Birding/ Bird watching in Bangkok

Sunday 10th of July 2016 and I finally made it to Suan Rot Fai for some afternoon birding. The first thing I noticed when walking around is that the lawns are wet and muddy, yeah, rainy season. Everything is much greener and the vegetation is much denser than back in January.

Benjathas Park (Suan Rot Fai)

previously used as a golf course for The State Railway of Thailand (SRT). Now, it is a park for recreation and fitness center for the general public and people in the neighbourhood.

From Bangkok Post

I walked towards the first pond after the lake. No Asian Openbills at the lake and I could not hear any Coppersmith Barbets. So it is a different season. Anyway, back in January I could see the water in the pond from quite far away. But today I could not see the water until I was all the way up to the pond thanks to the dense vegetation. No storks, Bee eaters or Kingfishers. I saw an Indian Roller and a lot of crows.

And no Egrets on the grass, but a lot of Common Mynas and Pied Mynas (Asian Pied Starling) I saw a small bird that I had not manage to identify yet. After having spent time on the internet, among the places I visited was Peter Ericsson's web page Birds of Thailand These galleries contain 668 species of the Birds of Thailand and have been of a great help to identify some of the birds I have seen. I consulted my book: Craig Robson's "A Field Guide to the Birds of Thailand" but I came up with nothing.

Took me a day and I consulted my own old bird pictures. I had seen the Brown Prinia and they looked much the same. And I was looking at Prinias and I'm 99.9% sure it is a Plain Prinia

No more Cattle Egrets in the grass, but many Pied Mynas (Asian Pied Starling), Gracupica contra, นกอีแจว

I walked from the pond towards the Kingfisher pond and I passed the butterfly house I saw a very strange looking bird. I was soon to realise that it was a bald Common Myna, never seen before and when I was back home I checked the internet for information. But there wasn't really and answer to why the Common Mynas turned bald. Some suggestions were lack of vitamins, fighting, mites and stuff like that.

Approaching the Kingfisher pond and I could see that they had been building new walk paths in the park. But I was shocked to see that they had built a walking path across the Kingfisher pond.

I was sneaking up to the Kingfisher pond on our usual path through the trees in order not to scare the birds. Dense vegetation and I could not see the pond for all the vegetation in the pond. But Birding/ Bird watching in BangkokI was soon to discover a ugly concrete bridge and I guess that we will never see any Kingfishers here again.

What if they would have had spent the money on cleaning up this beautiful park instead. This was a huge disappointment.

I went to check out the Spotted Owlet tree and I passed some Common Mynas on the way. And I saw my second Common Myna starting to get bold. Maybe it is because of the time of the year. I have seen many Common Mynas but now it seems like they are all going bald.

I didn't see the Spotted Owlet even though I searched every tree. So I started to walk back along the small ponds. There were a group of Thai birders at one of the ponds so I went to check out what they were looking at. But they were packing up for the day preparing to go back home. Of course, I could not help but notice that they took their garbage to the garbage bin. Exactly the spirit we're looking for.

I was following an Indian Roller and I ran in to a group of girls that wanted me to take their picture. But I told them that I would be back as soon as I had got the pictures of the Indian Rollers sitting ina tree on the other side of the pond.

I called over the girls to have a look at the Indian Rollers sitting in the tree. A few of the Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stinternationally recognised sign for “Quiet, beautiful birds in the tree” and they came sneaking over.

But they were not impressed by the birds. I got my pictures and then I took their pictures before going to the Asian Openbill just behind them. The stork was fishing for snails in the pond. This was the second stork I had seen today so I guess they have moved during the rainy season.

I walked back to the entrance to get a taxi back home. I passed a group of Scaly-brested Munias eating on the lawn. My last pictures before going back home.

and I managed to identify the Plain Prinia I saw yesterday. I got hold up with this and I had to go to buy fresh fruit. So it was kind of late in the afternoon and I decided to go to Lumpini Park instead of the Suan Luang Rama IX. Suan Luang Rama IX is far away and my plan is to go early tomorrow morning.

Lumpini Park

Lumphini Park (also Lumpini or Lumpinee, Thai: สวนลุมพินี) is a 360 rai (57.6-hectare (142-acre)) park in Bangkok, Thailand. The park offers rare open public space, trees, and playgrounds in the Thai capital and contains an artificial lake where visitors can rent boats. Paths around the park totalling approximately 2.5 km in length are a popular area for evening joggers. Officially, cycling is only permitted during the day between the times of 10:00 to 15:00. There is a smoking ban throughout the park. Dogs are not allowed.

From Wikipedia

Anyway, Lumpini park, don't seem so very exciting. But I had just been in the park for a very few minutes, entering from Wittayu Road when I spotted a Little Heron fishing in the small fosse.

I continued in to the park. I have walked through the park many times, but this time I turned left and I came to an area I had never been to before. I saw a bird on the ground that I had never seen before. Well, when I came back home I discovered that I had already seen the bird in Suan Rot Fai last winter. It was the Black-collared Starling.

I continued in to the park and I could hear a lot of birds but they were very hard to see in the dark green leafs. It also makes it very dark and hard to take pictures. But there are other wild life in the Lumpini Park as well.

I could hear the Coppersmith Barbet and I saw three of them sitting in a top of a tree, but too far away for any pictures. I could hear the Asina Koel but I never saw the bird.

I had been walking around the park and I had seen one Little Egret but when I crossed a bridge I could see some white birds in the trees and I went to check it out. Turned out that the tree was full off Little Egret babies. Of course, it was hard to get any good pictures from the shore side under the trees.

A couple walked by and they came up to see what I was looking at. They suggested one of the rented paddle boats. Yes, I would get an excellent view from the sea side. But as I'm 4 times bigger that the boat it would have been an embarrassment to tramp around in one of those.

I continued towards the same gate I had entered the park at. Almost two and a half hour waking around and I wanted to get back home for some fruit salad and tea. I passed a Javan Pond Heron and one more of the Little Herons fishing.

So Lumpini Park is definitely a place I will come back to for some birding

and my alarm clock went of at 5 o'clock. I was in a taxi just after 6 o'clock and we took off towards Suan Luang Rama IX. We made it to Suan Luang Rama IX in record breaking time, the roads out from Bangkok was almost empty. But we could see the traffic going in to Sukhumvit and Phetchaburi was at a full stop.

I got out of the taxi after having paid the driver 140 Baht + 20 Baht tip. I could hear the music Aerobics in Suan Luang Rama IXas soon as I got out of the taxi and I could see a group of people doing aerobics.

And of course, when HE Man is coming around the corner they wants him to join the Aerobics in Suan Luang Rama IXaerobics. And they blasted out the offer through the giant loudspeakers in the park. And when I walked by the aerobics leader turned around on the top of the platform and the offers to join
Aerobics in Suan Luang Rama IXcontinued while I was walking (a wee bit faster) to put some distance between me and the aerobics group.

But I could hear them from quite a distance. There were plenty people exercising in the park and I had not any high hopes to see much of a bird life in Suan Luang Rama IX as there was a terrible noise everywhere.

It got better the longer I worked my way in to the park. I come to the area described on Nick Upton's web pag www.thaibirding.com And I qoute: “The rather overgrown pond here is home to a small colony of about half a dozen Black-crowned Night Herons which can be seen roosting in the trees overhanging the water during the day.”

I came to the Night Heron Pond and there was a walk board going around the pond and I could even cross the pond on the wooden board walk. There was a hut with benches so I could sit down.

But there was not any birds to see in or around the pond. I crossed the pond and I started to walk south on the east side of the park. I wanted to reach the South West corner of the park.

I passed my first bird for today, well, the first bird I managed to get a picture of. It was a Yellow-vented bulbul eating from a flower. And I was lucky, I managed to come up pretty close Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stbefore the bird got scared and flew off. It was a beautiful flower and I was happy about the pictures of the Yellow-vented Bulbul eating on the flower.

I havenot seen any Kingfishers and I wold really like to see any of the beautiful Kingfishers. So I continued towards the South East corner of the park. I was really hoping to get a glimpse of the beautiful Night Heron and a Kingfisher.

I quote Nick Upton's web page again: “The south eastern boundary is bordered by an overgrown drainage pond where Kingfishers usually hunt and Pond Herons lurk, pretty much anything could turn up in it during migration.” I came to the South Eastern corner and there was a huge pond.

I also saw two Asian Openbills sitting on the fence dividing the park from the drainage pond. I Night Heron Pond in Suan Luang Rama IXcould see some Asian Openbills and a few Herons there, but no opening so I could get in there.

Well, not that I would have gone in there anyway. Looks to be a snake infested area so it is a clear NO GO area for me.

I sneaked up on the Asian Openbills looking through my camera as I was hoping to get a few pictures of the birds taking off. But this stork was not afraid and I could walk all the way up to the bird. I was under the fence, about 1 meter from the bird at take-off. So that picture turned out to be a failure.

Otherwise they are always scared and fly away, but this time when I in eye level the bird refused to fly away. Anyway, there was a terrible noise from loudspeakers spread around in the park. Something that sounded like old Chinese music and a long list in Thai of things you were not allowed to do in the park

And no benches in the park. I usually try to sit down and after a few minutes there are birds coming and you can get some nice pictures. But here was no Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stbench in sight, well, there were some outside what I think was a toilet. Not a place you want to sit at waiting for birds.

Anyway, 2 hours will be enough for me and I started to walk back the same way I had come here. Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stAnd I hope that I can find a taxi to get me back home.

It was hot, very hot and I stopped to buy a bottle ow water on my way back to the gate. I ran in to a Malaysian Pied Fantail back at the gate. And they are usually jumping around so it is next to impossible to get any pictures. But I was very lucky with this one.

Back home and I had a fruit salad before going to see my friend at Landmark Hotel. We were going for some tea and I told him to take on a pair of sturdy shoes so we could go for some Landmark Hotel, Bangkokbirding after the tea.

I came to Landmark Hotel 5 minutes past 2 and my friend add already got a pot of tea.

But my friend thought the weather wasn't good enough when we were leaving.

So we decided to skip the birding. We went to Foodland to buy food and I will make meatballs tonight. My friends will come at 6 o'clock so I will have a few hours to prepare. I took a taxi back home, a little disappointed about the missed birding. But excited to make meatballs and it will be fun to have dinner tonight, and no alcohol. Water only as I have plans to go for an early morning birding tomorrow morning.

and I got out of bed at 5 o'clock in the morning and a few minutes after 6 I was in a taxi on my way to Suan Rot Fai. Yesterday I got out of bed at 5 to turn off my alarm. I thought just a minute and I felt asleep and I didn't woke up until 1 o'clock in the afternoon. Must be some kind of record, sleeping form 10 in the evening to 1 o'clock in the afternoon.

I had been in Suan Rot Fai for 5 minutes when I discovered that the battery in my camera was flat. What the duck? I was almost sure that I had charged the battery. DARN and DOUBLE DARN! I had to take a taxi back home, and my next bird picture will be from Australia.

Line

Before I left I lined a picture to my friend just to make sure he knew that I had been in the park. Well, back home and I need to pack my bag before going to Suvarnabhumi and my Singapore Airlines flight to Cairns via Singapore. And as I had to cancel my birding I have time to destroy Fat assmy diet and I will see my friend for lunch before going to the airport.

The question here is, will I eat myself in to the first class section or back to the cattle class section of the plane. Eating my way in to the first class section isn't really any option as the first class section is removed from most of the planes today. Business is as wide as it gets. My dream is of course to be able to sit in the back. 2, 8 meter between the back pockets is more than enough and it is about 2, 5 meter too much for the cattle class seats.

All we need to do to find out if there is any birds on the Kangaroo and Koala adventure is to click HERE. And we will Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st hopefully have many Australian birds to see.
