Aladdin's adventure on board M/T Rosa Mærsk/ Rosa Maersk

Sunday 9th of July 2017 and I had been told that the discharging is stopped due to an electrical problem at the refinery. And no one knows when they are going to start again. Good, I hope we stay here for a few days so I can go ashore to buy a new camera. No need to buy Pepsi MAX.

Captain came out on deck to meet me, he told me that he had 5 cases on board and he brought a case of MAX to the CCR first thing. We enjoyed a few cans while talking about the good ol' days.

I was in bed before 9 o'clock and I felt asleep instantly

+++++++++++++++
Monday 10th of July 2017
and I had been sleeping NON-STOP until 6 thirty. So I had time for two quick Diet MAX before going down to the CCR. I was surprised to see that we had completed discharging. So they had obviously got the electrical problem to disappear during the night. I was in the CCR when we left for the anchorage to take bunker.

As I'm new on board I need to familiarize myself with the paperwork etc. And I did a tank cleaning plan and we can Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st hopefully finish the tank cleaning tonight.

We left Tenerife anchorage around 5 o'clock or so and we started the tank cleaning after dinner. We manages to complete the washing and the ventilation and purging will be running all night long so we will get started tomorrow morning with the stripping and blowing of lines. And if the force ventilation is completed by tomorrow, earliest late afternoon we can get started with the mopping of the tanks.

+++++++++++++++
Tuesday 11th of July 2017
and we attended our cargo tanks all day long, and yet again, almost 10 o'clock in the evening before I could retire to my cabin for a MAX and some relaxation. And again, I get by, by thinking about the humpback whales on Tonga.

+++++++++++++++
Wednesday 12th of July 2017
and I woke up in the middle of the night, freezing like I had never been freezing before. Stomach pain and I was really bad. I hardly made it out of bed and coming to the CCR was not making me feel any better. But we have plenty stuff to do so no time to be sick. We will discharge the SLOP through the ODME and it was a few hours of preparation.

Work permits, risk assessments and plans and checklists before we could start discharging through the ODME. So it was after lunch when we could finally start discharging.

We also did some cargo calculations and I hope we get this voyage, load full cargo of gasoil somewhere in Italy on the 19th. I was feeling a wee bit better in the late afternoon, but I retired to my cabin when we were ready with the ODME and I hope I feel good tomorrow again.

+++++++++++++++
Thursday 13th of July 2017
and we held our monthly drills after the coffee break. Well, coffee break for those whit time to have a coffee break. C/O is for sure not one of them. And the crew continued to mop the tanks in the afternoon. We got the loading in Sarroch, Italy confirmed.

Maybe the last trip before signing off, we will change to UK flag in August. Then they will as well change name of the ship. New name will be Maersk Rayleigh and they will change to UK crew. Might be the same C/O coming back that left in Tenerife.

+++++++++++++++
Friday 14th of July 2017
and I had been awake the whole night, sick like never before. I had heard the horn so I guessed it was foggy. And I got it confirmed when I came to the CCR at 8 o'clock. Well, it was way passed 8 when I finally made it down to the CCR. I was not feeling well. But we will have to mop the last cargo tanks before we can start the IG purging.

And we had to go through the risk assessments, tool box meeting. Work permits and test and calibration of the gas detectors. So it was 9 o'clock something before we were down in the first tank. Of course, we had to measure the gas before entering the tank. My plan was to go back to Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stbed when we were ready, but we were soon running in to more jobs and it was 7 thirty in the evening before I was back in my cabin with fever.

Saturday 15th of July 2017
and we put the last hand on the tank cleaning and IG purging today. And we had the opportunity to close a few jobs that had turned red in the computer based maintenance program. So all in all it had been a good day, especially since I fell a lot better.

Back in my cabin and there was an email regarding my humpback swim. The Preparing For Tonga 2017 pdf file and I studied the file. And this is what keeps me going on board, thinking about future and past adventures.

This is what I'm thinking about while on board, makes it easier to stay on board thinking about what will come. OK, how many times do you think I imagined these pictures sitting on the flight flying half way around the world in a very uncomfortable seat? Many many times and it became a wee bit easier to survive the flight.

+++++++++++++++
Sunday 16th of July 2017
and today I could concentrate fully on preparing the loading plan for Sarroch in Italy. Deck is ready and I had the crew to work on maintenance jobs that had turned red and at the end of the day the records looked pretty good.

+++++++++++++++
Monday 17th of July 2017
and were steaming slowly towards Sarroch, Italy. Arrival early tomorrow morning, but no berthing prospects. But it looks like we will get provisions and stores on the roads tomorrow afternoon.

+++++++++++++++
Tuesday 18th of July 2017
and we had just anchored on the roads of Sarroch when I came down to the CCR 5 minutes before 8 o'clock. The crew came a few minutes later and we could get going Aladdin's adventure on board M/T Rosa Mærsk/ Rosa Maerskwith our good morning and tool box meeting.

Still no berthing prospects but we started to prepare for the arrival. But suddenly we had a boat alongside and they were here to pick up our garbage.

Good, now we are rid of the garbage before coming alongside when we have enough of things to do. And we expect to get the stores and provision in the afternoon so this will be finished as well.

We finished the garbage and now it looks like we will go alongside at midnight so I sent the crew to rest after lunch. By then we had completed the pre arrival tests and checks. So if I'm lucky I Aladdin's adventure on board M/T Rosa Mærsk/ Rosa Maerskcan get some sleep in the afternoon as I expect it to be a long night.

Lo and behold, I managed to sleep until 6 o'clock in the evening. I went for a cup of tea and a late Nutelladinner. Topping up the dinner with 2 buns covered in Nutella. Just what I needed.

Agony and pain, my diet had been rolling on like a steamer back home. Well, the steamer crashed about 2 hours after joining Rosa Mærsk in Tenerife.

Finishing my meal and I went straight to the CCR to print a diet bet to put in the CCR. From now on it will be expensive to eat. I put up my diet bet on the bulkhead in the mess room and it was soon the center of the attention. People flocking around hoping to make a lot of money. Well, I hope they get nothing and that I will get a V-shaped torso.

Wednesday 19th of July 2017
and we had first line ashore 15 minutes after midnight. We started to load just after 4 o'clock and I was in bed trying to sleep at 8 o'clock. I was unable to fall asleep, just tossin' and turnin’ and I gave up 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

We got 3 discharge ports and 5 different terminals in Lebanon confirmed in the afternoon.
First: JIEH PORT
Second: BEIRUT
Third: AMCHIT

+++++++++++++++
Thursday 20th of July 2017
and we started to top up our tanks to 97.8% at 02:00 and we completed loading at 06:12. And we left the jetty at 10:24, but not for Lebanon and Beirut. We have to drop the anchor to wait for the cargo documents. When I came on the bridge watch at 16 hundred we were steaming towards SE and Sicily.

I had the AB to bring the two cases of MAX that we got here in Italy. Tasted much better than the MAX from Turkey they had on board when I joined

+++++++++++++++
Friday 21th of July 2017
and we were steaming on and easterly course south of Sicily when I came on the bridge at 4 o'clock in the morning. A gorgeous morning, we had quite a few fishing vessels around us, but I was enjoying my tea. Time turned quick and it was soon 8 o'clock.

We will inspect the FP tank today and we were in the CCR holding a tool box meeting when the Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stChief Engineer and 4th Engineer came by. They asked about the good morning gymnastics and we got right on to a session of huffin' and puffin'

Our Engineers left and we continued with the tool box meeting. We had received stores in Sarroch so our crew had to attend to some of it before our Pump Man and I went down the FP at 9 thirty. The tank looks very good. Only damages to the coating at some of the edges. Of course, the paint is soon 15 years old so some discolorations. But no corrosion.

As you can see on the pictures, our EX camera isn't much of a help recording things. We finished the tank and we returned up on deck and the waiting paper work. I will kill time with this until it is time to eat lunch. Of course, there are other paper work to update, oil record books, sample receipt etc. So it is not like we're running out of work just because it is time for lunch.

I had a gorgeous afternoon on the bridge. The weather cannot be much better and time turned quickly enjoying my tea. And tomorrow we will do it all over again, but it is ballast tank 6 port we will inspect. And as it is Saturday I look forward to have the chicken & macaroni soup they had for dinner today. Friday and I'm not allowed to eat the soup, but tomorrow...

+++++++++++++++
Saturday 22nd of July 2017
and we finished the inspection of ballast tank 6 Port. I had a shower Rosa Maerskand our Cook had the chicken & macaroni soup ready for me when I was back from my shower. And I was hungry.

It was a wee bit more than I had expected, but we leave nothing behind. Of course, I was full when it was time for lunch so I didn't have much for lunch. So my diet didn't suffer all that much. And I will only have oatmeal and bananas on the bridge for dinner tonight.

+++++++++++++++
Sunday 23rd of July 2017
and we were South of Crete when I came on my watch 20 minutes after 4 o'clock in the morning. Ships clock had been advanced by one hour during the night so it was actually only 20 past 3 in the morning.

The sun was soon coming up over Crete and we enjoyed the sun rise while drinking tea. Turned out to be another gorgeous morning even though the wind was a bit strong coming from the North.

Steaming towards Lebanon

+++++++++++++++
Monday 24th of July 2017
and we're approaching Cyprus when I come on the bridge 4 o'clock in the morning. Beautiful weather and no ships around us. Well, a car carrier behind us steaming towards south and the Suez Canal.

Time turned kind of quickly and a few mugs of tea later it was time to go to the CCR to prepare my discharging plan. 3 different ports in Lebanon so there is a wee bit of planning to do.

Early morning on the bridge

Managed to get an hour of sleep in the afternoon and I was back on the bridge at 4 o'clock for my afternoon watch. Skipping dinner this way and I only eat fruit and oatmeal with tea.

Coming down to the CCR after my watch and I heard some “commotion” from the galley so I went to investigate. It was our Cook making bread while talking with our Mess Man.

Tuesday 25th of July 2017
and we dropped anchor at 4 thirty in the morning. Now we just have to wait for the Lebanese authorities and the Surveyors. When the sun came up I saw that it was Maersk Kalea discharging at the buoys and we would go to take her place when she is ready. They expect us to get the pilot on board at 11 o'clock. So plenty time to do sampling and ullageing when the Surveyors comes on board.

The Surveyors came on board 5 minutes before 8, they were supposed to be here at 7. We left the anchorage at 11 thirty and we were moored at 12:18. We started the discharging at 16:48 and we expect to be ready late tomorrow evening.

+++++++++++++++
Wednesday 26th of July 2017
and we completed discharging at 19:00. 6 minutes later and the terminal wanted to restart discharging. We gave them a few extra tons and we could leave at 9 o'clock in the evening. An hour to the next anchorage where we will wait for day light to come to the buoys at Zahrani Oil Installation at day light to discharge 3000 tons to HIF Terminal.

+++++++++++++++
Thursday 27th of July 2017
and they called me at 5 thirty. I was surprised, I had expected us to be on the way by then. Pilot on board at 6 and we had all fast at HIF Terminal at 07:48. We will spend the whole day discharging here. The Loading Master is the same we will have in Beirut.

He left to take a tanker with gasoline to the buoys in Beirut. Same sea berth we will use and he expect us to come alongside 10 o'clock tomorrow morning. Nice, no need to get up at 6 in the morning. But well, we will have to see tomorrow.

We left around 9 o'clock in the evening and now we have 3 more terminals here in Lebanon before we can steam back towards west again.

+++++++++++++++
Friday 28th of July 2017
and we were anchored in Beirut when I came on the bridge at 6 o’clock in the morning. Pilot expected to come on board at 11 o'clock. Good, we have time to perform all our pre arrival tests and checks before that. And maybe more important, I have time for my good morning tea.

This is our third terminal here in Lebanon and when we're finished here we have 2 more terminals to discharge at. I had a great view over Beirut from the anchorage and there was quite a few
Beirut, Paris of the Mediterraneanhigh risers being constructed in town. A shame that I cannot come ashore to have a look at the town. Paris of the Mediterranean as it was called before all hell broke loose.

Pilot was not on board until 2 o'clock and by then we had been waiting for a very long time for him to be ready on the other ship. We had all fast at Uniterminals sea berth at 14:48. 2 anchors and ropes tied up in buoys. All tanker terminals in Lebanon are sea berths and we have to use anchors and mooring ropes to the buoys, what they call spider moorings.

Loading Master and Surveyors was on board at 15:00 and we started the discharging at 18:06. We were at full discharge rate at 19:18 and our Loading Master brought me a box of Lebanese Baklava. We had talked about Baklava yesterday and I told him that the Turkish was the best and the Iranian was second best.
- No, Lebanese are the best! He said
- You're joking, I said
- I will bring tomorrow when you come to Beirut!
- Seriously, you want to take up the fight with the Turkish Baklava humiliating yourself?
- You will see

Baklava

(/ˈbɑːkləvɑː/, /bɑːkləˈvɑː/, or /bəˈklɑːvə/; Ottoman Turkish: باقلوا [bɑːklɑvɑː]) is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and sweetened and held together with syrup or honey. It is characteristic of the cuisines of the former Ottoman Empire, and is also found in Central and Southwest Asia.

Baklava

Baklava

Baklava

Although the history of baklava is not well documented, there is evidence that its current form was developed in the imperial kitchens of the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul. The Sultan presented trays of baklava to the Janissaries every 15th of the month of Ramadan in a ceremonial procession called the Baklava Alayı.

Two well-supported proposals for the pre-Ottoman roots of this Istanbul dessert are that it came from a Central Asian Turkic tradition of layered breads, or that it came from Roman placenta cake, part of the Byzantine culinary traditions of the city of Istanbul, which had been the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire.

Captain ripped open the metal box but as it is Friday I could not try until tomorrow when it is Saturday. Well, I had a sneak preview when I was back in my cabin. And yes, they were very good. Can't wait until tomorrow when it is Saturday. And our Surveyor will Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st hopefully bring me 4 kg tomorrow. Can't wait to blow myself out of all proportions.

I was back in my cabin at 8 o'clock in the evening, pretty much being up and about since 6 this very morning. So some sleep is needed. Expect to be called around 6 or so in the morning to complete this parcel. And from there we're facing another full day again.

+++++++++++++++
Saturday 29th of July 2017
and we left Uniterminal just after 8 o'clock shifting to the MPC Terminal where we had all fast at 10 forty two. We will discharge 4200 MT, but they only have a 8" hose and a maximum rate of 450m3/h. So it will be a long discharging here. And to make it worse, they have a new shore tank so we had to pump with maximum 1 Bar pressure for 2 hours before we could increase to a whopping 5 Bars.

+++++++++++++++
Sunday 30th of July 2017
and I had been up since 2 when we completed discharging at 03:24. One hour stoppage between 2 and 3. Now we only have one more terminal to go before we can leave Lebanon. Pilot is booked for 7 so we can leave the MPC Terminal here in Beirut. Of course, there was an e-mail saying that the Pilot would board at completion.

And as no surprise it was later on set to 7 to 7 thirty, and, well, it really means duck all. We left just after 8 o'clock and we picked up the pilot at Amchit 10 o'clock and we had all fast at Universal GAS 30 minutes later. Spider mooring and buoys. We started discharging at 12:12 and we completed discharging at 15:30 and it was really nice when we left Lebanon behind.

+++++++++++++++
Monday 31st of July 2017
and we were steaming west in the Mediterranean. South of Cyprus when I came on the bridge 4 o'clock in the morning. The crew will have a rest today after a hectic week in Lebanon with not much sleep.

Well, the month of July came to an end on a gorgeous day. One cargo calculation, full gargo of Gas oil, but nothing dure yet. But I know that we will start the month of August by washing slop tank STB. Just need to click HERE to find out how that turns out.
