Birding/ Bird watching on Cyprus

Friday 19th of March 2021 and I went down to the road and my Guide arrived a few minutes later. We started at the water front to look for the Ruddy Shelduck. There was no sign of the Ruddy Shelduck at the waterfront and we left Paphos driving towards Baths of Aphrodite.

We stopped at the Supermarket that we had been at on the first day to buy some supplies. The girls remembered us, Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st hopefully as the handsome boys.
We reached Baths of Aphroditea and there was a Botanic Garden and a bird hide

There was quite a few birds while we walked up the hill in the Botanical Garden. There was a sign saying “bird watching” and we reached a bird hide. The hide was placed very bad and I really could not understand the purpose. We continued towards the Baths of Aphroditea.

Baths of Aphroditea

The natural grotto of the Baths of Aphrodite, and its botanical garden, can be found past the fishing harbour of Latsi, and towards the tip of the Akamas Peninsula.

Shaded by an old fig tree, amidst lush greenery, legend tells that the Ancient Greek Goddess Aphrodite used to bathe in the waters. According to Greek mythology, Aphrodite met her lover Adonis at this beautiful spot when he stopped for a drink whilst hunting, and fell in love with her the moment when he drank the water.

From www.visitcyprus.com

We reached the walk path to the Baths of Aphroditea and we walked in shadows from the trees. Beautiful but shadows so it was not any good light for bird watching. We saw a lot of birds but no pictures. We saw eals in the bath and we also spotted a Rock Pigeon.

But the pigeon was flushed by I don't know what and suddenly there was 20 pigeons taking of from the bath. I was very surprised, where did all the pigeons come from?

We walk back towards the car and we stop here and there to ty to get the bird to come out by playing the songs and calls on my Bluetooth speaker. We have not much luck with the birds and pictures. Well, I got a picture from the top of the Botanical Garden. We had a fantastic view over the Mediterranean. Of course, it don't look as good on a photo

We decide to go to the Blue Lagoon and we leave the Botanical Garden.

The Bluelagoon also called Fontana Amaroza after some Italian poet living there a long time ago. Or simpy eBird hotspot: Akamas Peninsula NP--Fontana Amaroza (Εθνικό Πάρκο Χερσονήσου Ακάμα--Φοντάνα Αμορόζα) locaded in the National Park on Akamas Peninsula. The Eastern most point of Cyprus.

To reach the Blue Lagoon we have to drive on a very narrow dirt track with step mountain side on each side. On one side the road is 100 meters above the water. My Guide told me that many cars had disappeared over the edge. I was in the back suffering a terrible vertigo.

And on top of that the dirt road was in a terrible condition, as I said to my Guide: Cyprus Massage

We were down at the table and we were driving along a quite OK dust road. And now we were around 10 meter above the sea. The Blue lagoon and we were standing on the cliff edge around 10 meters above the water. Could not see any way to come down to the beach. But most people coming here are coming by boat.

We passed a Tawny pipit bathing and drinking in a puddle on the dirt track. There was also 2 Northern Wheatears. There were so much warblers coming in and out from the bushes and we decided to have our picnic lunch overlooking some of the bushes.

So the plan was to enjoy the picnic while watching the birds.

We saw a lot of birds but as I was busy eating there was no pictures taken. We spent quite sometime there before we left continuing to the end of the road 5 minutes' away.

There is a military area with a strange warning sign. DON'T TOUCH MILITARY DEVICES! Are we in a mine field?

We turned around and we gave the warbler bushes a second try before we left the area to drive back towards the Baths of Aphroditea. We pass one White Wagtail and further down the dirt track we think we see cattle but as we came closer we saw that it was goats. And they were huge, biggest goats I had ever seen.

Long horns and it might have been wild goats we see. A little further down the dirt track we see a Corn Bunting in a bush next to the road. I try to get pictures and a recording of the song.

We were almost back to the road along the cliff edge when we spotted a Raven. My Guide turned crazy, he have tried to spot a Raven since he came to Cyprus 15 years ago. Only 2 nesting pairs on Cyprus so they are, well, extinct on Cyprus. He threw himself out of the car as soon as we saw it again trying to get pictures of the flying bird.

We managed to pass the dangerous dirt track on the mountain side and we were soon back at the Baths of Aphroditea.

We had agreed not to go to any more restaurants and I sorw over the decision to open the restaurants on Cyprus. Why not wait until I had left? Anyway, we talked about “High Tea” or “Afternoon Tea” or what ever they call it.

So I checked the internet and only one place in Paphos mentioned on the web page with “High Tea” or “Afternoon Tea” listed in Paphos.

I wanted to call it a day to go back to Paphos for tea. But my Guide wanted to checkout one more place before we returned to Paphos for tea. We end up on the country side and we check out a farm and there must have been more than 100 Jackdaws.

And hundred Serins bathing and drinking in a puddle together with Meadow Pipits.

It was a beautiful area driving along fields and meadows. We spotted a Hoopoe and we stopped and we discovered two Woodlarks next to the car.

Woodlark or Wood Lark, Lullula arborea

We never saw any Little Owl, but we spotted one Buzzard soaring very high above us. We spotted a pair of Great Spotted Cuckoos. The Great Spotted Cuckoo put their eggs in the magpie nest.

So the cuckoos pester the magpie until they start chase the cuckoo. Then the female cuckoo put the egg in the magpie nest.

And we could see the magpies chasing the cuckoos and it was interesting to see them.

We drive back to Paphos to look for “Tea for two” and it was a nice place. We asked for their meringue lemon cake with tea. It tasted very good and I asked for a second piece. Two pots of tea and we enjoyed the afternoon on their outdoor terrace.

Not many vitamins and it was definitely not good for my diet, but it was worth it.
