Aladdin's adventure The Luang Say Mekong Cruises

Boxing Day December 2014 and they forgot to wake me au at 7 thirty. Well, I woke up already 10 minutes after 7 and I was out of bed just after 7 thirty. A hot shower and I was off to the restaurant for my breakfast.

I got tea and I made toast while waiting for my omelette with potato and onion. The brought the omelette without bacon but they were soon back with bacon and sausage. Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stWell, I was soon to discover that they had put potato crisps in the omelette, not exactly what I had expected.

I finished my breakfast and while up loading my web page and I was ready 5 minutes before departure and I left for the boat. I promised myself not to take so many pictures today. Now I have thousands of Aladdin's adventure The Luang Lodge in Pakbeng - VISA run to Laospictures I will never look at again.

Because a picture can never substitute for the real thing, not even close. Maybe a picture of a boat etc. But never for the river and the mountains.

Today I will enjoy the sights. There was a girl on Bangkok Photographers Facebook and she wanted suggestions for a camera for 200US Dollars. She was going to Africa for a safari over Christmas. A camera for 200 US Dollars, well, not much. I suggested that she should spend the money on a pair of binoculars instead and to enjoy the Aladdin's adventure The Luang Lodge in Pakbeng - VISA run to Laossights.

The problem with taking all the pictures is that when I look at my picture I have just seen the animals through the camera and not in real. So just relax and keep the images in your mind.

Well, not only do I have too many pictures. I have too much money as well. I changed 200 US Dollars back in Luang Prabang. I got so much Scooby Doo dollars so the zipper in my valet broke. And how to spend this money, so far I have spent a few Aladdin's adventure The Luang Lodge in Pakbeng - VISA run to LaosScooby Dollars on a Mango crumble with EXTRA whipped cream and on a few cans of Diet Drinks.

How to spend this money? A few years ago when I was partying I would have spent the money in one night. But now there is nothing to spend it on.

We left Luang Say in Pakbeng, or a 20 minutes’ walk North of Pakbeng around 8 thirty, next stop a village called Ban Baw but pronounced like Baan Boaw or something like that. But as with Houei Say, there is most likely many ways of spelling the name.

I had my blanket and the leg less jacket, but it wasn't so cold today, most likely because of the lack of wind. And the sun was shining. It was a beautiful trip and I really tried to think about how many pictures I took trying to keep it down.

Most of the passengers are reading during the trip, but suddenly there was full activity, we passed Lao elephantan elephant that was using for work with the logs.

The whole boat sprung in to life and the passengers came running with Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stcameras and mobile phones. Well, did I tell you that I have been in Africa for safari? Chobe River or the Okavango Delta, that what I call elephants.

Well, it was nice to see an animal except for the cattle and goats on the river banks. We passed the elephants in less than 2 minutes and then it was all back to normal. I took of my leg less jacket and the blanket because it was starting to get hot. And by then it was around 11 o'clock and we arrived to the Ban Baw village.

Bamboo

noun [MASS NOUN] a giant woody grass which grows chiefly in the tropics, where it is widely cultivated.

• Bambusa and other genera, family Gramineae.

♦ the hollow jointed stem of this plant, used as a cane or to make furniture and implements.

ORIGIN late 16th cent.: from Dutch bamboes, based on Malay mambu.

An evergreen woody-stemmed plant belonging to the grass family. The 200 or so species of bamboo, which are widely distributed, are grouped into several genera. They may vary in height from a few centimetres (a few inches) to 30 m (100 feet) or more.

The hard-skinned stems are very durable and have many uses, including building, furniture making, basketry, and as garden canes. The flowering of bamboos is very unusual. It usually occurs at indefinite and lengthy intervals of up to 120 years, and often results in the death of the plant.

Time to leave the Ban Baw village

The Ban Baw village was like a market and I suspect they are there just because of all the tourist boats stopping. We walked to the village and there were children selling souvenirs. Wrist band but one of them had a pouch to wear around the neck. I needed one of those because all my Lao Scooby Doo dollars had destroyed my valet. She wanted 25,000 and I handed her a 100,000 bill, bit she didn't had any change.

I found one in the village and I bought this one instead as it looked better, double price, but quality have to cost. We walked around, but it was most all the villagers sitting along the dust road selling fabrics to the tourists stopping with the tour boats.

We left the Ban Baw village around 12 thirty and it was lunch time. And yet again, excellent, no, foocking excellent food. Lao and Thai food are pretty much the same but the Thai food come with Thai foodthe pain.

There is a sting in the Lao food, but I don't mind spicy food. I eat my curry and the Thai people think it is too spicy. Well, it is a strong taste of curry. The chilli have no taste, just the pain. My first Lao food was on day 1 on the cruise.

They served food and when I saw the food I was reminded about a Thai food court and I thought:
- Va fan e d här för skit dom serverar?

I like the Thai chicken in green curry and coconut milk, but I never order it at any restaurants because they add so much chilli
- HEY! NITWIT! Ask them to make it with only a wee bit of chilli

Yeah, it is like buying a t-shirt. A wee bit of chilli for them is like a ton for me. You buy a t-shirt Graf Zeppelinwith X's all around the neck.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXL and it is the 2 ton Supermansize for a baby. If I buy a XL in USA there are room for 3 Aladdin in the darn T-shirt.

Well, maybe I should be happy, if the Thai food was as good as the Lao food I might have been looking like Graf foocking Zeppelin.

OK, a bigger Graf Zeppelin. But I have had way too much to eat and I'm afraid I can't go on any holiday, or to leave my condo. At home I only eat fruit and fish. As soon as I leave the condo I won't even look at fruit. Then it is whipped cream and all the extras.

So I might be better off staying home in the future if I want to obtain my V-shaped torso, a lifelong struggle. Talk about failed in life if I die looking like Porky the Human Balloon!

The sun was warming us and now it was very nice with the wind. It was a nice South bound cruise. Of course, nothing was happening but I didn't had a boring moment. I really enjoyed the views, but Lao elephantthe lack of wildlife was a bit scary.

Where ever you go there are some kind of wild life, hell, even in Bangkok you see Birds in Laossquirrels etc. But here, nothing. I have seen less than 10 birds during these days on Mekong River.

Our Guide came and asked me if I wanted to fill up an evaluation form. I had filled up one when we arrived to Houei Say. But he suggested that I should make one more and to add the remark about the lack of transportation at Luang Say Lodge. I mean, if I have a few hours to kill I prefer to go sight-seeing in Pakbeng, more fun than to sit at the lodge.

I filled up the evaluation and that when I found out that I was the only one leaving at the Kamu lodge, the remaining passengers would continue to Luang Prabang. Many of them in Laos for 3 days, 2 day on the boat and then 1 night in Luang Prabang before returning to Thailand and back home.

I have had a jolly good time, last day on Mekong tomorrow, well, last day on the North of Mekong. I will take off for a 3 day cruise on the South of Mekong on the 6th of January in Pakse. Then we Mekong Cruiseswill live on the boat. We meet one of those “LIVE ON” boats just before arrival to the Kamu lodge.

I asked what company that was. I had been looking on the internet but only found Shompoo and Mekong Cruises. Never mind, I'm 100% satisfied with Mekong Mekong CruisesCruises and their Luang Say cruise on the North of Mekong. Highly recommended! And I put together the trip to Laos in 2 days as I wanted to wait as long as possible, maybe they could get access to a jeep in India for the tiger safari.

Laos, half the price and I think it is as fun, I have had a great time. We approached the Kamu lodge landing place and I got off the boat. Waved farewell and the boat took off again and I went on for new adventures and excitements.

There was a guy waiting for me on the flood bank, he took my bag and we started to walk to the Kamu Lodge a few hundred meters away from the landing place.

I was meet by the staff and the French owner of the Kamu Lodge. They told me that we had some activities during the afternoon, the Kamu Lodge Experience. We will do different things:
• Plant rice
• See a buffalo at work
• Shoot with a crossbow
• Visit a Mong village. The Ban Nyoi Hai village next to the lodge
• Fishing, or something with fish and Mekong River

Exciting, but first of all I was shown to my tent. We would meet in the restaurant at 14 thirty to kick off the excitements. The tent, nothing compared to Desert & Delta's tents in Botswana. But a fraction of the price. But they were well up to standard comparing to Wilderness Safari's 1000 US Dollars per night tent, and here I had a small fan. Comes in handy during day time, but not needed in the night time.

Here was no desk for the computer so I took the table from the terrace and I placed the table under the light between the beds and I had a perfect computer table. Si I have a desk for all my important work and I was pretty happy when I left my tent for the restaurant.

There was an old guy from USA in the restaurant and he recognised me from the Lao Airline flight from Bangkok to Luang Prabang. He and his wife had arrived this morning together with a couple from Switzerland and they were joining in the Kamu Lodge Experience.

The American couple worked as Teachers in Bangkok and they were spending the holiday in Laos. His wife and the couple from Switzerland arrived and we could start with the Kamu Lodge Experience.

And well, there was a whole lot of Hawaii LUAU PARTY warning over this activity called the Kamu Lodge Experience. But it is not like there is a whole lot of other things to do here in the middle of the rice paddies. So hang on! This will be fun!

We got started with planting the rice, there was an instructor to show us. I had never planted any rice but, well, I got the pictures after having seen numerous pictures of people bending over in a Aladdin's adventure at the Kamu Lodge - December 2014 - VISA run to Laosrice paddy. But the American girl and the guy from Switzerland took off their shoes and jumped in to the paddy.

The remaining 3 of us watched them plant rice until they grew tired of it.

Suddenly we found our self at the crossbow range and I don't know hat happened to the “buffalo in work” and the “harvest rice” stations? Harvest the rice is just another back bending/ breaking chore we have seen plenty pictures of. But it is nice to see it LIVE, but I don't need to get in to the water Aladdin's adventure at the Kamu Lodge - December 2014 - VISA run to Laosrisking to be attacked by a snack to get the full picture.

So we have a pretty good picture of how the rice growing works, but I would really like to see the buffalo. Well, I guess they forgot the buffalo in all the excitement. The cross bows were made out of all natural materials and the arrows was like the wooden sticks used for BBQ.

And it was amazing how these arrows penetrated the solid wood behind the fruit we shot at. About 2 to 3 cm in to the wood.

And they were pretty simple to aim with and all of us managed to hit the fruit and most of us managed to hit the white spot in the middle of the, was it half of a Papaya? There was a bridge crossing the creek between the crossbow shooting range and the village and now it was time to go see the village.
I can't say that I was excited to see the village, but I need to kill time as here is exactly nothing to do in the area and this will Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st hopefully be better than doing nothing. So hang on!

We walk back to the Kamu Lodge

We walked around the village and they prepared for a wedding party for tonight and we were invited. Well, all of us skipped the party. They were slaughtering a pig and the pig screamed so we could hear it all over the village. For sure nothing that made me want to come back for food at the party later on in the evening.

Otherwise it looked like a village in the area, garbage lying around on the ground. Obviously no one teach them to take care of the garbage. There was a sign with Australian Aid, Switzerland Development founds etc. The village also get money from the lodge and all this with what it seems no demand of having to do something in return. What about keep it clean before any aid?

There were 2 school building in the village, one from the government and one building that had been paid by the Kamu Lodge. No benches as they had been brought to the party area. I managed to Aladdin's adventure at the Kamu Lodge - December 2014 - VISA run to Laosdodge the horrid pig slaughter/ cooking scene when we walked back from the school buildings. Well, it was nice to put the village behind and now it was time for the fishing.

The American guy and I skipped this excitement and I returned to my tent and I was killing time with my web page until it was time for dinner at 7.

We were sitting at the same table and we had a very good evening. And that is even though the food was a disappointment, I had been delirious with anticipation going to the restaurant. Lao food, here I come!

They brought several dishes to the table, it was some smelly mushy stuff and I asked for bread. French owner and I expected fresh baguette. Well, it wasn't and I only had steamed rice with butter for dinner. They brought a pot of tea, it was cold. I asked for a second pot and they Aladdin's adventure at the Kamu Lodge - December 2014 - VISA run to Laosbrought what we call silver tea in Sweden.

I called the guy and I put my finger in the tea water. I told him it was cold and I suggested that they had to put a tea bag in the tea pot as Hot teait was only cold water in the pot.

OK, seems like they got the picture and I got a big pot of hot tea. We enjoyed our evening (NO ALCOHOL) and it was nice company at the table. I was happy even though the food had been a major disappointment. They only have international guests at the Kamu Lodge and they still only serve the mushy bad smelling stuff for dinner.

We returned to our tents and I had asked for a wake up calla t 7 o'clock and the boat is leaving at 8 thirty. My last day on the Northern part of Mekong in Laos.
