Krapperup castle is one of the oldest castle in Sweden. It was mentioned on the 9th century. Back in the days Krapperup was owned by Mr. Kjeld. He had blood from ancient kings

from Skåne in his veins. He passed on the family Krognos family weapon, the black eagle wing.

Krapperup castle was owned by the Krognos for many years but in 1540 the Podebusk family became the owner of Krapperup castle. When Claus Podebusk took over after his father 1593 he had 1800 farms. He also had the manors at Barsebäck, Karsholm and Markie in Skåne.

He also owned manors in Denmark and Rügen, Germany. But he was the last in the family Podebusk with any importance.

Today's castle was built 1570 by Mourids Clausen Podebusk. When Podebusk took over Krapperup after Krognos they teared down the old castle. He built the moat around the castle and the main building had an octagonal shaped defence tower. His son's daughter got married to Henrik Gyldenstierne.

Henrik Gyldenstierne decorated Krapperup with 7 pointed white stars around the windows and the walls facing west. These 7 pointed stars is the old family weapon of Gyldenstierne.

When Skåne became Swedish the Krapperup and many other manors in Skåne came in to the hands of the Swedish nobles. Henrik Rantzau sold Krapperup 1667 to Miss Marie Sofie De la Gardie, doughter to Jacob De la Gardie.

When she took over Krapperup it was the first time the

She was a very enterprising and gifted woman and was running a few industries. She also got the lucrative right to keep the fire at Kullen lighthouse to Krapperup.

During the time Marie Sofie De la Gardies owned Krapperup she renovated the main building and

built new wings to the castle. Now Krapperup became a baroque castle with a hipped roof on the main building.

On the drawing on the right hand side we can see the octagonal shaped defence towers. We also see that the castle have 3 floors.

King Karl XI lived a few months on Krapperup during the war against Denmark. All the wars with Denmark was nothing but hardships and economical struggle. Marie Sofie De la Gardie died penniless 1694 and her 2 daughters and sons in law inherited Krapperup.

They sold Krapperup 1702 to Henrik Jacob Hildebrand.

Krapperup’s principal appearance today originates from 1750-60 when Petter Gotthard von Kochen renovated Krapperup.

Gyllenstierna's family weapon1809 Krapperup came back to the family Gyllenstierna possession, they put the 7 pointed star in to the building. The 7 pointed star was Gyllenstierna's family weapon in Denmark and Sweden.

They also demolished the towers and removed the third floor from the building. On the pictures below we can see the 7 pointed star in the main building.

The Krapperup Estate

The Krapperup Estate

The Krapperup estate dates from medieval times, but the existing manor, except the wings, is from the 16th century. When the Podebusk family built the castle, Skåne was still part of Denmark. The seven-pointed star, which is Gyldenstierne’s coat-of-arms, was added to the facades at the beginning of the 1600s. Denmark lost Skåne to Sweden in 1658, with Krapperup’s first Swedish owner being Maria Sophia de la Gardie. In the 1700s, the Hildebrands and then the von Kochen family owned the estate, and it was finally inherited by the Gyllenstierna family, with the seven-pointed star, in the 19th century.

The state rooms, with their Victorian interiors, are all situated in the main building, leaving the wings for the family’s private apartments. The gardens, covering about 80 acres, developed during the 19th century from their previous formal and utilitarian design into the present romantic layout with winding paths, carp ponds, an abundance of rhododendrons and an attractive rose garden.

The former estate in tail of Krapperup was converted into a foundation in 1967. This was with the aim of preserving the castle and the gardens in their surrounding rural landscape. The estate continues to be run as before by the family, with a well-functioning agricultural holding of about 5,000 acres.

The old farm buildings around the former stable yard now house a museum and art gallery, a music hall and a small café and shop for visitors. The manor is open for pre-booked visits only, but the gardens are accessible throughout the whole year.

The Krapperup foundation supports scientific research within the region and has certain humanitarian undertakings, with several grants being awarded annually.
