th of January 2016 and I was out of bed to turn off my alarm at 6 thirty. At quarter to 7 they called and told me that my car was here.
- What!!?? I was told 7!

I was in the car at 7 sitting with the driver where we had heating. It was darn cold and the blanket didn't helped much. So I will sit up front until we reach the gate where I will swap seat Tiger safari in Ranthambhore National Park/ Tiger Reservewith the Guide sitting in the back.

We drove up to where we had been yesterday but now we passed through the gate to ZONE 1

The Guide went to register us and I took the opportunity to get out to take a few pictures of all the Rufous treepie flying around. And they were not shy flying in to the passengers in the jeeps looking for food. I had seen 3 of them in Gir but here they were like pigeons at any town square. The Rufous treepie and the Jungle Babbler is like flying rats here, there are so Tiger safari in Ranthambhore National Park/ Tiger Reservemany of them.

I told the river to drive slowly, it is not a formula one race. He said OK but when they came back after registering us he told me that they had spotted a tiger.

He asked if he could drive quickly so we could see the tiger.

I said OK and off we went. We were soon on our way and below you can see some of the pictures I took during the morning safari in ZONE 1 in Ranthambhore National Park. Hold on! He will drive fast to get to the tiger!

Early morning at a beautiful lake

We flew through the park and I missed many photo opportunities as the park was beautiful in the morning fog. But if there was a tiger we wanted to see it. We drove by a few Jackals and we stopped at a beautiful lake.

They turned off the engine and I asked where the tiger was.
- He is at the other side of the park
- So what are we doing here?
- It is a beautiful lake
- Yes it is, but you said you needed to drive fast to see the tiger
- We only see tigers if we're lucky
- So why did we drive fast?

I got really angry, lying and I pay big money to come here and now I missed several beautiful sight just because we were going in a formula one speed, and it is not comfortable to drive fast one the dust tracks.
- We thought you liked to see the lake
- YOU DUCKING TWAT!! Don't you ducking lie to me you duck!

They apologised and we left and now we were driving slowly so I could enjoy the sights and to take pictures. And now the safari turned in to a pleasure driving along the lake in slow speed. I asked them to stop every now and then so I could take pictures.

It was a very beautiful park and even though it was cold I enjoyed the morning. A little foggy so the landscape was beautiful even though it was hard to take pictures.

We see a second tiger and then we see the first tiger again walking towards the other tiger. When we saw the first tiger this morning the tiger was licking his wounds from a fight they had have earlier this morning. The Guide told me that the Park Rangers had seen the tigers fighting early morning.

So maybe they are looking for each other again to continue the fight. It is the breeding period for the tigers now. But I don't know if it is two males or two females, not easy to see.

The easiest way to see the difference is the foot print, round toes is a male and the female have pointy toes. Toes, maybe more correct to say paws, but I think the paw is the whole “foot”

Time had passed quickly and it was time to go back and we continued around the big lake and I asked them to stop several times to take pictures of beautiful birds.

Among others I have used Peter Ericsson's web page Birds of Thailand These galleries contain 668 species of the Birds of Thailand and have been of a great help to identify some of the birds as the birds in Thailand and India are, well, many of them are the same.

I have had most help from my friend, the bird pal I met at Suan Rot Fai. Sending pictures of birds I have not been able to identify to him via Line. 3 minutes later he and he have managed to identify most of the birds I have had problems with. THANKS! Visit his web page m☥lever for his beautiful pictures.

And my new aid, maybe, and I say maybe the best aid. I brought my mobile phone as my SIM card have stopped working and I tried to get it to work again so I can use the internet. Thus I had my phone in my pocket on my first game drive in Jim Corbett National Park.

We saw a bird and I asked my Guide and the driver if they had a pen and a paper as I had forgot my pen and paper in my room. I remembered my LG phone and I recorded the name. And thus I will always bring my phone. Writing the name in the car and I have found more than once that it can be hard to read what I had wrote when I'm back in my room.

So now I always have my mobile in my pocket and it has been a great help.

Of course, all bird pictures available on my Indian

Of course, I have seen many many more, but this list is for birds I managed to get on picture

Some of the pictures are OK, and some of them are straight up in a very poor quality

We saw a baby crocodile in the pond, so totally 11 crocodiles today. There was also the Little Cormorant but no signs of the snakes so they might be out for lunch. Well, anyway, it had been a Safari jeep at Abrar Palacewonderful morning except for the formula 1 race in the beginning. We drove back to the hotel.

Back at the hotel and I had a breakfast/ lunch. Toast and tea. I spent the time in cabin until 13:45 when they are coming to pick me up for the afternoon safari at Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve.

No sign of any jeep at 13:45. I was told that pick up times were 07:00 and 14:00 when I checked in. But this morning the jeep was here at 06:46 and they told me pick-up time was 06:45 and 13:45. Obviously these guys didn't knew what they were talking about.

We took off towards the Sherpur Gate a few minutes away and we will soon be in the Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve. This time we will explore ZONE 3 and I'm looking forward to it. And below we can find some of the pictures from the afternoon safari.

ZONE 3 was not very exciting and the dirt track was terrible and I didn't see anything, well, except a very beautiful nature. ZONE 3 is beautiful, but no animals or birds. At least not until we passed a very small pond.

I spotted a Grey Heron, a Painted Stork and 4 Pond Herons. We spent most of the time here as I really liked to watch the Painted Stork. And I was waiting for the Painted stork to catch a fish. And when he caught a fish it went quick and it was hard to get a picture. Yes, I need training to take pictures of birds.

I was happy when we left ZONE 3 even though I had enjoyed the birds on the safari. But the dirt track was terrible and I had a soar behind. I had pasta for dinner and it was very good, even though it was a wee bit spicy. The evening was spent in my room looking at pictures and looking for bird names on the internet.

And as every night, I'm in bed around 10 or 11 for some sleep so I'm full of vim when they call me early morning. And I'm looking forward to tomorrow's safaris.

Will we see any tigers tomorrow? Just click HERE to find out!
