Bird watching in Bergslagen

Tuesday 30th of April 2019 and I started the day with tea and oatmeal in my room before I left Best Western Fagersta Brukshotell. Coming out and I discovered that it was raining. I was driving road #66 to the Great Grey Owl and the rain stopped when I was approaching the Great Grey owl area. But it was still gloom and grey for long as I could see.

No signs of the owl and I left for the Sågdammen in Skultuna. Coming in the morning and the beavers are going to bed with the daylight. So I will see how long time I can spend with the beavers. I park at the bridge and there are some beaver action on the river.

I left Sågdammen and next stop will be at Treöresvägen and Sångarvägen to look for the Osprey and the loons. And I hope to see some exciting wildlife as well.

Treöresvägen

Leave road #233 when you reach the sign saying “Gammelbo” and you are on the gravel road called Treöresvägen. After about 100 meter there are a small space to stop your car on the right hand side. Drive for another 100 to 200 meters and there are another place to park your car while you go out and look for birds.

Look out over the lake, the Red-throated Loon is usually below the car if you have stopped on the last parking area so walk down to the lake slowly not to scare the birds.

I have also seen Common Cranes and the beautiful Common merganser in the pond.

I stopped at the first area along Treöresvägen. I could hear the Red-throated Loon taking off to find food and I knew that they would be back in 10 to 15 minutes. Otherwise there was nothing special at the first stop, just an Goldeneye that was too far away for any good pictures.

I drove to the next stop and I went down to the lake side and I could hear the loons calling and I knew that they were on the way back. I prepared my recorder and camera and I was standing there waiting for them and they were soon coming in for landing.

Not the first time in the lake, looks to be a pair going to nest in the lake. Someone told me that the Red-throated loon is not eating from the lake they are nesting in.

Last time they took off doing two loops around the lake and disappearing. 10 minutes later I could hear them again.

They were coming back and the same thing. Making noise approaching the lake, then quiet and starting the sound again when they come in for landing.

First time I chanced on getting pictures and today I had both my camera and recorder ready. I will record the bird as long as it is making noise and then I will change to my camera.

End of the recording and we hear the birds land, almost at the same time

I was happy when I left for Sångarvägen. The recording and pictures, well, I was happy with them. Arriving to Sångarvägen and the Osprey was sitting in the nest when I arrived but the bird took off as soon as I went out of the car. Nothing else exciting to be seen at Sångarvägen. I drove back to Best Western Fagersta Brukshotell looking for wildlife and birds on the way.

Back at the hotel and I discovered that they had a buffet lunch with all the traditional Swedish food, and I was hungry as I had skipped breakfast this morning. The food was really good and when I was finished I went for a power nap in my room

No Great Grey owl in the evening, not even any people looking for the owl and I drove to Sågdammen to look for beavers. Almost a guarantee to see beavers at Sågdammen.

I packed my bag when I came back to my hotel, I will leave tomorrow. Drive to Tiveden and Hamgården. But, of course, first to look for the owl and the beavers. Click HERE to find out if I have any luck
