Monday 30th of July 2018 and I left the hotel around 7 o’clock in the morning. Taking the bike to the Kiel Canal next to the Hotel ConventGarten. I had to cycle for a kilometre or so to Nübbel, the old pilot station where I should leave the Canal and get inland towards Bergenhusen where I hope to see storks and of course, some other birds.

I reach the old pilot station at Nübbel and this is where I should leave the Kiel Canal and cross the Eider River and continue north towards Hotel Klein Amsterdam in Friedrichstadt. So today there will not be much water along the route.
I stop to enjoy the views before leaving the Kiel Canal. Ships are meeting in a siding and I take some pictures. In Nübbel I find a group of Egyptian Gooses sitting along the Kiel Canal.
I get a few pictures of the Egyptian goose and I decide to leave. I cross the road and I discover that the bridge over Eider River and I had to bicycle back towards Rendsburg along the river. I reached a highway bridge and I could cross the Eider River on a small bicycle/ pedestrian bridge.
I spotted a few birds from the bridge. I also saw something swimming on the river, looked like an otter or something. I never got any pictures as I didn’t realised what it was until the animal was gone in to the vegetation along the river.
I walked down the bridge with my bike and I continued towards north with my sore behind. I was not sure where I was on the route as I was off the map due to the missing bridge.

My behind was really sore and I was looking for some kind of bicycle shop to see if I could find some kind of pillow for the saddle. But I was in the middle of nowhere and no sign of any villages or shops. I reached a village called Fockbek and now I was back on the original route.
I had to ask for some directions to get on the road towards Hohn. I will follow road # 202 from Fockbek to Hohn. I see a bicycle shop in Fockbek and I was full of hope. But the shop was closed and it looked to have been closed for a very long time.
I was really disappointed, my behind really needed an extra pillow. I found road # 202 and I started to bicycle towards Hohn but I passed a bench before leaving Fockbek and I sat down to enjoy a little MAX before I continued. My behind was sore and my plan is to bicycle to Hohn and the Hohner See to have my picnic lunch.
I had ordered a picnic lunch at the hotel and they gave me the picnic lunch pack before I left Hotel ConventGarten this morning.

Where is the lake
It was a long and tedious trip from Fockbek to Hohn cycling along the road. And my behind, well, I went off the bike every now and then to walk with the bike. I was almost in Hohn looking out the fields for deer when the couple from yesterday passed me yet again. They are obviously on the same trip as I am with Die Mecklenburger Radtour GmbH.
I have paid extra to get my hotels “upgraded” so that might be the reason for me not seeing them at the hotel. Never the mind, it was nice to find Hohn and I asked for directions to the Hohner See. I have to get through the village and there is a small bicycle track leading to the lake.
Yes, not only pan in the behind, I was also getting hungry and no sign of any lake, just a dust track reaching all the way to the horizon.

I had a lovely lunch and I was not very keen on getting back on the saddle. But I had to do it and I went back towards Hohn to find a place to call a taxi. I will take a taxi to Bergenhusen, the Stork Village. And then I will take a taxi from there to Hotel Klein Amsterdam in Friedrichstadt.
I found a service station and I bought water and they called me a taxi. I was outside drinking water waiting for the taxi. And when the taxi came we loaded my bicycle in the back and we were soon on the way. And my behind could take a rest from the saddle.

On the way to Bergenhusen, the Stork Village
We passed Grey Herons and I spotted two Cranes from the taxi. We drove through a beautiful landscape, yes, would have been lovely to do this on the bike. But the pain...
We reached Bergenhusen, the Stork Village and it didn't took long before we spotted our first Stork nest. There should be a stork museum, we drove around but we never found it. So the driver dropped me at the village restaurant. I parked my bike and I started to walk around the village looking for storks.
And there was quite a few nests around the village and I walked around taking pictures and I tried to make a recording with my ZOOM H5 Handy Recorder.

I went back to the restaurant and I ordered a bottle of water and a taxi that could take a bicycle. I was very happy with the day, especially that I managed to get the sound of the storks clapping. I had been running around with my ZOOM H5 trying to get the sound for almost 2 hours.
I talked with the people running the restaurant about storks while drinking my water and waiting for the taxi. I will stay 2 nights at Hotel Klein Amsterdam in Friedrichstadt so I will not even look at the bicycle tomorrow. My behind needs a day of rest.
We're ready to leave the Stork Village
On the way to Hotel Klein Amsterdam in Friedrichstadt
The driver asked where I came from and I told him that I was from Denmark. He told me that his mother was from Denmark and he started to talk Danish. He could hear that I wasn’t from Denmark. But he understood that I didn't wanted to go around saying that I was from Sweden, what an embarrassment that county have turned out to be.
We arrived to Hotel Klein Amsterdam in Friedrichstadt. Sweet Lord what a hotel, very nice room to look at. No AC, they had not even bought a fan after a 3 months of a record breaking heat wave. No kettle and only one pillow. And it is the first time I see that they have gone through the extra trouble to remove the pillow next to mine in the double bed as I was alone.

No elevator and I had to climb the ladders with all my luggage. Yes, it was ladders rather than stairs. And hot, it was darn hot in the room. I made a mental note to never come back here. Anyway, I went to the supermarket to buy blueberries. And I passed a swallow nest on the way so I will come back here tomorrow to take some pictures.
I will spend the whole day here tomorrow, will I find anything interesting, click HERE to find out.
