Thursday 1st of October 1987 and I joined M/S Bleking in Åhus in Skåne. I was supposed to be on an early morning train from Båstad. But when I woke up the train was half way to where ever it was going already. I soiled myself when I discovered the time. I was just thinking that I had missed the ship, darn!
I had put my alarm clock on an early morning wakeup call and I don't know what happened with the clock. I threw myself on the phone and I called a taxi.
Wasting money, but it was much more comfortable in the taxi than on the train. The trip took 2 hours or something and when we arrived to Åhus I wasn't all that impressed by the ship when I first saw M/S Bleking in Åhus port.
It was a very small ship, there was 1 Captain, 1 Chief Officer, 1 AB (me), 1 OS and 1 deck boy. Well deck Boy slash Cook because the Deck boy did the cooking as well. I wasn't very happy to be on the ship, but it turned out to be OK. I had a good time and a little bit of fun as well.
I went to Landskrona to visit M/T Aurum when I had signed off M/S Nova. My brother was working there and I was down for a job interview. They needed an AB in November so instead of going home waiting and wasting money I signed on Bleking.
Well, here I was, and I could waste my money while working instead. For sure the salary won't cover the expenses when we're going ashore for a good time.
We discharged much rapeseed to the oil and margarine factory in Karlshamn. We spent some weekends there, but Karlshamn is not the most exciting towns in the world. Well, it's not even reaching the top 1000 000. So we spent the weekends watching video. And I have been in Karlshamn many times but never seen any beautiful girls. Except for the very first time with M/S Bleking in Karlshamn.
We went to rent a few videos and the girl in the video shop. DARN!
I lived in Båstad and she had been at training camp in Båstad. Swimming , she was swimming and she had spent time in Båstad training with her swimming team.
One weekend when we stayed in Karlshamn we rented a car and first we drove to Båstad and then to Landskrona for a few beers. Our Deck boy/ Cook drove while our OS and I kept our self busy drinking beer. We visited an old class mate that lived in Landskrona before we went to Dear John or whatever the pub was called in Landskrona. It was not very exciting, but we didn't come back to Karlshamn until early morning.
Before returning the car next day we took it for a ride around town with screaming and smoking tyres. When we handed over the keys the rental gay said that we should drive carefully.
- I could hear you coming here with screaming tyres and a roaring engine, he said.
- We were in a hurry.
Never buy a second hand rental car even if it's very cheap. I know how people are driving their rentals and there is a lot of wear and tear even if the mileage is low.
Karlshamn and of course, there was a pizzeria that we used to visit and that's pretty much everything Karlshamn had to offer.
We had a crane on deck that we used to open our hatches with. First thing to do every morning in port (except weekends) was to open the hatches so the stevedores could load and discharge the ship. If they could not finish the job the same day we had to close the hatches in the afternoon and we could go take a shower.
And if it was an exciting place we could go ashore to have a look at the sights.
If we went ashore to have a good time (drink beer) we had a few beers in the dayroom before leaving the ship for the shore entertainment. And it is better to arrive to a new place with a few beers in your blood system. Arriving full of confident and of course we were handsome #1.
Our Cook played the guitar so we had music in the day room and strangely enough, the more we drank the better the music became. It was OK, but it never turned so good so we performed any stage diving or something like that.
But it was enough to get us in to a good mood, well, I think the beer was more important than the guitar for the good mood.
In Norrköping we got thrown out from the Grand Hotel. It was the Hotel Manager herself coming to the night club to kick us out. Hmm, honestly, I think it was just me that got kicked out of the darn Grand Hotel. But I'm used to it and they were soon to be closed anyway. When Grand Hotel was closed there wasn't much going on in Norrköping, everyone gathered on the square and waited for something to happen.
Well, I call it waiting for nothing so we took a taxi back to the ship and our beds and I haven't been to Grand Hotel and the disco since and I have no wishes to come back either. There are more exciting places to be kicked out from.
I must have taken the few pictures I took onboard in the Södertälje Canal
I think we had loaded glass in DDR (East Germany) for Bohus. Anyway it was time for me to leave the ship when we arrived to Bohus. Bohus is just up Göta Älv after passing Gothenburg.
I'm not sure if we were going to load or discharge in Bohus, but it was something with glass.
Never mind, I was going home and I meet the OS later on in Landskrona when we were discharging with M/T Aurum. He came onboard to visit me. He told me that M/S Bleking had turned in to OK Corral when the Deck Boy/ Cook had left the ship. A girl joined the ship, a friend of the Chief Officer and they had been at a disco in Denmark.
I took this picture of the navigation school when on our way to Bohus
Our OS had danced with the girl, a very bad move. He woke up in his bed when the Chief Officer should kill him. Obviously he was very jealous. My friend got angry and he chased the Chief Officer with the fire axe and luckily enough he missed the Chief Officer, but he hit the gyro compass outside the mess room.
All for nothing, because they found the girl in bed with her girlfriend and this was a major setback for the Chief Officer.
Well, M/S Bleking was a little special. I think the AB that I relieved was sent home because he had kicked Captain's ass and chased him of the ship. Hmm, maybe it was the former Deck boy/ Cook that had kicked his ass seriously. Captain was a little special so he got is arse kicked every now and then so there was always a little happening onboard.
I signed off in Bohus Wednesday 4th of November 1987. I took a bus to Gothenburg and the train to Båstad. Wednesdays and Gustaf V was open in Båstad, only open Friday, Saturday and Wednesdays. Wednesday and I was almost alone, and as usually. When they closed we ended up at my place drinking vodka.
Rewriting about M/S Bleking while we're in dry dock at Odense Shipyard with M/T Ternvik. I found a few articles on the internet while searching for information
6th of October 2000, the company is going bankrupt
9th of October 2000 and pretty much no way to save the company
21st of June 2001 and M/S Bleking is sold and name changed to M/S Detterna
I also found that she had been aground in Falkenberg on the 23rd of January 1998. See attached PDF file, Swedish only. But I will try to give you a short translation: DRUNK!! OK, I will try to give you a wee bit longer translation: VERY DRUNK!!
Well, this guy went from failure to failure. We can read in the report that they ran aground on the 9th of January 1998 when they left Åhus in Skåne. Blood test shows that Captain had a 1,88 permillage of alcohol in the blood. But Captain doesn't give up. Approaching Falkenberg on the 23rd of January 1998, Chief Officer on the wheel.
Captain push Chief Officer from the wheel and takes over, his first action is to stop the engine and put rudder hard to port. I must admire the Chief Officer, even though he had been literally kicked from the wheel he informs the Captain that there is a big risk of running in to the breakwater or to run aground.
- SHUT THE F@CK UP!!
Yes, maybe we can understand why this guy got his arse kicked every now and then. Blood test shows that Captain had a 3,090 permillage of alcohol in the blood.
Captain was very drunk
The chart in use was printed 1982 and corrected up to 82:03
• Captain was very drunk
• Captain have MOST LIKELY been drunk on duty before
Yes, it goes on like this. And well, heaving up the anchor and they managed to break a power cable to the light house on the breakwater.
