Birding/ Bird watching in Singapore

Birding/ Bird watching in Singapore

Sunday 2nd of September 2018 and I was at the Swan Lake looking for the Blue-eared Kingfisher before 7 o'clock in the morning. A few other bird watchers came to have a look for the bird, among them my new friend that I meet here last Friday.

I took the opportunity to take some pictures of the swans as I will learn how to see the difference between the male and female. Males are larger than females and have a larger knob on their bill. So I will study the pictures when I have the time and you will soon learn how to tell the difference. I also managed to get pictures and also a recording with my ZOOM H5 Handy Recorder

Female swan swimming back and forth at the tree line. Around 2 meter and she turned around again looking in to the vegetation all the time giving this sound.

She did this for 2 hours, maybe longer while we were waiting for a Blue-eared Kingfisher to show up at the Swan Lake and she was still swimming there when I gave up on the Kingfisher

I got the see a new bird, the Yellow Bittern before I left to look for the blue-eared Kingfisher at the Symphony Lake. Sunday and they prepare the Shaw Symphony Stage for a concert and it was sound checking. So I had not much hope to see the Blue-eared Kingfisher.

Suddenly we had some noisy thunder and lightning. People told me that it would start to pour down any minute and Botanical Garden was empty in a jiff. The whole place turned in to a ghost like place and I was the only one left in the park.

I took a taxi back to Bliss Hotel, I had only got 2 hours in the park and I killed a few hours in my room before I crossed the street to the China Town Point and the Japanese restaurant to have my lunch. I love the noodle soup they serve and so far this is the only place I have been eating at this time in Singapore.

And I will most likely only be eating here next time in Singapore. I took a taxi and I was back in the Botanical Garden around 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I walked from the Tanglin Gate, SE corner of the Botanical Garden. Walking by the Swan Lake and I kept my eyes out for the White-bellied Eagle and the Grey-headed Fish Eagle, but no sign of any of the eagles.

I walk by the place where the Blue-eared Kingfisher had been seen. They had spotted the Kingfisher this morning. I hanged around for a while before I continued to the Symphony Lake. Walking along and I was joined by a girl. She was here to look for Otters and she showed me a video she had taken of 3 Otters this morning.

I see the White-throated Kingfisher at the Symphony Lake and now the bird is sitting in a tree at the north end of the Symphony Lake. I see two Oriental Pied Hornbills flying over the lake, but no sign of the Blue-eared Kingfisher. The weather is good so there is music from the Shaw Symphony Stage. I walk back to the Swan Lake and I pass a group of Asian Glossy Starlings.

Walking to the Swan Lake and I see a group of White-crested Laughingthrushes playing around in the dry leafs at the lawn. I approached the birds slowly trying to sneak up on the birds. I discover a group of bird watchers sneaking up on the birds from the other side. They scared away the birds before I got any good pictures.

Waterhen is feeding on the lawn at the Swan Lake

The White-crested Laughingthrushes were scared away and I crossed the lawn to the Swan Lake to see if they had seen the Blue-eared Kingfisher. There was a White-breasted Waterhen feeding on the lawn so I stopped to make a video.

They had seen the Blue-eared Kingfisher 20 minutes ago, but the bird took off again and I missed it. I decided to call it a day and I walked back towards the Tangling Gate along the Swan Lake. No signs of any of the eagles. I walked across the small fish pond with the water fall at the Tangling Gate and I was surprised, a Striated Heron was fishing there. And the bird was not scared for the people walking across the pond to and from the Botanical Garden

There was an opportunity to practice my video skills yet another time. I made a video of the Striated Heron and the White-breasted Waterhen having it's afternoon shower/ clean up.

The sell fish food and some children were feeding the fishes. Then I got to see something I never seen before. The heron took some fish food using it as bait. I saw the fish taking the bait in front of the heron two times, but these fishes were too big for the heron. What a beautiful afternoon this turned out to be!

I was waiting for my GRAB when 2 bird watchers came. The recognised me from the park and we started to talk. I showed them the video of the Striated Heron fishing. Nice guys and we were chatting about birding, but my taxi came and I had to go back to my hotel. And I had decided to come back here tomorrow morning again after the experience with the heron.

I will make a quick birding through Botanical Gardens before going to the airport and fly back home. Click HERE to find out if I see any birds.
