Skånsk Gästgiveri Tour - May 2014

The history of Inn tradition

The story begins in the Middle Ages when Skåne belonged to Denmark. Those travelling on behalf of the Crown should by law be entitled to free accommodation and free ride by the farmers. This was misused and resulted in descend upon home owners. To curb this, Magnus Ladulås in 1279 established that each village should hire a bailiff, whose task would be to provide the travelers with food and accommodation. In 1283 a law was passed establishing taverns in Helsingborg. New guesthouse charter was added during Gustav Vasa's reign. In 1560 he decided there should be taverns at the major country roads. The year after, a duty to keep carriage horses and stock of food, beverage and hay was establihed. John III stated defined tariffs for various supplies in 1584.

In 1636 the national chancellor Axel Oxenstierna decided there would be taverns every two miles along the public roads. 11 years later, in 1647, Röstånga Gästgivaregård is mentionned for the first time in the church records. Queen Kristina adopted a new statute in 1649 in which both coaching stops and inns were regulated. Often the bailiff also was the innkeeper. "For unsocial hours" and other sacrifices, he received a substantial tax reduction. An inn should be located every two miles, containing one floor for the nobility, one floor for "honest people" and one floor for "simple people". The horse stables should be large.

In 1690 there were 39 inns in Scania. The number steadily increased and in 1740 there were 50. On the wall there should be a sign telling the name of the inn, where to the stagecoach was aimed and how far it was there.

During the 18th century, most people went by foot, or possibly on horseback. For those with financial means also a "ride" was available, if you were to go from a certain place to another. This simply meant that you paid to ride in a horse-drawn carriage - in other words busses and trains of our days. No goods were allowed in the carriage, only people, with one exception: poultry, oysters and lobster.

When the horse was too tired to pull the wagon anymore, you could stop at special rest areas, inns, where they switched to rested horses that could carry the passengers on. Here you also could have a meal and stay overnight. Only the innkeeper had the right to serve beer, wine and liquor within an area of two miles from the inn. This, however, was not a rule followed very thoroughly. A three course dinner cost around 12 pence in the mid-1700s, including beer. If you only wanted a can of beer, it cost 3 pence.

Gradually, trains came to replace horse carriages and the number of travellers decreased. 1933 ended the era of an inn with stagecoach, and the inns more and more turned into the historical restaurants they are today.

Saturday 17th of May 2014 and I had my alarm to go off at 7 fifteen and a wakeup call from the reception at 7 o'clock. That gives me enough time to have a shower and breakfast and time to relax before leaving at 11 to go and pick up my car at Sixt car rental. Now I hope Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st that they have an Audi for me. Otherwise I want the Mercedes and not the BMW.

I spent some time at the internet yesterday looking for places to see in Skåne. I had planned to walk around Helsingborg for a few hours. I was bored after 30 minutes and I had 2 spring rolls at Golden Bamboo on Hästmöllegränd.
Golden Bamboo is nicer than Österns Pärla, but the spring rolls were better at Österns Pärla.

I ended up at Långvinkels Gatan and . They had changed name on the place in the corner of Nedre Långvinkels Gatan and Fågelsångs Gatan. Used to be called Cafe Olsson and we have been drinking many beers there back in the 80's. I stopped to buy some books for my boxing Teacher's son before returning to my hotel.

So no more need to see anything in Helsingborg I will pick up the car and I will start my tour around Skåne by shooting myself out off Skåne. I won't miss Laxbutiken when I'm in Sweden even though it is not in Skåne.

But I will turn around steering South as soon as I'm ready at Laxbutiken and I will stay in Skåne until it is time to leave for the fire fighting course in Kalmar.
Today we will visit:
• Laxbutiken
• Röstånga Gästgiveri

I had planned to take the bus to the Sixt car rental, but I decided to take a taxi. I have not been on a bus for, well, I don't know how many years. So taxi it was. I went down to get a taxi and I discovered a gorgeous morning when I stepped out from the hotel

Elite Hotel Marina Plaza
Gorgeous weather - Summer time

I walked to the taxi stand outside the train/ ferry terminal. Well, walking, it sounds like an adventure. The taxi stand is 30 meters from the hotel entrance. I had to wait for a few minutes Elite Hotel Marina Plazabefore the guy at the car rental shop arrived. And I was happy when he handed me an AUDI.

They only have 3 brands and he could not tell me which car I would get when I booked the car. But Audi is best out of Mercedes, BMW and Audi.

I started my culinary voyage through Skåne with a stop at my brother's house. The rascals came running when they saw me coming in my car. And kids are kids and they were soon screaming:
- DADDY'S CAR IS MUCH BETTER THAN YOUR CAR!!!

Helsingborg
My nephews came running when they saw me in the car

I spnt 30 minutes or so with my nephews before I took off towards Laxbutiken. I left Bjuv and I E6 on Hallandsåsengot on the wrong way and I ended up in Ängelholm, well, on the road going to Ängelholm. I managed to get up on the highway before reaching Ängelholm.

So I was soon on the highway, E6 and I passed Hallandsåsen and I had soon left Skåne behind me. It was a gorgeous day and I was hauling arse on E6, Euroway 6 and I was soon turning off the highway and I drove up to Laxbutiken

I was delirious with anticipation when I stepped in to Laxbutiken. I asked for the restaurant and they told me they only had self service. They had cancelled the service at the tables a few years On E6 passing the border to Skåneago. I was about to turn around and leave, but they had tea in pots. The girl gave me a pot of water and I had to take a tray and I took 2 salmon pasties and 2 salmon cheese cakes and the tray was full.

I had 2 main courses and I could not finish my salmon pastries. The food was very good as always but I won't come back. Laxbutiken, once a gastronomic beacon had turned in to a fast food restaurant and I was disappointed when I left.

I was soon back in Skåne and this time I turned off the highway before going up on Hallandsåsen. My plan was to have a look at Båstand and Torekov before going to Röstånga Gästgiveri for my dinner tonight. So I left E6 and I was soon at Båstad train station

E6 over Hallandsåsen
I leave E6 before going up on Hallandsåsen

They are still busy building the tunnel through Halandsåsen and they have been doing this for about 25 years by now. Several scandals and the whole project have turned in to nothing less than a E6 over Hallandsåsenmajor embarrassment. So they are still using the old and very beautiful train station and I decided to drive up to have a look.

There were only 1 track remaining, when I lived in Båstad there were 2 or 3 tracks. But I was told that there is train to Helsingborg twice per hour. When I lived here there was a train every 2 weeks. Well, a few more, but only a few per day.

But I got the impression that the train service in Skåne have become excellent since I left Skåne and I think it is much to do with the Öresunds bridge and the Öresund train. I was going to visit my brother in Bjuv and there were so many trains so no need to look at the time table.

So the train service was a pleasant surprise. Well, anyway, there was a second hand/ flee market at the train station and I had a look. Maybe some old Skåne curios to bring home to Bangkok. But Engelholms Glassthere was nothing I liked and I left.

But before leaving I took of my new shoes, still pain full to wear them, but it is getting better. I drove around Malen, Båstad and I didn't recognise anything. The whole town are changed and I won't bother coming back again.

I drove to Kattvik and from there I drove small roads looking at the landscape of Skåne. I stopped at Hovs Hallar and when I left I took off towards Torekov.

In Torekov I looked around for a place where they sold Engelholms Glass. I found a place and I was lucky to find a parking space. Engelholms Glass and I can cross yet another item on my list of things to “do in Skåne before going back home”
• Eat Swedish spring rolls
• Eat Skånsk liver pate
• Eat Swedish pickled cucumber
• Eat soft ice cream
• Eating Skånsk new potatoes (BONUS) and totally unexpected as I had not expected the new potatoes from Skåne to be ready until June
• Eat Engelholms Glass - The best ice cream in the world

Engelholms Glass

Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stThe ice cream was as good Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stas I had expected and I wanted a second ice cream. But I Engelholms Glasswas still full from my lunch at Laxbutiken. And I was going to have my dinner at Röstånga Gästgiveri in a few hours. So I skipped the Engelholms Glassice cream.

But I'm sure there will be another opportunity to eat a Engelholms Glass.

I called my brother and I told him that I would stop at is place on my way to Röstånga Gästgiveri. I left Torekov and I passed some beautiful landscape and I stopped at the Italienska Vägen between Båstad and Torekov. There is a parking space and Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stpick nick tables so I stopped to take a few pictures if Laholms Bukten.

I had really been lucky with the weather today and there were plenty people at the pick nick place. But I only stopped for a few seconds as it was 5 o'clock and I needed to be at Röstånga Gästgiveri before 9 o'clock when they are closing the kitchen.

My plan was to go have a look at Mölle on Kullaberg on Kullaberg as well. So I took off towards Kullaberg and I passed through Båstad on my way South. Most likely my last time in Båstad. And I can't say that I will miss Båstad, but I miss my youth when living in Båstad.

Another beautiful sight in Förslöv

I drove to Ängelholm via Förslöv and I stopped at a convenient store to buy a Diet MAX drink. They closed 5 o'clock and it was 10 minutes past. There was a girl arriving with her car.
- Is it closed?
- Yes
- Darn!

There was a girl waiting for the bus and I asked if they had another convenient store in the village. There was one more and I drove towards the shop. But I stopped at a gas stop and I filled up the Ramlösacar and I bought a few bottles of Diet MAX and two bottles of Ramlösa, the best soda water in the world.

I left Förslöv driving towards Ängelholm and I drove through Skälderviken and then up on the highway. I left the highway and I drove towards Höganäs and I changed course towards Mölle when I came to Jonstorp.

There were so much changes in Mölle so I could hardly recognise the village any more.

Well, this was my last time in Mölle and I left for Röstånga Gästgiveri. I drove along the coast towards Helsingborg and Bjuv. A quick stop at my brother’s house before continuing to Röstånga

Mölle - Kullaberg - Skåne
Mölle on Kullaberg

I missed Bjuv and I ended up in Billesholm or whatever the place is called. So I had to turn Skånearound and when I reached my brothers house my youngest nephew came running. My brother’s wife had a birthday party so they had guests and food.

And of course cake, but I only had a glass of water as I had plans for a 3 course dinner at Röstånga Gästgiveri

I arrived to my brother at 7 o'clock and I left after 30 minutes, it will take me around Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st30 minutes to drive to Röstånga and as they close the kitchen as 9 o'clock I was in a hurry to get away.

I checked the way with the GPS in my SAMSUNG S5 and this phone has really come in handy. No Skåne need for maps or any GPS in the car. And the road to Röstånga was well marked all the way from Bjuv.

And it was a beautiful road going through the country side in Skåne and I made a few stops to take pictures. I was still full after my lunch at Laxbutiken. But I was happy when I parked the car outside Röstånga Gästgiveri. And it was a beautiful Gästgiveri and I started by taking some pictures.

No wind so the flag of Skåne was just hanging from the flag pole. Darn! Just a wee bit of wind and I could have got a beautiful picture of the flag and the Gästgiveri.

I stepped inside and I got a table and a menu. And I walked around taking pictures while waiting for my food. And Röstånga Gästgiveri is really a beautiful place.

The history of Röstånga Gästgivaregård

Röstånga Gästgivaregård was first mentioned in the church records in 1647 and is thus one of the oldest inns in Sweden. The mail stagecoach between Klippan and Höör passed through here in its time, and therefore it was natural to come here for the latest news from the rest of the world. In these days the inn was located by the old road to Billinge. The very first innkeeper was Niels Nielsen. He was succeeded by Pål Nilsson, who was Swedish friendly and therefore harassed by the Snapphane guerilla. To make up for this, he got immunity from tax when Skåne became Swedish in 1658.

In the mid-1700s, innkeeper Rydberg moved Röstånga Gästgivaregård to its present location and expanded with several new buildings. The expansion was so extensive that the villagers protested. The protests were so loud that the issue eventually got dragged to court. On October 14 1783 there finally was a settlement at the district council in Röstånga. Their verdict was for Rydberg to pay the village men "3 pints of liquor, one farthing of beer and one cartouche of tobacco" every year at Midsummer for the rest of his life. During the 1700's and 1800's, both woodsmen and plainsmen gathered around the inn to exchange goods - the future Röstånga market. This tradition was managed until 2012 with yearly markets.

The leading innkeeper of the 19th-century was John Jonasson. He built a spacious and beautiful farmyard, homesteads of oakwood and brickwalls, three fireplaces, a private well and planted 24 apple and pear trees. In return the standard of the rooms was very poor. A guestroom could have nothing but three beds and a wonky table.

The students from Lund enjoyed gathering here and therefore Röstånga Gästgivaregård popularly was known as " The Röstånga Academy". Here they met to study and drink punch - or by all means to drink punch and study, depending on whether the eternal student and writer Sam Ask joined in or not. The story tells about a group of happy students that 1904 came in an ordered a thumbtack with the waiter. With the thumbtack they attached a 100 kr bill on the wall. The students explained that this was all of their assets this evening: "Please serve us the best you can offer, but be sure to tell us in time before it runs out!".

1906 the whole inn was destroyed by a huge fire. Two years later it was decided that it should be built up again. The municipal architect in Landskrona at the time, Frans Ekelund, sketched a new one, and the result was the inn we've got today.

I got a table at Röstånga Gästgiveri and I ordered a 3 course meal with tea. And it started good, I got a big pot of tea. So they understand the importance of tea at Röstånga Gästgiveri. A good sign and I poured myself a cup in a jiff. They brought my salmon mousse toast and it was excellent.

I finished my salmon mousse toast and I enjoyed my tea reading Bangkok Post on my SAMSUNG S5 while waiting for the Skånsk äggakaka med knaper stekt fläsk och rårörda lingon. Suddenly they dumped a pan in front of me.
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st- What the Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st is this? Who is going to eat all that food?
- You

Jesus, I was still full from my visit to Laxbutiken. The food was at least to say excellent and I managed to eat it all. I was not going to leave anything behind as I did at Laxbutiken. I continued Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stwith Bangkok Post when I was ready with my main course from Skåne. Our Chef was suddenly standing next to me.
- Skånsk Apple pie?
- Yes
I got a plate with Skånsk apple pie and whipped cream and something I had never seen before. A bucket with vanilla sauce. Yes, they do it Skåne Staajl around here.

Skåne Staajl

And I was full when I was ready with the apple pie. I asked for the bill and I went outside to wait for my bill. It was a gorgeous evening and the air smelled very good here on the country side.

I was very happy with my visit when I left Röstånga Gästgiveri walking towards the town. And expensive day, 5000 Baht for food and 3000 Baht for gasoline, but it‘s still way cheaper than to go drink beer. And I will feel much better tomorrow morning when they call to wake me up at 7 o'clock in the morning. So tomorrow will be a long day driving around Skåne

I stopped at my brother’s house on the way back to my hotel in Helsingborg. His friends were still there and i spent an hour before driving back to my hotel in Helsingborg. I was back in my room just after 11 o'clock, 12 hours after I left this morning. A long exciting day and I was exhausted.

+++++++++++++++
Sunday 18th of May 2014
and I felt asleep again, I did not even bother to go out from bed to answer my wake up call. Luckily enough I woke up at 9 o'clock.

The weather was a disappointment. Gloomy and grey and on top of that it was raining. Well, I had been hoping for a sunny day on Österlen where I will Röstånga Gästgiverihave my dinner at Brösarps Gästgiveri. But first lunch at Kalle på Spången in Ljungbyhed. Kalle på Spången is very close to Röstånga Gästgiveri.

But I decided to take a different way today. But first a stop at my brother’s house in Bjuv. When I arrived they were on the way to a birthday party.

Or they were going to drop my oldest nephew at the party as it was a class mate Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.sthaving the party. So I was soon on my way again.

I turned in a different direction as i had decided to take E4 to Åstorp instead of taking Road #109 to Röstånga. I passed through Åstorp and Klippan and I had Söderåsen on my right hand side today. I drove on the other side of Söderåsen yesterday. Söderåsen is a national park but I didn't stop as I was in a hurry to get to Kalle på Spången.

I came to Ljungbyhed and I stopped at a soccer field to look for directions on my SAMSUNG S5. I really grow to like the GPS function in my phone. Straight until I reached road #108 and then turn Kalle på Spångento left and then straight ahead.

I know that they have got problem with wild boars the last 15 years or so. When I lived here we never heard of any wild boars. But now there are millions of them and they have put up traffic signs warning for wild boars.

This was the first time ever for me seeing this traffic sign. There are plenty warning signs for elks and deer’s.

Actually, when I drove home from Röstånga Gästgiveri yesterday evening I had a big deer running across the street in front of me. Well, anyway, I was soon on road #108 and it didn't take long before I passed a sign saying Kalle på Spången 1km

The first thing I noticed when I stepped in to Spångens Gästgivaregård was that they were playing old Edvard persson hits on the entertainment center. I got a table and a menu. I decided to go for the smörgåsboard with a big pot of tea. It is really nice to see that they take the tea serious in Skåne and so far I have got a huge pot of tea at every place I have been eating so far.

And they had a black bread, it was outstanding. For sure the best bread I have ever had. I asked the staff about the bread. And yes it was homemade, of course, secret recipe. But the bread was called Edvards Siraps kavring and I bought one bread to bring for my brother. I had to try the spettekaka before leaving. I think it is 40 years ago since I ate spettekaka. I never liked it, but when in Skåne... I never finished the spettekaka even though I only took the smallest piece I had ever see.

I left Spångens Gästgivaregård behind and I drew road #13 towards Höör and Hörby and Sjöbo. It was raining and cold so I never left the car, but I managed to get some beautiful pictures from inside car. Of course, the weather was a setback as I wanted to go out to have a look.

I passed through Tomelilla and I was driving towards Simrishamn when I passed Glimmingehus. I parked the car and it was a few hundred meters to walk to get to Glimmingehus. I opened the door and I was about to give up the idea. It was windy and cold. But i forced myself out of the car and I walked to the moat. I took a few pictures and I was about to run back to the car. But as I was here I walked across the bridge over the moat. I will most likely never come back here again.

I didn't take the tour of Glimmingehus, but I bought some gifts for my nephews. A skittle game with wooden knights and a alphabet puzzle for the youngest nephew. I walked back to the car and I turned on the heat. Darn, it was cold. Now it is Simrishamn - Kivik - Brösarp. Kitchen close at 6 o'clock at Brösarps Gästgifveri so I need to be there before that.

I drove through Simrishamn and Kivik. I left the main road a few times and I drove down to the sea side. It is really beautiful around here. And the houses, very beautiful, but to live here. Well, this is nothing for me.

I also passed the very famous Brösarps backar and it was a beautiful area. but I could not help but wondering “Wått's dö madderfakking diil?” I drove in to Brösarp and I found Brösarps Gästgifveri. I parked the car behind Brösarps Gästgifveri and I had to walk around to enter from the front.

Brösarps Gästgifveri was looking very nice and I took a seat at a table and I got a menu. I was soon having a pot of tea in front of me. I was full so I skipped the starter and I choose wild boar for first course and rhubarb pie as dessert.

I have never been eating wild boar before so I was a wee bit excited. The food was very good, the wild boar was the same as eating pork tenderloin. The rhubarb pie was nothing less than excellent and I felt quite good when I left the place.

I left Brösarp behind driving towards Kristianstad and from there I took road #21 back to Helsingborg. I stopped to fill up gas in the car in Bjuv before going to see my nephews. 100 dollars Bjuvor about 3000 Baht to fill up the car and it was not as bad as I had expected after driving almost 500 to 600 km.

And comparing with sitting in a bar it was very cheap. Of course 150 dollars for food on top of that, but even then it had been cheap in comparison. And best of all? I will feel great tomorrow. Well, not quite, I have a soar arse after spending the whole day in the car.

It was OK yesterday, gorgeous weather and it was nice to get out of the car for a walk around eating Engelholms Glass etc. But today the weather was at least to say bad and I only left the car once. And that was when I forced myself out of the car at Glimmingehus.

I went to leave the gifts for my nephews and as soon as my youngest nephew was ready with the ABC puzzle we went out in the garden to try the skittles game with the wooden knights.

I was back at my hotel around 9 thirty and it was nice to get to bed after a long day. I will not drive around Skåne tomorrow. All the eating had made me grow out of my trousers and I had been driving about 1000km the last 2 days.

And as it is Monday tomorrow the places are closed or close early. They are open during the summer, but that's another month until then. So I will go look for keyboard and wall papers tomorrow, the last few things on my shopping list. I will see if there is space for some Falukorv in my luggage when I leave Kalmar.

Well, the only thing you have to do to follow the fire fighting adventure in Kalmar is to click HERE
