Looking for the Aurora Borealsi in Abisko National Park

Friday 19th of February 2021 and I left STF Abisko Turiststation around 5 thirty and I drove slowly towards Kiruna and I looked for the Aurora Borealis. I need to find and opening in the clouds to see the Aurora, but it was heavy snow and overcast.

I spent more than 3 hours before I gave up and drove back to STF Abisko Turiststation 20 minutes before 9. In the reception they had just had a very short Aurora but very weak as it is overcast. But it might clear up tomorrow night.

Saurday 20th of February 2021
and I passed three reindeers on my way to the eBird hotspot: Kiruna--Institutet för rymdfysik (Swedish Institute of Space Physics) to look for the Siberian Tit. They were standing next to the road digging for food under the snow.

Along the road so I could not park to get them through an open window so I had to take the picture through the window so it was no good picture.

I reached the eBird hotspot: Kiruna--Institutet för rymdfysik and I used my car as a hide again. It was very cold to sit in the car with the window open. I spent an hour and I had to move a couple of time because of cars passing.

I went to fill up gas in the car and to buy 2 sandwiches for lunch that I enjoyed on the side of the road when I was driving back to Abisko. The snow was blowing over the road and it was thick with snow at some places. I was lucky with the Reindeer, I passed them again and I made a U-turn to get back to take some pictures.

I tried to get a power nap when I was back at STF Abisko Turiststation, but I failed and I was soon on my way back to Kiruna and Kiruna Guidetur as we are going to look for the Northern Light with sledge dogs. I parked at Kiruna Guidetur at 6 o'clock and I went inside to test their “SPECIAL” snow overall. They will come from Artic Husky to pick me up at 18 thirty.

We went to pick up 4 girls at their hotel and we took off towards the dogs and the sledges.

No place for my camera and tripod on the sledge and I was realising that this was not a tour to search for the Northern Light. It was a one hour trip on the sledge, following a track. And we turned around after 30 minutes. This is obviously a trip you want to make during the day light.

Back at Artic Husky they wanted us to sit around a camp fire in a Lapp cot and to drink something Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stthat I wanted to go back to my car. I am here to look for the Aurora Borealis, not to sit around a camp fire.

Don't get me wrong here, it was a very nice trip, BUT DO IT IN DAY LIGHT! I was back in my room just before midnight and it is yet another day without any Northern Light.

Sunday 21th of February 2021
and I stayed in my room all day drinking soda water and tea. It was gloom and grey for long as I could see. So go looking for birds would be a waste of time and gasoline. I went to the shop and they gave me a hot tip.

Check Abisko Skystation's live cam. Then you see if there is Northern light and you can go out.

So check out https://auroraskystation.se/en/live-cam/

Monday 22nd of February 2021
and my alarm goes off at 6 o'clock. I usually wake up at 4 but I was up until midnight looking for the Northern Light. I look at the live cam and the Aurora Borealis had started around 5 o'clock.

So I wake up to a gorgeous day and as it is my last night in Abisko I really pray to God that I have luck with the Northern Light tonight. And we have sunshine when I drive to Kiruna to go look for birds at the eBird hotspot: “Institutet för rymdfysik”

It is a very beautiful and dramatic landscape in the sunshine and I really enjoyed the trip to Kiruna. And I was excited as well, if we have this weather tonight and I might see the Northern Light. My last night tonight and I keep my fingers crossed.

I arrive to eBird hotspot: “Kiruna--Institutet för rymdfysik” about 10 minutes before 11 o'clock and there is a man feeding the birds. He called me and I went down and I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that the birds was not scared.

So I really enjoyed the bird watching and I also spotted the Siberian Jay and before I left I catch a glimpse of a male Bullfinch. So I was happy with the birding when I left.

I decided to drive to Nikkaluokta, the GATE WAY to Kebnekajse, the highest mountain in Sweden. It was a gorgeous drive to Nikkaluokta, great weather and a beautiful landscape. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere I spotted the flag of Skåne anging in a tree next to the road.

I did not see any birds in Nikkaluokta so I turned around. I had planned to go back to the eBird hotspot: “Kiruna--Institutet för rymdfysik” but first a stop to buy two sandwiches as I was getting hungry. So I turned around at Nikkaluokta, end of the road.

I drove for a while before I had to stop. I spotted one Raptor soaring over the trees next to the road. I took my camera and I could see that it was one Golden Eagle looking for food.

I stopped to fill gas and to buy sandwiches when I was back in Kiruna. I decided to drive back to Abisko instead of going back to the eBird hotspot: “Kiruna--Institutet för rymdfysik”

Blue sky over Kiruna and I was in a really good mood. Northern Light tonight and it was almost blue sky all the way back to Abisko.

Of course, there was plenty clouds on the sky but it looked good for the night.

I started to pack my bag as I will leave early tomorrow morning. And the alarm was set to go off at 4 and I would have time to go for the Northern Light if there is Northern Light on the life cam when I wake up at 4 o'clock.

I left my room at 7 and the plan was to drive to Kiruna and back, two times to look for the Northern Light. Bit I was back at 22 thirty after the first trip. I was tired and I went to be skipping the second trip. I was too tired and I decided to go to bed instead.

I drove 2000 km to come here, so of course I was disappointed with the Northern Light. Maybe tomorrow morning before I start driving South to Helsingborg. Anyway, click HERE to find out if I have any luck before going South tomorrow morning.
