Khao San Road
This road is an old road built during the reign of King Rama V, (1868-1910) from the old may surveyed in 1921, some wooden shop-houses were already built on both sides of the road. At present the road is well known among western tourists for guesthouses offering cheap accommodation. The area takes on the look of a small western community in the Rattanakosin area.
To get there: take Chao Phraya Tourist Boat to Phra Arthit Pier. Exit pier and walk short distance to Phra Arthit Road. Turn left and follow Phra Arthit Road past Phra Sumane Fort on your left and continue another 300 m. to intersection with Chakrabongse Road. Cross Chaakrabongse Road then turn right and proceed about 350 m. to Khao San Road that will intersect on your left.
Phra Sumane fort
Phra Sumane Fort is a hexagonal-shaped concrete structure, topped with a pointed roof. At the beginning of the Rattanakosin period (1782) they were 14 forts along the city limits. Today, only 2 fort remain Phra Sumane Fort was partly destroyed during King Rama V-VIII (1868-1934). The Fine Arts department repaired and restored it in 1959 and again in 1981.
To get there: Exit Chao Phraya Tourist Boat at Phra Athit Pier. Exit pier and walk short distance to Phra Arthit Road. Turn left and follow Phra Arthit Road to nearby Phra Sumane Fort on your left.
Banglumpoo
The original feature of this lively commercial place was simply a small marketplace serving a community around Wat Chana Songkram. All types of traders ranging from street vendors, hawkers, stalls, and retailers to department stores are selling all kinds of goods and foods here.
To get there: Follow directions to Khao San road and explore adjacent sois and shops.
