Friday 25th of December 2015 and I had arranged everything, except 3 things that I could not find at Tops Market. I called my friend and I gave him a list of missing things.
• ต้นกะทือ Wild ginger
• ใบโหระพา Basil
• ใบมะกรูด Kaffir Lime leaf
I had a lot of help from www.thaifoodmaster.com and I had printed the recipies that I brought to Tops Market. I found most of the things. There were a lot of ready-made curry paste but I could not find many of the herbs required to make my own curry. So I had to buy the ready-made curry paste.
• Thai Green Chicken Curry (แกงเขียวหวานไก่ ; gaeng khiao waan gai) Skåne styled
• Fried Chicken with Cashew Nuts (ไก่ผัดเม็ดมะม่วง; gai phat met mamuang) Skåne styled
The green curry receipt was a video at www.thaifoodmaster.com so I had to watch the video a few times. A hot tip is to take away all the stuff you don't like and swap if for things you think will taste good. I also had good help from other sites, but the one I liked the most was Thai Food Masters. But of course, I used tips and hints from several web pages.
So why is our Hero eating Thai food? Well, it started a year ago in Laos, excellent food. And in Laos they are not so perverted with the chilli so I just felt in love with the Lao food. I even attended a Lao cooking school in Vientiane. I loved it and I use to pester my Thai friends by asking them how they have destroyed the Lao food.
- It is Thai food
- No, Thai people come from China and they had to walk through Laos to come here. And obviously they forgot to cook when they left Laos!
When I came back from Laos I took a cooking class at Bangkok Thai Cooking Academy. Turned out that the school was just a few minutes’ walk away from where I live. Anyway, if you're in Bangkok or Vientiane I can recommend these cooking classes.
My friend came for our boxing exercise and he brought ใบโหระพา Basil and ใบมะกรูด Kaffir Lime leaf. He didn't knew the first item, but when I showed him a picture he told me that I had giving him the wrong name. We finished the boxing and we went to Lawson 108 to buy San Miguel Light for the dinner.
Lawson 108 didn't had any San Miguel Light so we had to walk to Family Mart and back
Learn Thai
And by the way, MERRY CHRISTMAS! Impossible to forget that it is Christmas. Christmas Eve was spent in Thai school with hard studies. Today, Boxing Day and my telephone is full of videos. Yeah, Christmas videos and Merry Christmas greetings. Christmas, are we allowed to say Christmas? Happy holidays are maybe more political correct, at least in Europe.
Thanks to Line I can also share the below videos.
What a waste of time! Oh, sorry, you’re not allowed to say so
I prepared the food by chopping most of the ingredients and I put the stuff on different plates just as we do at the cooking school.
I was almost ready when my friends started to arrive and I got some help. I started the rice when my friends arrived and we got started with the friend chicken with cashew nuts.
We fried nuts, chicken and the peppers. We put everything on a plate and we would fry the onions and add everything when the curries are ready. We brought out two frying pans, one for the yellow curry and one for the green curry.
Starting by frying the curry paste while adding the coconut cream. I had cut and prepared the basil and lime leafs just before my friends arrived and it smelled Thai food in my kitchen. I realised that it was the leafs giving off the good smell.
Nice with help
We had 6 children visiting us
The Thai food is soon ready
The Thai food is soon ready
Thai food, it is quite easy to have a few different meals running on the stove. If you have chopped all the ingredients the only thing remaining to do is to fry the stuff. A curry needs to simmer for a few minutes, but it is quite quick to cook the food.
By the time the food was ready everyone had arrived. We were 20 people in my apartment, 6 children and the youngest children had a great time. When the 2 first children arrived, 3 and 5 they looked at each other for a few minutes and then they started to run around the table screaming of laughter. Oh, how I miss my childhood, always fun.
A box turned in to a racing car in a jiff. A pot was soon an airplane and so on.
When the other children arrived, the youngest 5 he was soon joining the other two and they ran around the table screaming of laughter. Jumping in my sofa having a good time. Well, I will have to clean the floor and furniture, fruit, food and candy all over the place. At least to say a sticky floor, almost so I'm getting stuck walking on the floor. But that is the price for a good time.
I just love to watch children having a good time. And one thing is for sure, they will not have any problem falling asleep when they are back home.
Well, as my friend said, he will be asleep before they are back home and we will have to carry him.
So it was worth the hullabaloo, laughter and a mess in the living room to have them running around screaming and laughing.
The steamed rice and the green curry was the first thing to be ready. a few minutes later and the fried chicken was ready followed by the noodle soup. Well, the noodle soup was more like a stew.
The food was ready and as we're 20 people eating there was not enough space in my kitchen. We have been 10 to 12 people at my kitchen table. 20 people would be impossible so the some people were eating in the living room.
Now it will be interesting to see how they like the Skåne/ Thai fusion food. I managed to stop them from adding all the curry as it would be like fire to eat the food.
Like the other day when I was out drinking beer with my friends. My friend ordered snacks, BBQ pork and some sausages. The sausage was something of the best I have ever had. Tasted of Thai herbs and leafs. Delicious for 20 seconds, then it was like fire in my mouth and I didn't tried the sausage again, impossible to eat. Thinking about it, I must have looked like the village idiot with my tongue hanging out from my mouth.
The food was ready and as soon as I called my friends and my kitchen were soon full of people. Will there be enough food? I liked it, but as my friends are all Thai except for an American with different taste buds. The American took more than one helping so he is used to good food. Or, well, it might have been hunger.
I heard a few Thai expressions
- ไม่เผ็ด - maipèt (not spicy)
We remember my friend that destroyed my spaghetti meat sauce with chilli powder at the birthday party in Nonthaburu asked if I had any chilli powder at home.
But almost all food were gone when we were ready so it was not too bad. Just a wee bit remaining for my breakfast tomorrow
The food is ready
Höganäs keramik
My frind was leaving for Hua Hin early tomorrow so he had to leave with his children. 2 children remaining and they were soon turning my sofa in to a bouncing castle. Where do they find the energy for this. But they had fun and that is what’s matter.
They were really busy making a mess in my living room and it looked to have been a real party in there.
The clock was approaching midnight and the children started to get tired after all the playing.
They wanted to help me to do the dishes, but this is my one rule. I do the cleaning myself. I don't come home to other people's home and start cleaning and to do the dishes. If they do the dishes in my kitchen I will feel uncomfortable sitting down relaxing when visiting their homes while they do the dishes.
Children having fun
Early night and we will never have to learn the word hangover in Thai
My friends left at midnight and I could do the dishes and I managed to finish most of it. I was full and it had been kind of healthy food. Thai food is healthy, right?
Only a few beers and there will be no hangover tomorrow. So we will never have to learn the word for hangover in Thai.
