Birding/ Bird watching on Cyprus

Saturday 20th of March 2021 and I went down to the road and my Guide arrived a few minutes later. We will drive to Anarita Park to look for birds before going back to the hospital in Pahpos. I have booked a Covid test for 09:00.

I started my eBird app at 06:53 and we could Corn Bunting on the checklist right away. A little later we spotted a Black-eared Wheatear, a little too far away for any good pictures. Last time on Cyprus and I came close to the Isabelline Wheatears

But this time, impossible, but this morning we had one sitting just next to the road and the bird didn't care about us coming up to take pictures.

We continue and we drive to the Finsch's Wheatear area. The Finsch's Wheatear have left Cyprus but there was two Western Black-eared Wheatear. We also spotted a fox but the fox took off when we approached. We also spotted the very beautiful Male Northern Wheatear.

We had luck with the Cretzschmar's Bunting as we found them along the road, maybe around 20 birds or so and I managed to get a picture of this very beautiful bird. We also saw one Little Owl flying in to a hole in the cliff side.

We left Anarita Park and we decided to stop at Agia Varvara on the way to the hospital. There was more water in the ponds today so not much mudflats so not many birds. And to make it worse, all birds took off when we arrived. We gave it a few minutes and some of the birds returned to the pond. Too far away for any pictures.

We left and we drove back to Paphos and we reached the hospital 15 minutes before my appointment. And I expect to be out of there in a jiff and to get the result 2 hours after the test. So it is a good service, way better than anything you can get in Sweden.

My Guide waiting for me

Well, it took 30 minutes to get the test done and I will be back to pick up the result after the birding. My Guide waited for me outside the hotel and we left right on to my Guide's secret birding spot to look for the Eastern Bonelli's Warbler.

We park the car and we walk down to the area.

And we are soon seeing a couple of the Eastern Bonelli's Warblers so I was happy when we walked back to the car. But I was not happy with the pictures, well, I got to see the bird.

We decide to have our picnic lunch when we come down to Mandria. But first we look around a little and there is no interesting birds around. While we have our lunch we have 10 Grey Herons flying from West towards East.

We saw one formation with 3 Grey Herons flying in the same directions when we arrived to the beach. These birds was also flying from West to East.

I have seen many Grey Herons in my days but I have never seen them fly in formation before.

We finished our picnic and my Guide went to take a picture of a Hoopoe feeding not too far away from out table. We leave the picnic site and we continue towards the East.

We stop as we have a Common Kestrel just over our car and I open the door and I get a few pictures of the bird soaring 3 meters above me.

There is another quite famous Bird Watcher here on Cyprus that have been writing books about birding. He is the one that have trained my Guide and we met him almost every day when we are out birding.

He called from Agia Varvara as he had spotted a Hooded Wheatear and we decided to go look for the bird. When we left we spotted a male and female Black Redstart in a three and we stopped. We have now been birding for 2 weeks and we had seen a lot of Black redstarts.

They have all been flying away long before we had been coming close. But these two birds was just sitting there looking at us and didn't care about nothing.

We drive to Agia Varvara and we start to look for the Hooded Warbler as per our friend's instruction. We see a lot of the Cretzschmar's Bunting but no Hooded Wheatear and we give up after 45 minutes. My Guide want to continue to another area but I tell him to go look for a restaurant with Lamb Chops.

Yes, things have really gone south since they opened the restaurants again after having been closed for a long time because of the Wuhan Virus.

It was not easy to find any open restaurants as they were opening at 5 o'clock in the afternoon. Saturday and I had expected them to be open for lunch. So we ended up at an Italian Restaurant and no Lamb Chops. I walked back to my apartment and my Guide drove back home.

My Guide will pick me up at 6 thirty and we will be doing the last day of birding before my Guide will drop me at the airport. Click HERE to find out if we find any birds.
