On the road through Sweden

Sunday 8th of July 2018 and I decided to go bird watching before the breakfast. They start breakfast at 7 and I will dash over to the park one or two blocks away. I will try my luck with the Magpies I had seen a few there yesterday when I drove back to the hotel.

I was not lucky with the birds, but I was lucky with the breakfast, it was very good. The restaurant, one of the best decorated places I been to, so I really can’t understand why they have dinner in the garden.

I went to get my car at the parking house, the ticket I bought at the hotel had not been working and today when I should leave the machine could not read my credit card. None of my credit cards Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stwas working so I had to call the “hot line”

The guy “buzzed” me out and the parking had been for free. And they had returned my 60 Swedish Scooby Doo dollars I had paid for the ticket at the hotel.

So now I have 60 wooden dollars in cash that I will never find any use for, well, there might be a Soft ice creamplace selling soft ice cream. And I cannot say that I have seen any place selling the soft ice cream since I arrived to Sweden.

Actually, I heard a couple asking for a place with soft ice cream when I was in Helsingborg. I just passed them, but I heard that the guy the asked did not have a clue, and I could not help them.

Anyway, I drove back to the hotel and I picked up my luggage and I took my seat in the car. Popped a MAX open and I took off towards Inlandsvägen and Hotell Laponia in Arvidsjaur some 5 to 600 km away. I expect to arrive late afternoon as I want to do some birding stops on the way.

The family from Belgium that had been on the moose safari had been driving from Belgium. I asked them how many police cars they had been seeing on the Swedish roads.
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st - Hmm, no one

I have not seen any either but leaving Östersund early Sunday morning and they had an alco control and they stopped me, well, there was no traffic except me.

I left the police behind and I was soon passing a Fox on the road side. I turned around and I drove back, but then the fox went in to the bushes. But I actually think the picture got very good of the fox hiding in the bushes.

Gorgeous weather and I was making good speed towards north. I passed a very beautiful landscape, but still no sign of any mountains.

I reach a gas stop in Strömsund, an OK Q8 and there was a sign that they were selling soft ice cream, the first since I came to Sweden. Of course, I stopped, I never say no to an soft ice OK Q8 in Strömsundcream, especially when they seems to be very hard to find.

I stepped inside and as was disappointed with my odyssey up north I asked where I could see bears and reindeers. I had not seen any mountains, bears, wolfs or reindeers.

And as I had expected plenty of them I was starting to get nervous. For sure, I don't want to go back home without having experienced some wild life. OK, I spotted a fox this morning.

Anyway, I told them that I was on my way to Arvidsjaur and I asked if there is bears and reindeers in the area.
- I have not seen any reindeers or bears
- Are you joking? You have to zig zag between the reindeers.

A guy and two girls worked in the mini mart/ shop at the gas stop and they really helped me. One of the girls had lost count on how many bears she had seen. The guy told me to follow the “Vildmarksvägen / Wilderness Road” straight West to the border to Norway, then north and back east to Inlandsvägen that I'm following now.
- It will add 400km to your route, he said
- Never mind, I will buy some of your ready-made sandwiches and drinks so I can eat on the way.

He went to get a map and he started to mark the route for me, but the map wasn't good enough so he got to get a bigger map. He marked the route and JEEZ! Was I lucky or what? Vildmarksvägen started here in Strömsund. Just before I had arrived to OK Q8 here in Strömsund and if I had not decided to stop here I would have missed it.

I bought ready-made sandwiches that I will enjoy picnic style and I turned back to get up on the “Vildmarksvägen / Wilderness Road” and I was full of expectations when I passed the first “Vildmarksvägen / Wilderness Road” sign.

Vildmarksvägen

(English: Wilderness road), sometimes called Stekenjokkvägen by people living in Stekenjokk, which crosses the Vildmarksvägen, is a tourist road stretching from northern Jämtland to southern Lapland, Sweden. It begins in Strömsund and ends in Vilhelmina. Part of the road is closed during winter at times because of heavy snow, which can reach up to 7 metres.

In 2012 the Frostvikens Fjällpark was open in Gäddede as part of the Vildmarksvägen. Vildmarksvägen also hosts the Bjurälven nature reserve.

Route
The 360 kilometres route of Vildmarksvägen begins in Strömsund. It continues to the town of Gäddede and Road 342, then passes through Jormvattnet, Stora Blåsjön, and Stekenjokk, and on to Klimpfjäll.

From there it continues to Kultsjön and Saxnäs via Stalon and Lake Moalgomaj, on to Vilhelmina. Parts of the road through Kalfjället are closed at times during winter because of heavy snow, and the Stekkenjokk plateau is also closed from mid-October to the beginning of June.

Highlights
The Vildmarksvägen crosses a region that has the greatest concentration of bears in Sweden.

The area spanned by the road is very scenic and has many rivers and waterfalls. One of the waterfalls, Hällingsåfallet (which also is a nature reserve), drains into the longest water canyon of Northern Europe. With a drop of 43 metres, Hällingsåfallet has been called "Sweden's answer to Niagara Falls".

Hällingsåfallet's canyon is 800 metres long and, due to ongoing soil erosion, its length is still increasing.

Vildmarksvägen passes near Gaustafallet, another waterfall which also drains into a gorge. This waterfall was one of the locations for a film by Astrid Lindgren, titled Ronia the Robber's Daughter.[6] Although the area is similar in size to Västra Götaland County, which has a population of 1,590,000, the population in the wilderness area is only 22,000, resulting in a population density of less than 1 person per km2.

The waterfall of Brakkåfallet is located on the route of Vildmarksvägen between Jorm and Stora Blåsjön. Sweden's longest cave, the Korallgrottan is found between Stora Blåsjön and Ankarvattnet along Vildmarksvägen.

As Vildmarksvägen winds eastward it passes near the Sami village of Fatmomakke, a community built with a church at its centre. The community lives in 80 traditional goahti as well as 20 more modern homes which are constructed radially around the church. Twenty wooden huts are also found on the shore of Kultsjön lake.

There is also a visningskåta, model hut, built on an elevation near the church. Because of its altitude, mosquitoes and gnats do not exist in the region.

I had just left Strömsund behind having been driving on “Vildmarksvägen / Wilderness Road” for a fe hundred meters when BOOM! I spotted a bird on the road side. It was a female Willow Ptarmigan with at least one baby. As soon as I stopped she left the road side so the picture was not as good as I had been hoping for. I only got half the bird on picture.

But it had started very good and the spirit was high when I continued towards West and the Norwegian border on “Vildmarksvägen / Wilderness Road”

I also noted that there wasn’t much traffic, only a car from Norway, and they stopped to ask if I needed any help. They thought I had trouble with my car with the HAZARD lights flashing when I was driving back and forth trying to get in position for the bird.

I said thank you and they left. I was soon on my way towards the Norwegian border and it was a beautiful road, well, the road was not beautiful, but the landscape was gorgeous. But I was a little disappointed, no mountains. Well, after an hour or so I could see some mountains, but in the horizon. I could see some snow on top of the mountains.

Reindeers was a disappointment as well, not a reindeer for as long as I could see. I had expected OK Q8 in Strömsundthe road to be full of them after the “zigzag” remark back at the OK Q8

And no bears to be seen. I was told back at the OK Q8 that the chance to see bears would be quite good. Bears, like moose, beaver and other animals is moving along in the darker hours of the day.

But the chance to see young bears would be great as they stay away from the adult bears. Make sense to me as I have been on safaris before, and for example the tiger, they young ones stay away from the adult males.

And I was told that there would be some road kills along the road, Reindeers killed on the road and the bears would eat from the carcases. So yes, I was quite excited driving along the “Vildmarksvägen / Wilderness Road”. But one hour passed, two hour passed and no wildlife to be seen. But I kept my hope up! 13 thirty and I was getting hungry and I found a beautiful place next to a stream for my picnic lunch. I had a MAX and the sandwiches from the OK Q8 back in Strömsund. No birds in the area and I continue when I have finished my sandwiches.

I have left the forest behind and I'm in the mountains, or next to the mountains and it was a beautiful landscape passing outside the window. The area is famous nesting area for the Long-tailed Jaeger. And the area is a bird protection area so not allowed to go out and walk next to the road as there are nesting birds in the area.

I drove along the road and it was not possible to stop and get out due to the bird protection area. Of course, there was small parking places but as I could not walk out in the wilderness I never bothered to stop.

So I continued and I was of course looking for bird nest on the road side. It was a beautiful area awith snow covered mountains on my left side and I'm almost sure they are on the Norwegian side of the border after consulting the map.

I see a car and two ladies with big binoculars on a parking place and I take off the road to see what is going on. I was surprised to learn that the ladies was from Skåne. They had been driving up to the north to look for birds and now they were looking for the Long-tailed Jaeger.

We were a little bit unlucky, 3 more days and we would have been able to walk out in the area. They had big binocular and they had spotted one Long-tailed Jaeger. They let me have a look through the binocular. The bird was very far away so I never got any good picture.

“Vildmarksvägen / Wilderness Road” - Trappstegsforsen

I stop at something called Trappstegsforsen and I went to buy an ice cream. Ice cream was the reason for me to stop and I discover Trappstegsforsen. There was a few trees behind the parking and I spotted a few birds there, but as there were some young girls there I never went. Imagine me sneaking around with a huge camera around the children.

I tried to buy an ice cream but it was not possible to pay with card, and only one man working and a lot of people in line. So I skipped the ice cream.

I got in to the car and I left. When I came out on the road I spotted a reindeer crossing the road and I got very excited. And I was lucky to be alone on the road so I could run back and forth with the car. But the pictures was not so very good.

Back on Inlandsvägen and I turn towards Arvidsjaur

I'm back on Inlandsvägen and I turn to the north towards Arvidsjaur. I drive along the highway when I pass the second reindeer for today and I turn around to go back to get a picture. Another car is coming behind me and when I come back to where I had seen the fox the car had stopped there.
- Did you hit the fox? He asked
- No, I just came back to take a picture
- OK, I have my gun in the car and I thought we needed to put away the fox to take him out of the misery

I'm closing in on Arvidsjaur when I see a white reindeer in a pond behind some trees. I stop the car and I get out to take a picture. I spot two Cranes. I have never seen a Crane before and first I wonder if they have an Ouster farm here.

But it was no Oysters so it must be a crane and I realize that I have passed the Crane bird in India on my way to Alang.

The Cranes takes off as soon as I get out of the car and the reindeer leave as soon as I have crossed the road by foot. There is a clear-cut area behind the pond and I take the car to go there to look for the cranes. I drive through the clear-cut area and I'm not having any luck with the Cranes and I was disappointed.

I drive up and down a few times when suddenly the white reindeer comes out on the road walking pass me and the car and I try to take a picture out the window.

I left the cranes and reindeer behind, kind of excited to have seen my second reindeer. I was soon spotting another reindeer and before arrival to Arvidsjaur there was a whole group of them on the road, now we're talking zigzagging.

So the day had been good, beautiful views and reindeers. But it had been a long drive 700 to 800 km so there was no time to explore Arvidsjaur. I found my hotel, Hotell Laponia.

I checked in and I went to my room to have a look at my pictures and I was in bed. Day 4 on my holiday and until now, no time to rest. Up early morning and arrival to the hotel in the late evening. I really need some sleep, but there is just not enough time.
