Birding/ Bird watching with RSBP, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in United Kingdom

Monday 13th of August 2018 and I was on the parking place when my new friend came to pick me up. We were soon on our way to RSPB Leighton Moss Nature Reserve. And I hope to be able to cross off a few birds from the RSPB Liverpool field checklist

We drove north on the highway and it was quite some distance. We left the highway driving through the country side and we spotted a Great Egret perching high up in a tree. The bird was very far away so no got picture. But I cannot remember ever having seen a Great Egret sitting like this in a tree before so that was kind of exciting.

We reached the RSPB Leighton Moss Nature Reserve and we parked the car. It looked to be a nice area, but a nature reserve? Well, for sure, didn´t looked like it. We crossed the road and we went in to the reception located in a huge house made of stone.

There were also a restaurant and a shop. We went out through the back, and now we´re talking. I could not see the area from the parking lot as there was a lot of hedges and trees. But now I could see that it was a huge wildlife area.

Leighton Moss boasts the largest reed bed in north-west England and is home to a wide range of spectacular wildlife including otters, bearded tits, marsh harriers, egrets and red deer.

See for yourself! Visit the hides, explore the trails and enjoy amazing views from the Sky Tower. Read more by clicking HERE

We came out in the back of the Reception and there was, well, a garden with different decoration/ styles on display to show people how they could decorate their gardens to make it bird friendly. Anyway, there were plenty European Robins in the back and I managed to get a few pictures, and recording of the Robin song.

These European Robins are really not scared and they didn´t care about me and my ZOOM H5 recorder, or my camera and I could get some nice pictures of the birds. There were also Coal Tits in the garden but they were very hard to get on picture. We spent half an hour or so in the “display” garden before we left for the trail around RSPB Leighton Moss Nature Reserve.

There were many birds at the RSPB Leighton Moss. The most beautiful was a Pheasant, so colourfull but the bird was hiding in the bushes and I gave up after a while, but I will try when we pass here again coming back. We passed yet another European Robin. Not scared at all.

Not even when I reached out with my hand. I decided to try to record the very weak sound and my new friend took some pictures when I interviewed the bird.

This Robin was not scared, almost like birding on New Zealand. The bird was not scared and I could keep the recorder 30 cm from the bird.

A very weak sound, and I guess it is some kind of subsong as the breeding season is over.

We continue down the walk path and I keep my eyes out for the Bearded Tit, one of the attractions at RSPB Leighton Moss. And a bird I really want to see. A gorgeous bird that I had been hoping to see in Sweden. A gorgeous morning was suddenly turned in to gloom and grey.

We were lucky, we were close to one of the hides at RSPB Leighton Moss when it started to rain. And I think we were lucky, thanks to the rain we got to spot a deer from the hide.

The rain is soon coming to an end and we leave the hide to walk towards another hide. We pass a juvenile European Robin and this bird was jumping around my feet so I really had to stretch to get a picture of the bird as it was too close.

What a day we have had with the Robins, just like on New Zealand, not scared and you come very close. We passed the reeds and we kept our eyes out for the Bearded Tits but we didn´t had any luck. Reaching the next hide and we discover a Hobby sitting in the tree outside the hide.

Hobby

A hobby is a fairly small, very swift falcon with long, narrow wings. There are four birds called "hobby", and some others which, although termed "falcon", are very similar.

All specialise in being superb aerialists. Although they take prey on the ground if the opportunity presents itself, most prey is caught on the wing; insects are often caught by hawking, and many different birds are caught in flight, where even the quick maneuvering swifts and swallows cannot escape a hobby.

We went in to the hide and it was a nice hide like all the other hides. We were very close to the wetland and we were soon discovering beautiful Black-tailed Godwits, a wee bit too far away. I have by now decided to buy a video camera and a Canon 400mm lens when I come back home. Will put me a little closer to the birds, and the video camera, well, maybe I can get a few good videos.

There was a Common Snipe just a few meters from the hide, but as it was walking in the grass I never got a clear picture and the bird won´t make it to my list of observed birds. Sad to say the same about the Black-tailed Godwit. First time I see the bird in breeding plumage, but to far away for my list of observed birds.

We leave the hide start walking back towards the car. We keep an eye out for the Bearded Tit but no luck. We spot a Marsh Tit and a Nuthatch. The picture of the Nuthatch is out of focus, so yet another bird not making it to my list of observed birds.

We spotted a Common Chaffinch and the bird had something growing on the feet. We thought it was some kind of fungus, but the bird didn´t look hampered by this so that was a good sign.

We also spotted a few Great Tits and I was happy that I managed to get a few pictures of the Great Tit and I can put the bird on my list of observed birds in United Kingdom.

Almost back at the garden at the RSPB Leighton Moss reception and I kept an eye out for the Common Pheasant. The Pheasant was gone from under the bushes an I was disappointed. But luck stroke and I discovered the Pheasant in the field behind the bushes.

20 meters further down the path and we ran in to a juvenile and the mother so I got pictures of the whole family before we left RSPB Leighton Moss. What a day we have had here at RSPB Leighton Moss!

We were getting hungry and we decided to stop at a Pub for lunch. We had a great lunch in a freshly decorated old pub and it seems like this is the thing around Liverpool. Redecorate old pubs where you wouldn´t dream of having anything to eat.

Back at Holiday Inn Ellesmere Port and I asked for a taxi to take me back and forth to the Supermarket. I need to buy things to have for dinner and breakfast. So far I have had breakfast every day and it is delicious food, but not good for my diet. An excellent restaurant at Holiday Inn Ellesmere Port but I have lost some weight during my European holiday and I would like to keep it that way.

I bought oatmeal and 600 tea bags of Earl Grey that I will bring back home. They have 4 different kinds of Earl Grey in Bangkok and I change every now and then and I like to have something different to change with.

Well, back at the room I discover that it is TWININGS, exactly the same as in Bangkok, but the boxes is yellow in Thailand. Well, never the mind, now I have tea to last me for a while.

Birding/ Bird watching in United Kingdom

I spent the evening in my room enjoying Earl Grey tea and oatmeal looking at today´s pictures. We will take off for Sefton Park tomorrow morning to start there to look for birds before we continue to Southport Pier, Ainsdale Beach. Click HERE to find out if we find any birds.
