Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior defending our Mediterranean 2006

Thursday 6th of July 2006 and I had planned to do some passage planning during my night watch. But we had internet connection and I could as well update my web page. Well, the Swedish He-man alone on the bridge and the girls kept coming all night long. But they got disappointed when they discovered that there was a girl on the bridge already and they left. Our Webbie left at 02:30 after copying a little something from my web page. She had been on me all day long about writing a BLOG for her. This was a convenient way of be excused from writing the BLOG. Well, I will upload all this drivel and then we have to see when I can upload next time.

Smiley - Psst, is the world championship over? Smiley
Smiley - Hmm, I noticed that all the German flags and flow diagram and tables over the soccer team German flagwere gone from the Engine Control Room (Popularly known as the ECR) when I went for my hourly safety/ fire inspections.
Smiley - Maybe our German Engineers got fed up with soccer by now, this world championship has been on for way too long by now.

The ECR had been covered in German flags, diagrams, tables and shit since day one of the World Championship started. But today it was all gone.

just wanted to see if the Swedish Maritime Authorities had got my pictures I sent them. I got the confirmation and they have sent my new licenses.

There was also an e-mail from our Lebanese Webbie's brother and he had seen the pictures of us in the cabin. I have to buy a bulletproof vest before we arrives to Lebanon. I don't think changing my name will do the trick. Or as one guy once said:
- They will recognize you in a crowd of Robbermillions within a tenths of a second. Don't you ever become a bank robber.

Well, who needs to rob a bank, I only wished I could reach my money on the bank. When I was on the internet place I discovered that my bank account was down to below 0 with a note that I had money, but I could not use them. I had never seen something like this before.

I also expect 5000US but they told me that I had emigrated from Sweden during 2005 and that they could not send the money. Where do they come up with all this crap? Still waiting for 3 salaries to arrive even though I had expected them to be on my account long time ago.
Smiley - Thank God for American Express, MasterCard and VISA!
I still have the possibilities to have a good time.

Yeah fat chance. I always answer:
- NO WAY! Now I have so many “COOL” and “SUPER SWEDE” points with the girls. So why destroy it by taking off my shirt?

Pretty much everyone complains about my music, but I think it just because they don't have anything Smileyelse to say. We have been at the sea for quite a while and people tend to be bored. They are desperately trying to find something to talk about.

- HEY! What about complaining about Aladdin's music?
Smiley Well well, I'm sorry to say that it doesn't work with me. Luckily enough I don't have to choose music to be cool.

The other day when we were on deck with the Italian flags our Video man came on deck and asked me to come.
- I need to speak to you.
He took me to the bridge and asked about my music.
- It's very good. Can I copy the music?

On the way from Pýlos our German 2nd Engineer came to the bridge during the afternoon. She laid down in one of our two , well, I really don't want to call them sofas. It's more like a bench with a cushion for you behind and back.
- I just want to listen to your music, she said.

And she spends most of her lunch breaks in the sofa listening to my music. After my watch they talked about leaving the anchorage tomorrow morning at 04:00 and that means that I can go ashore tonight. I don't need to go ashore to upload my page now when we have internet onboard. But next time I upload you can read all about the excitements going down in the nice city of Zákynthos. If I manage to get ashore, that is.

Coming ashore in Zákynthos - Immigration/ Bar

The plan was to leave for shore at 8 o'clock with our AVON. We were a little delayed because they did an interview in deck with one of our photographer and the Greek/ Swedish girl.
Smiley We had to be very quiet on deck while they did the interview.

But we could leave some 10 - 15 minutes after 8 o'clock and it took us about 3 minutes to the Immigration office. The Immigration office was conveniently located on the 2nd floor on the first pub. I went to buy me an ice-cream while waiting for the immigration.

When I came back with my ice-cream to the waiting crew at the AVON they told me that it was not necessary to wait for the immigration. I left for something that looked like a mix between a kiosk Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior in Zákynthos - Defending our Mediterranean 2006and a convenient store 50 meters away. Our Video man had asked me to buy toothpaste for him.

They spoke foock all English in the convenient store so I took a tooth brush and I said:
- Colgate
- There is a store around the corner!
Well, obviously he spoke English. When I left I saw that he had PRINCE, the Danish/ Swedish cigarette brand. But I have give up and I didn't buy any cigarettes.

I made the first stop at a kiosk and he pointed across the street when I said “Colgate”. I asked if Zákynthoshe had PRINCE and I bought three packages of him, and a lighter. I have been around the ship asking everybody for light and to have your own lighter seems like the right thing.

Well, I got my PRINCE and obviously it was many years since I smoked PRINCE. The package was designed beyond recognition and as I found out later it spoiled the whole smoking experience.

I asked for the price and I got a calculator up my nose. This seems to be the way to tell the price Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior in Zákynthos - Defending our Mediterranean 2006and the greater part of the world. The whole thing ended up at 9,6 Scooby Doo dollars and I left for the convenient shop. I asked for the toothpaste and a can of Diet Drink.

Now I had the tooth paste and I started to walk along the beach side and I Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior in Zákynthos - Defending our Mediterranean 2006stopped at a souvenir shop. I was looking for the American flag, a nice gift always comes in handy. They didn't have any American flag and I left.

I met our 2nd Engineer outside the souvenir shop. It was annoying with the tooth paste in my pocket and I asked her if she could take the toothpaste in Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.sther bag.
- No problem!

Well, I continued my walk along the Zákynthos beach front. It was a beautiful town and I could see that there were many tourists walking around at the beach front. I passed something that reminded me of a ship chandler and he had the American flag, only the small size, but it's better than nothing. I bought three of them and I asked him to wrap them up in some nice gift wrapping.

I had three packages when I left the shop and now I only wished that I was running in to our 2nd Engineer again. It's a small town so the chance is great that I will meet her again. While waiting to meet her we can take a few seconds of our time to see the views of Zákynthos from the comfort of our favourite chair at home, so enjoy. Internet is great!

Walking Street?

I was strolling around the town and I meet people from the crew every now and then. But I was beaming of joy when I was running in to our 2nd Engineer. She took my 3 packages in her big bag.

I was grateful that our 2nd Engineer took the load off my back and I could concentrate on my next Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior in Zákynthos - Defending our Mediterranean 2006task, to get nico patches. I was walking up the walking street when I saw the green cross like a beacon in the Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior in Zákynthos - Defending our Mediterranean 2006horizon.

I got my package of nico patches and a few lip balms and they charged me 22 Scooby Doo dollars for the whole lot. But this time we managed to settle our transaction without the calculator.

I was out of there in a jiff and first thing I did was to run in to our two Lebanese Princesses. They were out window shopping and after walking 5 minutes I ran in to our Photographer from New Zealand and our Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior in Zákynthos - Defending our Mediterranean 2006Italian Video man.

We were walking back the same way I had come from, but we never reached the square at the end of the walking street. At 21:35 we turned around and we started to walk back to the pick-up place. I had found my nico patches so I was quite satisfied and ready to return to Rainbow Warrior.

We were going to be picked up at 22:00 with the AVON by our Canadian outboard Mechanic. Well, as you guessed the pick-up place were on the exact spot where he had dropped us, next to the Immigration office. So we started to walk back towards the pickup place.

- Puh hvor er jeg træt! Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st
I really don't have the energy to write, I have been so tired the last few days. I have also been Holidaybored to death, or as I said to our Photographer and our Webbie. This is my holiday and nothing is happening, when we were looking for drift nets it was ACTION and nonstop fun.

But now it's a waste of time going around diving. It's like a cruise and a holiday. I prefer to be home with my friends on my holiday and I'm homesick, I mean really homesick.

This is like a holiday and you cannot have fun because you are stuck on the ship and you have your duties to think of all the time. I called my friend in Sweden and I told him that I will be home around the 10th of August, just in time for the big party in Gothenburg.
- Can't you give your notice? He asked.
- I have a one month term of notice so it would not make any difference, I said.

Hmm, the party in Gothenburg, a closed city for cars and party on the streets for one week. I remember last time I signed off a ship during this party. It was several years ago, but they really never give me a chance to forget it.

The action pictures of the motion sick hero below is taken by good 'ol Ballong and I will remember good 'ol Ballong forever with gratitude for always having his camera stand-by. And by the way, I still haven't had the guts to check out our Webbie's video from Genoa.

Well, I arrived to my friend's apartment and we had a drink while listening to my latest MP3 collection and all of us were beside oneself with joy. We drank some strange vodka, they were out of the HIGH quality Swedish Absolut and we had to buy Norwegian low quality vodka. I think they called it Fjord Vodka. It was strange though, even though I mixed my vodka with orange juice it still looked like water, and after a few of those it tasted like water as well.

To stay in Gothenburg was nothing for us so we decided to call a TAXI and go to Helsingborg in Skåne. There was a party in Helsingborg and we agreed that we needed to broaden our views a little. So the girl went home and got changed and when she came back she was dressed all in white, summer style.
- I have a friend that drives TAXI, maybe he can drive us for a special price, she said.
- Make sure he has a good entertainment center in the car, I said. (Imagine sitting 2 hours in a taxi without music, pure horror)

MONEY! We need money for this trip, TAXI doesn't come cheap in Sweden. Luckily enough my wallet was loaded with all the plastic money that we would ever need on the trip. And when you are on a long trip you are better off with heaps of money. Well, we asked the driver to go to the nearest ATM machine.

Money turned out to be a bigger problem than expected. Pin code, how many times have I lost my card to the ATM machine by now? Many times and our driver driving like a car thief didn't do Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stthings much better, my motion sickness got worse by the meter we moved. Finally after 1 or 2 lost cards we were loaded with cash and we could pay the driver.

The spirit was high when we hit the highway, 2 hours of good music and a little something to drink on the way. We had been on the highway for 8 minutes when the girl was On the way to Helsingborgasking my friend if he was vomiting Puke
- It smells of puke here, she continued.

Well, I must say that the driving left more than a little to wish for. I was motion sick and I was, well, I was wobbly and I don't know exactly what happened. But my guess is that the poor driving performance made me sleepy (Or if I got an acute bad cold)and I felt asleep against Smiley the drivers Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stshoulder. Lo and behold, while sleeping I became nauseous and I was drooling lightly on our drivers shoulder. Well, it was like spraying puke out of my mouth.

Well, our driver stood on the brakes and I can just imagine what the families on holiday were On the way to Helsingborgthinking while passing a motion sick sailor on the highway. I can imagine the children crying, having nightmares for weeks to come.

Well, as you understand I kept a low profile the day after and I can imagine that our driver was happy. He got paid for a trip across Sweden and he could turn back after a few kilometres.

Our hero - Never any “alone” time

Well, after the action boat training they wanted us to drift, no one thought it was of any use to search for drift nets. Well, as no surprise we started the engine after 45 minutes of drifting. Now they decided to go diving at Ákra Athéras in N´sos Kefallinía. This was some 16 NM from where we were drifting.

While diving the sun started to shine and the wind decreased. When the divers were back we steered towards the open sea in search for drift nets. While sitting on deck we could see land disappears behind us.
- DARN! It would have been nice to visit a pub tonight.

The original plan was to drop the anchor over night. While sitting on deck we could see that they were changing course back towards Greece. The Greek fishermen they had meet the other day in Argostolíon had called our Greek Campaigner. They reported that there were no Italian drift nets out there. We dropped our anchor at 22:40 in Órmos Assou, close the village Assos.

Sunday 9th of July 2006
and the crew were on deck listening to music when I got on my watch at midnight. Well, I did not have to be alone during my watch, but I could not give my full attention to my web page either. Right now my web page needs all the attention I have to spare as it was a long Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior at Órmos Assou - Defending our Mediterranean 2006time ago it was updated.

When I came on my watch at 12:00, hmm, it was actually 12:15 Smileybecause no one woke me up. It was nice to sleep until I woke up by myself. Well, anyway the BBQ was in full swing when I came on the bridge. Half of the crew was ashore and the rest were waiting for the BBQ to be ready.

After the BBQ the whole crew disappeared to the beach and I was alone with the Greek Campaigner and our 2nd Engineer. Our loudspeakers were on deck and I had the music blasting high on the Richter scale while we were watching the boat. Anchor watch and 2nd Engineer was in charge of the engine room in case anything happened. Our Greek Campaigner kept us company but the rest of the crew were ashore. Or off the ship water skiing, kayaking and swimming.

We had dropped our anchor at Órmos Assou yesterday evening and it had been dark. In the daylight I could see that we were anchored in a small bay with an old fort on the cliff next to us. It was a nice day but it felt pretty useless lying at anchorage being a swim watch when I could have been home having a real good time with my friends. It's like a holiday onboard, but you are on duty and can't relax (getting drunk) Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st

Some of the crew members are environmentalist and they launched our canoes after the BBQ. Some of the crew started with the water-skiing.
- Isn't this what we want to stop? I asked.
- It is only we doing it
I pointed at the outboard engine
- Isn't that a 2 stroke engine?
- I don't know, maybe
- So that is like shooting a Flipper every time starting the engine. Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st

We had planned to leave at 6 o'clock and everybody was onboard for this and we could leave Órmos Assou behind but not cleaner. We will go about 8 miles North and then change to East passing North of Nísos Kefallinía and then South to the Patraikos Kólpos.

Hiba Aboulhosn, our Webbie dreams about what?

We will pass under the bridge between Ákra Ríon and Ákra Andírrion around 6 o'clock tomorrow morning. Then we will pick up a Journalist and a Photographer at Návpaktos, just a few miles East of the bridge. We expect to stay there for a few hours and then we will continue to Aíyion in Korinthiakós Kólpos. There will be a press conference before we continue our journey towards SE in Korinthiakós Kólpos and we will pass the Corinth Canal on Monday evening. At 9 o'clock most of the crew was in the mess room watching the soccer final between Italy & France. The spirit was high, well, not in the German corner of the mess room. They already won the holy piss pot, and that's next to nothing.

BananasI was sitting next to our Italian Campaigner with my camera stand-by waiting for him to go bananas. This is how they watch soccer in this part of the world, and I like it. When Italy did 2 to 1 he was rolling on the floor screaming of joy and when they said that it was offside. Well, yeah, you get the picture. Angry smiley Our Videographer and the British Journalist were soon to discover what I had discovered a long time ago.

The good pictures will be of our Campaigner and they positioned them self in front of us with their cameras ready as soon as our Campaigner turned bananas.

I soon left the mess room for more important and exiting stuff, always busy. When I returned our Italian Video man was watching the TV and every time there was an Italian player approaching the French goal he zoomed in on our Italian Campaigner.

Well, I stayed as a support for our Italian crew. Well, it's all history by now so you know that the match was settled with penalty shots and the excitement Tiredwas killing me.

Well, our Italian crew was happy, but our French volunteer didn't look that happy. But hey! It's only soccer. The game was over and it was almost time to go on my night watch.
