Birding/ Bird watching in Singapore

Birding/ Bird watching in Singapore

Friday 31st of August 2018 and took me about 30 minutes to get back to the hotel and I changed my room. I had told them yesterday that I could keep the room with 2 small beds, but they were fully booked so I moved to a room with a big bed. A great move! The room was much bigger, same price. So I was very happy changing room.

I booked through the hotels web page, first night was booked via hotel.com, my last booking through that place, well, I have 3 free nights that I will use. But after that never again.

Only spam and scams coming in my e-mail in box from hotel.com. So when I have booked my three free nights I will block their address.

I book a taxi with GRAB and I take off to the Botanical Garden. It had just stopped to rain when I left my hotel and I have luck, no rain during my stay in the Botanical Garden. I walk from the gate passed the Swan Lake and I end up at the Shaw Symphony Stage.

I have seen the Jungle Fowl in the Botanical Garden before, but today there were plenty of them, all over the place. I walk pass the Shaw Symphony Stage and I see a group of birders setting up their equipment pointing towards the arrow in the pond.

They are obviously waiting for the White-throated Kingfisher, the very same Kingfisher I spotted last time here. Click HERE for pictures from that time.

Waiting for the Kingfisher

I walk past a guy and he tells me that he met me at the wetlands this morning. We had met on the bridge and we were talking. He gave me a few pointers and there are two places here in the Botanical Garden where there is a Blue-eared Kingfisher. And on of the places is here at the Symphony Lake.

We talk for a while and he is on his way in his direction and I continue. I go look for the Common Kingfisher that is sitting in the reeds most of the time. No Common Kingfisher today.I come around and I run in to an beautiful Olive-backed Sunbird eating from some red flowers.

I continue back towards the stage and I see my new friend from this morning. He and one more bird watcher are taking pictures of an female Olive-backed Sunbird eating from the flowers.

I go to join them and the birds are really not scared and I can come very close to the birds and I manage to get some good pictures that I´m very happy with.

And yes, I know, I need more practice with my video camera. But it is already better than when I bought it 1 week ago

I decided to try to make a video of the sunbird feeding on the flowers. There was a Red-legged crake coming out from the flowers and the bird was running around my feet. I was busy with the video and I thought “for sure” I will get another chance with the Red-legged crake.

I chased the Red-legged crake but I never got any pictures. But I got a few pictures of a Night Heron sleeping in the bushes around the Shaw Symphony Stage. The bird was covered with some leafs so it won’t make it to my list of observed birds.

I was very happy with my day when I booked a GRAB taxi to go back to my hotel. The GRAB taxi arrived after a few minutes and I asked the driver to stop at the shopping mall next to the hotel. I was hungry and I wanted to visit the Japanese restaurant I had been to yesterday.

They recognised me and they gave me the same food as I had have yesterday, YUMMY!!!! And the food was excellent today again and I was full when I left the restaurant.

Back in my room and I was soon in bed with my alarm set to go off just after 4 o´clock. I will go to the Mount Faber Park to start my hike over the Southern Ridges. You just click HERE to find out if I find any birds during my hikes across the Southern Ridges.
